The latest Fringe was probably the best episode they've had, it saved me from finally saying good bye to the show, it's too bad there's no new eps until April.
I don't think "Lie To Me" is going to last at all, the main character is very unlikeable, and as you say, there's really only one "hook", plus, the show has a very bland, monotone look to it, not very inviting. It's almost like something you'd see on a Discovery Channel, like a science show, not very entertaining. The Mentalist, OTOH, is very entertaining in my opinion, the characters are likable and even if it does stretch the imagination a bit, it's good TV.
Also, there's something about the way Kelli Williams talks that annoys me, quite often she sounds like she's speaking with marbles in her mouth.
Anyway, my prediction is that come Sept, "Lie To Me" will be a distant memory while "The Mentalist" will still be racking up good ratings.
