Onkyo receiver display is off. Broken?

Hi everyone,

I came home from work yesterday to find that my new bride, who just spent her first day alone at the house, watching a movie.

What was strange is that the display in front of my TX-SR805 Onkyo receiver was off. I asked if it was always off, but she didn't know because she never really paid attention to it and she's only been at the house for a week or so and I always took care of the entertainment center before.

I fiddled with the controls and read the manual. The only reference I could find was if the "Pure Audio" was on, the display would shut off. However, I turned the Pure Audio setting on and off a few times, so I don't think it's that.

I also reset the receiver to factory settings.

If I pushed the "Dimmer" button, I could see it cycling through the different dimmer settings only because the volume knob would light up, but the display would remain off.

I realize it's an amazing coincidence that my receiver's display would break the first time my wife uses it, so I'm thinking it might just be something she did to turn it off. I'll be durned if I can figure out what it is. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Otherwise, I think it's broken.

Thanks!

This is a known problem with xx5 series Onkyo AVRs. If I recall it is a single part (resistor?) that goes that causes the loss of the display. I just found a post from the 805 thread that discusses the part that fails and how to repair it. Below are links to the posts in the 805 thread. Even if you are not comfortable soldering maybe you could remove the board and have someone that is do the soldering.

The display does not shut off in the Direct mode, it does in the Pure mode though. The OP checked this and the dimmer function and it looks to be an issue with the display and not a setting with the 805.

I just fixed my TX-SR875 replacing the two resistor's on the board that is on the front left hand side (looking from rear of receiver) after taking the cover off. Fixed it right off! If everything else is working, it's the two resistors (see the post links for the fix). Hope everything goes well!

I have an onkyo ht-r500 and the front dislay just went out yesterday. I to don't know if a wrong button was pushed on the remote unit works fine other than that. Any thoughts?
Thanks

if your remote has a "display or dimmer" button, try that & should bring the display back:p
