GH World Tour vs. Rock Band 2

I think I am going to be buying one or the other this fall...

My wife and nephews have played the GH demos and they really liked them. I think this will be something we can all get into.

This will be our first try at this genre. (We have only played the demos with controllers) That said, I am a little confused between the two.

What are some differences between the two. (Pros and Cons)

A little about us:
We play just for fun and laughs. (I'm not real concerned about which is more realistic.)
We love customization so right now were leaning towards World Tour.

Any info will be helpful...

Oh jeez, not trying to start trouble are ya?

Seriously though, I would look on wikipedia and see which one has songs that you like better. Rockband had a huge headstart in this arena, so their song offerings are likely to be more of a variety compared to GH (unless GH updates their current catalog to include the other three tracks).

I think most will be buying both.

I know I'll be getting both, so I decided to get the instruments for RB2. I might also pick up a GH:WT guitar because that touch strip seems interesting. The reason I went with the RB2 drumkit is because I think that the GH:WT's kit's 3 pads and two cymbals will be awkward for playing RB2, because the 4th pad isn't always a cymbal, that sort of thing. Using the RB2 kit on GH:WT, you will be missing the 5th note, but the game will compress notes down to use only four, which I think will be much less awkward.

Not trying to start trouble, just trying to get more insight...

I've done quite a bit of reading, but wanted some more info before purchasing.

I read Rock Band's DLC can be used on RB2. I like that idea. Can GH World Tour take advantage of DLC from previous GH games? (If not, does GH offer a decent amount of content after their releases?)

The group behind Rockband 1 and 2 (harmonix) is the group that created Guitar Hero 1 and 2, before GH3 and GH:WT. The differences between the two, is Harmonix seems to be made up of musicians. Neversoft (GH:WT) is a bunch of game makers. That's why they have things like boss battles.....When I play these types of games I have no interest in competing with someone else.

I'll be getting both games because it's a ton of songs together, instruments probably from RB.

Thanks guys,

I have another question regarding the drum kits.

The GH Kit has: Snare, High Tom, Low Tom, HH, Crash, and Kick
The RB Kit has: 4 Pads and Kick. (Are you saying these pads change per song, or are the mapped a specific way?)

I'm a little confused as to RB's drums. I seen the Ion kit but it seems that the cymbals just replace two of the pads. Is this correct?

Colors don't change so as long as you hit the right color when it goes by it's not a big deal. Only the sound changes depending on the song. Green is in most cases a crash cymbal, sometimes it changes to a low tom. Each pad has probably switched to something it doesn't normally represent during at least one song.

Thanks, that makes more sense.

I read RB has cymbals you can add and I thought that would make the other two pads useless. I understand now...

Just getting into it this fall, Rock Band 2 would be the one that I would recommend getting. There is vastly more content available for it, plus the World Tour mode allows you to set up a party atmosphere very easily. If you decide you really like the style of game, then grab Rock Band 1 later to import 55 of it's tracks, and then maybe the Guitar Hero games after that.
I think if you only could buy one, Rock Band 2 would be hands down the one to get. And the RB drums + cymbal kit would be better than the GHWT kit, as you could use it in both games without any compatibility issues. Using the GHWT kit on Rock Band would just be awkward...

So I'd get RB2, and if you enjoy it maybe pick up the GHWT game only when it comes out...

A few more quetions:

Does RockBand let you customize characters/instruments. (This is a big one for the wife)
Any rumor as to how much the cymbal add-on will cost? (This will also help put things into perspective)

Are instruments of each compatible with both?

I kind of like GH's Drums because they have 6 dedicated pads while RB only has 5 (Kicks included) Again, I'm new to all of this...

1) Yes
2) $29.99
3) Yes

GH does have an extra pad for drums, it's true, but I really think the layout of the RB drums with the cymbal add on will be far superior.

I'm thinking the same about the drums... (Not totally sold however)

At this point it just seems like apples and oranges, which is cool.

I'm going to have to search some videos on RB's customization.

and just remember that you just need a copy of the game, so either renting a copy of the game or borrowing a friends copy of the game will work fine, and save you some coin for something you actually need...

i personally plan on getting both games, but i will probably only get the RB2 game and the GHWT game and instruments, only because i already own a set of RB and GH instruments that work well. if i was starting from scratch, i would probably get the RB2 instruments though, but that's not to say that i wouldn't get the GHWT drums when they're released...

I hear you...

Both systems come with only one guitar correct? Maybe I'll get the new GH guitar and the RB guitar. (Best of both worlds)

I'm still a little confused on the drums however. How can the RB drums be used on GH if they only have 5 inputs?

"How can the RB drums be used on GH if they only have 5 inputs?"

The games aren't out yet, so we don't really know.

I wasn't sure if it had been answered in an article of sorts. I'm sure a lot of people have been following the development of these games.

Here's another question I haven't seen in articles.

When someone is singing into the Mic, does the voice come through the speakers or not?
If so, does the game add any kind of reverbs/delays? If so, are they based upon the song, or just a generic reverb?

Actually we do know. Activision has said the game will detect the RB drums and drop the orange pad. So you'll have 4 colors + kick in GHWT.

I don't know what you mean by this. You can go to Wikipedia, get the complete song list for both games and make the decision yourself. What is better for one person won't be better for another.

In general, no. GH:3 DLC will not be compatible with GH:WT for the most part. There is one huge exception, though. The latest DLC (Metallica's new album) is actually two DLC packs in one. You can use it for both GH3 and GH:WT. But that is the only pack that is true for.

To answer the original question, I think the best thing to do is find out which instruments you like better. I personally prefer the GH guitar to the RB guitar, but others feel differently. Once you get the instruments you like, because of the compatibility, you can get the other disc and use your current instruments.

Looking at the drum note charts online for GH:WT, and they look AWEFUL...

I'm not sure how anyone is going to be able to see the notes that scroll across the screen --- and the bass drum is some pale purple color that is very difficult to see. RB's drum interface looks alot cleaner.

People who've actually played it say that it's visible when actually playing. But I do agree that a different color probably should have been used.

Also, Hot for Teacher is not the best song to show the bass drum because of the constant bass drum beat.

Wow, yeah. Definitely should be changed to a different color before release.

I want to get one of these games this year, but it look like Guitar Hero is going to have better hardware and Rock Band will probably have the better game. Hmm.
Great thread.. I'm also interested in both but only plan to buy one as a party game. From what I read looks like RB2 is the best party game.

Way too early to say RB2 is a better party game. RB1 was definitely a better party game than GH3. But GH:WT isn't out yet. No one really knows which is the better party game.

Also no way to say that GH will have better hardware. As it stands the new RB2 drums are pretty great. GH drums will really have to work well to compete (and they better fix the flimsy cymbals).

Guitar wise we know the new RB2 guitar is good, although very similar to the last one. That just comes down to preference, though - as what's better to me may not be better to you.

And no one cares about the microphones.
