The Descent - 2 different Blu-ray versions CONFIRMED (MPEG-2 vs AVC encoding) - Page 21

This is just an idea, have no idea if this is actually possible. Is there a way to copy the file that the PS3 saves when it bookmarks your stopping point in a movie? If so, a person with a saved bookmark could copy the file to a thumbdrive and share it with the others, who could then watch the AUS copy regardless of their firmware.

So great. Tonight I get Ghostbusters, pop it in and it tells me I have to upgrade to firmware 2.60. Annoying as I don't have a modem in the living room but I go and get it out of the office, hook everything up, proceed with the update and voila, GB plays. So since I had my PS3 hooked up to the internet, (launch 20gb with no wireless) which I almost never do, I decided to peruse the PS store and see what demos are new, downloads etc... Well, guess what? I can't access the PS store anymore without ANOTHER firmware update which would be the dreaded 2.76 which means I would lose "The Descent" watching capabilities. Great. Thanks Sony, you pr*cks...

edit: I see they have now skipped tp version 2.80 and still not fixed....

Dave, my PS3 is not connected to the internet either. The 2.60 upgrade is actually on the Ghostbusters disc, and will upgrade your PS3 without having to connect.

Oh. But still for me to use the PS store online to say, try a game demo, it won't let me. Says I have to upgrade again. Which would kill The Descent and some other titles usability....

Yes, and how long will it be before a disc comes out that needs 2.76, and you have to decide whether to disable The Descent or not be able to play the new disc? -sigh-

From a player that has such a reputation for solid playback this is just unacceptable. I'm surprised they haven't fixed this yet. I'm glad I have a Pany.

Has anybody actually tried playing the AUS version with firmware 2.8? Please confirm whether the problem still exists. Thanks in advance

Perhaps later today or tomorrow but i just checked the official site and it isn't out yet.

My friend downloaded the 2.8 fw and tried to play his copy of Match Point and it still doesn't work. So The Descent AUS will most likely not work either (Match Point is region free, but has some PAL extras just like The Descent)

I downloaded fw 2.80 last night and attempted to play my AUS copy of The Descent. Unfortunately, nothing has changed.

Amazon are selling this for $9.99.

I don't suppose there's any way of knowing if it's the MPEG or AVC version?

It's usually priced the same at Walmart and you'd probably be very safe banking on getting a MPEG2 copy.

I've just ordered this from Amazon so I'll have a look when it arrives. I'd assume it'll be the MPEG version. Still can't understand why there's been no UK version of the blu disc released, I suppose there's some wrangle over distribution rights being the reason. Anyway for £10 all in it will tide me over until its UK debut, or I cave in and get the Aussie version.

What's holding up the UK release? Is there one scheduled?

Is anyone with a Pany BD35/55 having issues with the new firmware and this title? I like to keep my fw up to date but after what happened to the PS3 owners I'm hesitant to move from the 1.8 to 2.0.

Okay, an update to this as my disc has just landed.

After fighting through all the packaging to get to the disc, then inserting it into my Oppo player, and hitting the info button during the Lionsgate logo at the beginning it read MPEG2 as the video source. I thought as much .

Then at the main menu, which is bit naff in my opinion but it'll do, I selected the main feature. Braced myself for what I was about to see when I hit the info button... and what do you know, it shows the movie as being AVC .

So either Amazon have sent me a copy that's been in their stock for quite a while, or Lionsgate have quietly re-released the AVC version.

I continued to play through the first 5 minutes or so and the picture did look very good. So overall I'm happy and well worth the $10 outlay for it.

I'm still very, very bitter about my AUS release no longer working on my PS3.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a region free player

I think why everyone is miffed is that this and some other titles are region free. And now they won't play at all because of the stupid firmware upgrade. It was probably intentional. I'm not buying a second player to watch a handful of titles...

If any of you bitter PS3 owners wish to never deal with this again, you have a couple options. #1 (IMO) PC setup. It will play basically anything you throw at it and in my setup easily outperforms any standalone I've owned, as far as PQ goes. #2 Region free player, however I don't know if those region changeable Momitzu (spelling?) and it's clones handle PAL, I'd assume they do also. #3 Get a US player than can handle PAL, stick with Region A BD, as long as your display can handle PAL. Pioneer will handle PAL no problem, and some remote hacking will even give you region free-ness for SD DVD. I believe Samsung also will work with PAL, but I have no idea if it will actually output a PAL image or just black screen until it passes.

It's a pretty sweet feeling knowing I have a Pioneer 51 and a kick ace PC setup. Reminds me of the good old HD DVD days when you could import movies without worries.

Well the PS3 has a rep for minimal issues when compared to others that need firmware updates every Tuesday for that weeks titles. I owned a Pany BD10A before my BD55 and I have never had a singe bd disc not play and I own several imports so I'm sticking with Pany. I could never do a PC set up the way my living room is laid out.

The solution for "my $30 movie will no longer play" shouldn't be for me to go spend $300 on a new Blu-ray player or even more on an HTPC that wouldn't give me any features I don't already have with my PS3.

EXACTLY! Especially when it USED to play just fine before. And they make you update the damned firmware. To watch Ghostbusters, had to upgrade. That was ok, because it would still play "The Descent". But now if I want to go online to access the playstation store to download a demo or even buy a game, I have to upgrade the firmware AGAIN! And that will prevent me from seeing the Descent and some othere titles again. That is lame. And really ridiculous. These are REGION FREE titles.

I think they may well promote the original movie and re-release in AVC in time for the new movie coming out soon.

I'm a little bit annoyed with Hollywood though at making a sequel with this storyline because it's only the American release which ended that way and the original ending that the rest of the world got didn't so it does annoy me when continuity goes out the window just to make a sequel.

I wouldn't have minded if they had gone in a different direction but they are basically sticking a finger up to the rest of the world by going with this plot for the new movie. Get some new idea's Hollywood.

Well your post implies that i am calling American's stupid. When of course i am not. The film could be great but it doesn't change the fact it is working on the premise of the American ending of the film which is not the proper ending.

I just popped my Australian copy of The Descent into my PS3, updated to the latest firmware, and it plays just fine...

I agree; the American ending is trash. But, the situation doesn't really bother me since we have the original ending, which consists of an outcome that is not suited for a sequel.

You are not affected since you have a european PS3 that ofcourse handles PAL material.
