HDMI Video With Optical Audio?

I'm looking for a new receiver, possibly a Denon 1709 or 1909. I have one basic question... can I have it play audio from an optical source while playing video from an HDMI source (that is not providing audio)?

The main reason is because I use my computer for HTPC gaming in addition to a cable box and PS3 that would be hooked up to the receiver. On the PC I am using DVI + HDMI adapter for video, with Optical audio. This has worked well for me and I don't see why I should change it. However, on my TV it's annoying to cycle through all the different video sources when I switch between PC and cable/PS3, it switches very slowly. I'd like to have everything run through a receiver so the TV only has to deal with one input, as it's easier to switch through things using a receiver.

That would work, hopefully. On my receiver, I can independently select the audio and video inputs associated with each source selection. I am not sure how Denon's routing options works though.

Not necessarily answering your specific question, but FYI - the 1709 doesn't do ANY audio over HDMI so you wouldn't get lossless sound on the PS3. If you want HDMI audio from the PS3 you need the 1909/789 at a minimum.

Good point on the 1709, thanks. So... that means I could still use optical audio while watching video from an HDMI input, right?

correct....

however, you would have to do the same thing with the PS3 also, anything you want with HDMI would have to have a separate audio cable, and there aren't THAT many optical inputs on the back... trust me, if you have a PS3 you definitely want to step up to the 1909/789.

cool... that's fine.... what I really was after was making sure I could properly use my PC/PS3 on atleast the 1909/789 using HDMI for video while the audio was coming through optical.
