Review? Have you read through this thread?

The only problem seems to be with the connection from the box to the set. I'm using the RF adapter and there's a lot of snow. This is not from the reception, since the snow appeared on the setup screen before any signals were found. It's consistent on menu screens and on TV channels.

Any idea on what could be causing this? I've tried channels 3 and 4 with no change.

I ordered 2 apparently about the same time as you and I have the same problem in both. Testing convinces me that the problem is internal to the box

Had the same problem with mine NOISY power supply (wall wart).

Called the place where I got the unit and he gave me an 800 number to call.
They sent me a replacement wall wart (different style) pretty quickly and that solved the problem.

Mind giving those of us with the Sunkey (aka Craig) unit the number?

thanks for the info!

For anyone else with this problem, a temporary workaround if you have one of the newer analog TV sets with several sets of RCA inputs (The red white and yellow cables usually used to connect video game consoles) is to, instead of using channel 3 or 4, connect your Sunkey through the RCA cables only and then change your TV's video mode to accept input from the alternate source.

Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to put one's VCR in the loop using only RCA cables

It's lost in the mess on my desk or I no longer have it.

The number was to the specific supplier who provided product to where I got my Sunkey... freetvsignal.com

If you got your Sunkey from freetvsignal.com then ring them up or email.

If you got your Sunkey elsewhere contact that seller.

Just got my SK-801ATSC along with an Artec T3AP-LS from FreeTVSignal.com. It only took four days (which included a weekend) from ordering to having the CECBs on my doorstep. Pretty nice considering it was completely free and I didn't even need to give a credit card number. My SK-801ATSC says it has Software Ver. x1.00-112108A, though I don't see any differences in the menus from the photos that were posted earlier in this thread. (To be clear: This box still just has the simple one channel now/next guide.)

I can't comment on the RF interference issues, as I had it hooked up via RCA composite cables, and the picture quality looked good overall. I did test to see that the power supply from the Artec unit does work fine with the Sunkey. The Artec unit's power supply says it is 12V/0.5A where the Sunkey one is 12V/0.8A. But, as I said, they appear to work interchangeably. I believe these are also a couple of the only units that will work hooked up to a 12V battery, which is what I was intending for them.

As for reception, it gets all of my local channels in perfectly with a signal between 80-90%, and a quality of 100%. But I intend to take these two boxes to a place where there is very sketchy signals, so I will be able to see which performs better then.

One big positive for the Sunkey is having the channel buttons on the box. Since I'll only have a couple of channels available, using the remote may be unnecessary. One huge drawback of the Sunkey unit is the menus look like garbage. The fonts are tiny, and since I wanted to use this on a 13" TV, I probably won't be able to even see the channel numbers at that screen size. The Artec unit is much better in that respect, and is probably one of the nicer CECB's I've used. But reception is everything for my purpose, so I will test both soon and report back my findings.

I've been troubleshooting a a noise issue on a TV with analog cable for a couple of weeks now. I finally isolated it--it's the awful Sunkey wall wart (I can plug it in--without connecting it to the converter box--and immediately see the interference on low analog TV channels)!

I called them (http://rjtech.net/info.php?catId=246&f=repairRequest) and the tech promised to send me a new wall wart via UPS.

[Just FYI, contact info for all CECB brands is available from this government website: http://www.dtv.gov/converterbox.htm ]

Any ideas what the new power supply looks like? I am not sure if I am affected.

The one causing problems for me and others is model SKCH06-1210 with the date code 2008/08 on the sticker.

You do know that this problem was reported earlier in this thread?

Yes. I was providing the Sunkey contact information which was heretofore not included in the thread.

No antenna (and I don't think gov't coupons are accepted), but it's also available for $32.99 from Happy Iguana.

You know, that site has pretty lax security 'standards', since, if you follow the info they tell you about how to enter the coupon and such, they then transmit that exact info to your e-mail address... They should have masked out the coupon number, or do the last 4 digits like most other places do.

Which would mean, there is a chance that, that info can be captured... not that it matters much in this case, but still... Yeah, the site is listed as a authorized coupon partner, so I am just nitpicking.

Still a nice deal for people who can't find any decent converter boxes, and want to spend as little as possible.

Although I'm sure a lot know this,
and to NOT cross-post.

I would like to cross-link to
what APPEARS to be an identical offering.

The Craig CVD508

It is a basic technician tear-down and peek inside thread.

Note:
Although I have E-Mail'd them twice,
they fail to provide a link to their product...

Just an update--I received the new power supply. It looks exactly like the defective one (same model number, etc.). It, however, does not have a date code sticker, but, rather, an etched-in date code (sometime in 2009).

That's an unusual discrepancy.
In fact, the only thing I like about my Sunkey box is its tuner. The remote, OSD, IR receiver, EPG, etc. are pretty poor. The tuner, however, is nice.

Well I'm using a Radio Shack Antanna with a Knob on it.I'm must be turning it to get a weak signal

The fonts are hard to see if your trying to scan on a 3 inch TV

I got in on this. Also came with a free HDMI cable.

I'm still saving my other coupon for a box with S-Video (is Apex the only one?).

Either way sure can't beat the price.

Channel Master 7000 and maybe a coupla others. I say "maybe" because I never of heard of these other ones on Wiki down the S-Video column:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CECB_units

'Carefree?' I wonder if these are new adds to Wiki?

Yeah, I tried to open a dialog with that company about american retail.
They chose not to market in the USA, the profit margin was just to slim.

You can read the details in the thread I started about Those CAREFREE CECB's.

Oh yeah, I tested the power adaptor that came with my Sunkey for noise and I found none whatsoever. My adaptor looks exactly like the noisy ones too; except it also has its date code hot-stamped into the plastic. (090221)

Speaking of Sunkey, they're getting even more mileage out of those cases...

Interesting. Too bad, sounds like it might have been a good box for 'US.'
Looks like you had better luck than I had trying to get production info out of Zinwell (Zinnet); vicious circle of telling me what I already knew instead of answering my questions.
