Prospective buyers of the RS 15-100 should known that not only is the learning capacity 34 (1 device) to 50 keys (2 devices, YMMV), its been reported that it can't learn to the left arrow key. Anyways, using preprogrammed codes insures you'll have more memory for future (or replacement) devices.
I'm with you- everyone is at risk of the orginal remote getting lost, or damaged.
Universal remote is the way to go!
Codes like you say are always best due to memory space available- but the remote has to have the latest codes.
That said I've read the DTVPal, TR-40CRA, DTVPal Plus use EchoStar /Dishnetwork codes that have been used for many years so a remote several years old should work without it being "updated" with new codes.
(Ditto I've read on the RCA units)
Here's my experience so far:Zenith DTT901 (AKA Insignia NS-DXA1-APT)

UEI manufactured remotes are sold under the All-for-One, and RadioShack label.RadioShack 8-in-1 15-100
Tried listed Zenith (and I think LG) codes with no effect. (maybe I should go back and retry)
Used the learning feature and it works fine with the Zenith DTT901.
(Left arrow key is un-programmable unless it's read via JP1, re-mapped and written back to remote)Kameleon 8-in-1 remote, RadioShack #15-2138 (URC-2133)
. As per the UEI site "updated" codes are needed and N/A.
Used the learning feature and it works fine with the Zenith DTT901.Kameleon URC-9660 8-in-1 "One-for-All" -
Codes are outdated/ possibility maybe to update via it's built in modem but used learning feature due to restrictions on the upgrade procedure (Have to call from a land-line "corded-phone", and I've read it can't be a DSL line...as the DSL filters filter out the needed frequencies. Hoping when, if I get around to contacting One-For-All they can provide codes and e-mail code.
(The European site for the UEI remotes provides a web-based service for later units- you type your model ID in, and in a couple of seconds you download a WAV file you play back thru your PC)Harmony /Logitech brand:Harmony 628-
Works PERFECT with the ZENITH DTT901.APEX DT502
(autoupdated via the Harmony website) and remote partially works.
Vol+ and Vol- Power ON/OFF, plus some other keys NOT working... Used the Learn: feature but it did not work- Would give confirmation it had "seen" the key press - but for some reason it didn't "take" and in fact cause the remote itself to cycle back to the start screen.Zinwell ZAT-970A-0827=
Have CECB Not tested yet with Universal remoteDTVPal /TR-40CRA, DTVPal PLus
= Waiting for coupons, waiting for next firmware revision to order units- I'm assume most ANY universal remote will have the codes for these unitsDTVPal DVR
= After all the reported problems with the DTVPal series- I'm waiting to see how this unit fares.
Reportedly most all the problems on the DTVPal units and others is the TVGOS data not being transmitted , or not being transmitted properly.
Check to see if the data is being transmitted in your market HERE:
