I thought / was under the impression it would be more "Numbers/CSI" - ish ....
Where, at key points in the show, the camera, (from the mentalist's point of view), will zoom Very, very close in to an empty ash tray, a door ajar, a person's neck vein pulse, or side cheek sweat bead , giving the viewer a glimpse into how he really "figures things out", while others on the show don't get it or think he's psychic ...
That would have been a better approach....

I disagree respectfully .. I enjoy Psych on USA and if The Mentalist had gone this way as you preferred it would have been a Psych ripoff so I was very happy seeing the obvious differences and really enjoyed the pilot episode. I'll be adding to my must see TV list

I have never seen an episode of Psych , so I wasn't aware that this is how it's done there ....

It was this weeks special guest star. Like so many other cop shows. You knew when the credits went by. (I guess I pay attention too!)

Ooops sorry for the misunderstanding So often the comparison stuff is going on and many people are familar with Psych which is why I made the assumption so sorry about the error in judgment .

I liked the pilot and the cast. I haven't seen Psyche so I am not influenced or prejudiced either way. It did seem like they are trying to throw in a little Dexter into Baker's character. I'll definitely watch because of Tim Kang and Robin Tunney.

You tuned out before seeing his Monk impression.

I actually kind of liked the show. I'm not sure it has staying power, but it entertained me.

It was better than I expected. It has a temporary Series Link at the moment.

I keep thinking Robin Tunney is Sprague Grayden though.

Really enjoyed the second episode and actually liked it better than the premiere. The plot was edgier and more darker and the chemistry between Patrick and Lisbon was very obvious :-)

Psych got too silly for me and I dropped it.

And I missed the pilot of Mentalist. But I saw the second one last night and liked it so I will probably follow at least a few more and see how it goes.

I still like psych because of that deliberate silliness. It's not trying to be anything else. In contrast, Monk (the other USA show I watch) is starting wear a bit thin. Psych keeps me hooked with the energy level of it, while Monk is starting to show its age. It seems like he's getting a little more "mean spirited" and selfish in the way he deals with things that he wasn't in previous seasons. Before, he was more helpless. Now he's more needy.

As far as The Mentalist, I did like the second episode better. As a result, I'm keeping the series for the time being.

It's funny, though, because I had no expectation of liking the show at all - yet I do. Fringe, on the other hand (while I knew it wasn't going to grab me like previous JJ shows or the X-Files), I was looking forward to. That one is slipping slowly toward deletion for me, though.

They're going to have to quickly drop, (or greatly tone down), the female captain's , "I don't believe your ideas, so we aren't gonna check them out at all" attitide ..
He is & will be regularly solving these cases, & it won't be believable that she keeps not trusting his ideas to the point of not even allowing an assistant to make a phone call to check them out .....

I think Robin Tunney is the weakest link in the cast, I've never really liked her in anything she's done.

Absolutely, it's supposed to be silly, and that's what makes it so good.

Interesting since I think Robin is the best among the women on the series and by far the most talented and I've always liked her acting. PB was stupid letting her go but that's alright since she moved on to bigger and better things . Her chemistry with Simon is great ..
Robin was why I wanted to check out the series in the first place . I never heard of Simon Baker so he was not an incentitive but now is the added bonus

USA TODAY reports this is one of only two new shows that can be considered "hits". The other is FRINGE. MENTALIST averages 16.2 million viewers; FRINGE 10.8 million young-adult viewers.

Although I like the show, I actually am disappointed that they are avoiding the serial killer from the first episode. As a procedural it doesn't do anything interesting. If they develop good reason for Simon to be a detective then it would be way better. I really like Life. But, only when the shows are more about his back story arch. When they focus on the procedural portion of the show, it is boring.

I'm glad I started from the beginning with both of them. At least I know they will be around for a season.

I agree. I really liked the "Red John" aspect of the first episode and thought it would be something that would be sprinkled throughout the season. Maybe not every episode, but here we are 4 episodes in and no mention of Red John since then.

In the meantime, the show is getting quite predictable. The last 2 episodes I (and am sure many people) have called who the killer(s) is within the first 5 mins of the show.

Still find it very entertaining and will continue to watch, but just hope they mix in the Red John story more.

I'm already on the edge of dropping Fringe. But The Mentalist was a pleasant surprise to me.

There is something about this show. I think it reminds me of the good old mystery dramas of the 70's and 80's that I loved to watch. Hart to Hart, Colulmbo and even Rockford Files, just good old formula writing and interesting and charming characters.

The first few episodes showcased his Mentalist/psychic talent very well, I thought, however this episode seemed to have a lack of him doing anything Mentalist. He comes across more as a neurotic who has good hunches, and not as someone who is able to read a person so quickly as to make accurate assumptions. Subtle difference, but that's part of the reason that Psych is a good show.

Which is why I prefer TM alot more.. I enjoy Psych but often get tired of the gimmacky aspect watching Shawn act all crazy and while I enjoy slapstick comedy there are times I feel Psych overdoes that aspect while TM has a much more complex approach and it comes across as much more compelling .
Tonite's episode was outstanding and everyone on this series is clicking in all the right ways and why it works . No cheap sudden reveal or over the top revelations but done through complexities .

Blah this is a direct ripoff of Psych, except more boring.

If Psych was on primetime TV on NBC instead of USA it would have higher ratings then this ripoff!

Good episode, and it deals with gambling, which I consider myself to be an proficient amateur of. The last hand (despite it being a cheat) reminded me of the recent 007 film Casino Royale. It aint every day you see a straight flush.
