Zerog6 settings seem to be a bit tan for my taste.
Anyone download 1004? I did yesterday and updated.

Didnt have an issue with IR that suppose to fix it with firmware.
firmware revisions within the same model even have different service menu settings, so plugging in someones settings isn't always accurate, let alone for a different model.... in fact, it usually isn't. plus not everyone has the same tastes and some go against the rules of calibration and tweak to their liking. using zerog6's settings for a starting point might be a better idea.

The SD picture was also improved immensely. Much of the credit for my second attempt goes to zerog6 in the 750 thread, although I ultimately left Gamma at default, and lowered others a bit more. Don't forget, Pic. Reset at the bottom lets you reset mode for that input. Hope this helps. Good luck.

what about white balance

It's at default which is 25 across the board. I've read about the advanced settings, but need to re-study them before I experiment further and get a calib disk. For now, I changed ones I understand and left the others, trusting them to Samsung.

Which images are you referring to? The screenshots that others have posted? If that is what you mean, you can right-click>Save Image As...

The problem with saving those images is that the resolution of the pictures will not be the same as the original movie.

I think this is why you have not had a response yet.

This is a great site which walks you through calibrating your TV.

http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10457

I will be doing this on mine either tonight or this weekend. This is also the process that zerog6 has followed in order to get his now infamous calibration settings found on the 750 threads.

If you don't have the device recommended to do the calibration, contact some local photography shops and ask if they rent the Eye-One. However, I highly recommend buying one because you can use it for your TV, computer monitor, and maybe make a few bucks calibrating family/friends TV's for them. All you need is a laptop, a free program and the Eye-One (I have the Display 2 model, but you can get away with the lower priced LT model).

Good luck!

I have, I also did not have any IR issues. But I like to keep current. I just hate the fact that the TV resets back to stock with new fireware. Then I have to change all the settings again.

Well I finally got my 8 Series today. In the end, I agreed to the 46" 860 instead of waiting for the 850. In my basement, you can't see the blue ToC at all.

Anyway, I played around with the settings -- tried and did not like zerog6's 750 settings -- and these are what I have settled on for now.

I used an Eye One Display 2 calibrator and the HCFR software. I followed the process at http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10457. Unfortunately, I did not have the color tests so I could only set my grayscale. All DeltaE's are 3 or lower, except for 0, 10, and 20 IRE, which is normal from my understanding.

FW Version: 1002
Mode: Movie
Backlight: 4
Contrast: 67
Brightness: 41
Sharpness: 7
Color: 52
Tint: G50/R50

Black Adjust: OFF
Dynamic Contrast: OFF
Gamma: +1
Color Space: Auto

White Balance:
- R-OFFSET: 26
- G-OFFSET: 26
- B-OFFSET: 28
- R-GAIN: 50
- G-GAIN: 12
- B-GAIN: 9

Flesh Tone: 0
Edge Enhance: OFF
xvYCC: ON
Color Tone: WARM 2
Digital NR: OFF
Blue Only Mode: OFF
AMP: OFF

I am hoping to get the color tests downloadedand burned to disc so I can set my Color Space. That will have to wait until next week. I'm going to enjoy the set for a few days.

Sure. Look for them sometime next week. I have a pretty packed weekend and I'm not sure if I will get a chance to play around with it.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but I tried these settings and they were simply awful...They are appear like an old time black and white TV set!! Is there something I am missing here?

I can only think that either I missed something, or the 1004 firmware has messed up my TV to the point where its really damaged.

This was calibrated on the 1002 firmware. I have a few minutes of IR issues (Comcast Motorola 6416 STB) but am afraid to upgrade FW. I may do it tonight and see how it looks. My only concern is that I cannot undo the FW upgrade if I do not like the results.

A question for those with colorimeters: Out of the box, which is closer to 6500K: Warm1 or Warm2?

I have an Eye One Display 2, but not Windows. There aren't any free calibration programs for Mac, are there?

Thanks.

Do you know anyone with a Windows laptop you can borrow? Maybe feed them or something.

do you really have color at 10, or is that a typo? that is BY FAR the lowest i've seen someone set the color setting on any TV.

I recently calibrated my ln52a860 yesterday and I thought I'd post my settings. I used and Eye rite sensor and DVE disk. The picture was great out of the box, but I think it looks even better now. My blacks are richer. I cvalibrated two different settings....movie and cinema. I occassionally use dynamic mode for some sports, but it's usually too bright for me. I was able to get my color right near 6500k, and my gamma was 2.25. I had a little trouble getting my blues to be at level. I calibrated with all the extra enhancers off, although i have found dynamic contrast to really help the picture, especially in darker shots.

movie standard
backlight 4 4
contrast 80 81
brightness 45 41
sharpness 20 20
color 50 54
tint g46/r54 g46/r54
black adj off low
dyn. contrast off off
gamma -1 -1
color space native native
white bal. red offset 25 27
green offset 25 26
blue offset 19 24
red gain 28 40
green gain 25 27
blue gain 10 5

flesh tone 0 0
edge enh. off off
color tone warm 1 normal
film mode auto 1 auto 1
amp low low

Please excuse my nubeness, but I'm trying to learn myself how to calibrate. I have the 850, and the eye one lt. I fingered out the white level and black level, but stuck on the gray scale adjustments. Where on this set do you make adjustments for rgbLOW and High ends? I am following the guide here> http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10457

Thanks

I just tried your standard settings. On Sunday night football, the white all had a brown tint to them.

I recently calibrated my new 46" 850 using the same guide along with the Eye-One LT. I believe the rgbLOW and High ends the guide refers is under detailed settings in White Balance. Offset is the rgbLow and Gain is the High. This below is taken from the guide.

"The more popular names typically used for the two controls are:

RGBLowEnd: Bias, Offset, Cuts, Cutoff, Sub-brightness, RGB brightness
RGBHighEnd: Drive, Gain, Sub-contrast, RGB contrast "

Look at my post, #50 in this thread, for good "all around" settings. Our 52A860 was bright as a lighthouse, so the major strategy was to lower the backlight.

For daytime viewing, our room is bright. For nighttime viewing, it's dark with the only light from nearby curio cabinet. I set up Standard for daytime, Movie for nighttime, and Dynamic for sports. If your night-time viewing is done with table lamps on, your backlight could be higher. If your set is less than 52", you might also try higher backlight settings. I think shutting off dynamic contrast was a big help, too. Good luck.
