Found a good reason not to use OSB (flooring) wood.

Used a BFD to flatten my response out to 150hz.
Dood... anything above 80hz makes my box sound like crap! I guess this is what they call harmonics noise?

That or I'm just using too much EQ to get it flat and it's running out of juice maybe.

Hahah.

The OSB was used because I had it on-hand and wanted to build a temporary box. This was NOT designed to be a permanent enclosure. Just so ya know.

It works great down low though.

Just not so much up high.
No big deal. I figured this box design wasn't what I would end up going with. That's why I cheaped out on the wood.
Problem is, I'm still completely undecided as to what to build next. And next time I can't cheap out with the OSB because it sucks so bad now that I'm EQ'ing my subwoofer response.

Sorry TheEAR.

You didn't exactly make the fav-five list. I know, you're heartbroken. Oh well.

OSB is ugly but it's stronger than MDF. If your box is resonating, you probably need more bracing.

"If your box is resonating, you probably need more bracing."

+1

Crossbracing between opposite panels is the easiest & most effective way.

Interesting. I do have bracing, but it's not perfect of course.
There is no bracing for the baffle. Though it is a double layer of OSB (not shown).

Seriously? Would it be better for subwoofer enclosures than would MDF? In other words, when doubling up layers of MDF would it be beneficial to use a layer of MDF and a layer of OSB instead of MDF?

OSB is stiffer than MDF, so the onset of panel resonance won't be until a higher freq.

But its damping is less, so the resonance will be stronger.

Your box looks good enough, with the possible exception of the baffle between the driver and small cutout.

Just run your hand around it while it's playing and you should find it easy enough.

That is a good idea, I didn't consider that it might be that easy.

OSB is definately stronger than MDF. Would you prefer to spend 30 years walking around an upstairs room flooring built of MDF or OSB.
I would definately choose OSB.
But it's a completely different type of wood build.

I tried it, thinking it would be terrible. Then I was impressed because it actually works okay. At least down low.

But now that I've got my sub EQ'd flat out to ~150hz (flatter than it was ), I'm hearing some terrible sounds. Before the EQ, my sub would fall on it's face about 50hz, then pick up and fall flat on it's face again about 80hz.
I can only assume the bad sounds I'm hearing are bad harmonics.

Or I'm expecting too much.
Or I've got too much EQ boost (overdriving).
Or something else that I haven't considered.

Either way, I've brought home 6sqft of MDF and plan to build a sealed box tonight.
