The "Official" Onkyo TX-SR876 Owners Thread - Page 8

After Audessey setup my CS480 5.1 speakers
were set Sub=yes, Front=120, Center=150, Surround=150 Hz.
Now my Sub is NOT setup automatically if understand correctly.
Should I set my SUB level to 80(THX), 90, 100, or 120?

PS if you read my prior post in this thread about deffective front right
channel not working - newegg.com did come thru and replaced
my first receiver w/ new one-no problems so far
post #212 of 4979
Prutik, I would say, if you used the crossover settings from the auto setup, to set your sub at 120. This way, there are no gaps. Where your front speakers fade off, your sub would pick up. I bypassed the settings myself, and went with 90 on my fronts and sub. Listen for a while at different settings, and see what you think.

(Posted this in the 906 thread, as well) What I'd like to know is if there's a way to change volume level output per audio format/signal (similar to the Intellivolume setting for different components).

For example, when I'm watching DirecTv, with an HD channel and Dolby Digital, and then I change channels to a SD with PCM. The PCM is a great deal louder (even with Dynamic Volume active). Is there anything to do about this?

I tried another disc in the Panny BD30 and seems to be only with the DTS Master HD I get the right front speaker noise at random times. With Dolby, PCM, no problems with the noise from this speaker. Also, I tried my Oppo 983 and as I expected no problems with standard DTS, or DD. So I wish anyone else with a BD30 could chime in if they find any problems similar to what I get!

Hi i was also alarmed by the extreme pop when navigating chapters (BD30 + 876) on "Dark City" 7.1 Dts HD M but the problem was absent with "Bank Job" 7.1 Dts HD so i think it must be the way the discs are mastered! strangely neither disc gave any problem with my previous 606 and BD30!

On my cable box, there is a volume control which affects the PCM volume but
not Dolby DIgital volume. I have adjusted it so they are more equal now.

Yes

From the manual pg 110

IntelliVolume
With IntelliVolume, you can set the input level for each
input selector individually. This is useful if one of your
source components is louder or quieter than the others.

You should give the Audyessy thread a quick look. The fellow from Audyessy has some specific suggestions for setting the LFE crossover point.

Your JBL sub claims an upper limit of 120 Hz at -6 dB, the satellites have a claimed lower limit point of -6 dB of 110 Hz and the center's is a claimed 100 Hz.

Room interactions could easily change that by several dB so the Audessey settings seem reasonable. If everything were perfect your sub and satellites would each be down -6 dB at about the same frequency. That would raise the combined response about 3 dB to give an essentially flat response in the crossover region.

Setting it at 120 can result in some ability to localize the sub, but you really don't have a choice given the rather high low end limit on your speakers. Many makers overstate the low end response capability of their products, but the figure given for your JBLs looks honest, given the size of the drivers.

You might want to try moving the sub slightly and your listening position slightly and rerunning the auto setup. Audessey seems very sensitive to small relative position changes (arrival time delay).

After more testing I find more problems with Dolby TrueHD also. When 5th. Element starts I get popping from both front speakers and it's pretty loud. Tried this with the Sony S350 and just a faint noise not enough to worry about. I disabled the BD30 bitstream and had it send PCM and no more noise. It must be the 876 and BD30 combo not working correctly. I played these discs hooked to my 805 and never had this problem. So here we go again, whenever we get new hardware and use Blu-Ray we never know what to expect, and making it worse, some major studios author discs that create problems also. Could the 876 need a DSP update? So what's a guy to do?
On a positive note! The sound is just fantastic using the new Dynamic EQ and THX Loudness Plus! Especially with BD movies!

Thanks to cinema mad suggestion to try swapping HDMI cable that seems to have fixed the speaker popping noise with the BD30. I get a small bit of noise with the Sony 350 so I will try new cable with it as well.
Fixed!!! so I thought! Wow, after playing another movie random pops are still happening, even after took disc out of BD30 and setting idle for a few minutes a moderately loud pop from the right front speaker. I checked all wires and connections, only happens with the BD30! What should I do? Anyone?

I have the same snap crackle and pop, but out of my Left Surr. Back speaker. I too checked all connections and still the same thing. I had the 875 and never had this issue? It is so noticable that I have unhooked this speaker. Called the co that I bought it from and he thinks it is the surround decoder, not the amp or anything like that. It happens on all sources, DTV, BD-35, HD-A35. Anyone has any advice please chime in.

can someone post a picture of the on screen display? What little I've been able to read on the new OSD it seems to be better than the older models, just curious what it now looks like.....also, for all the new owners, on a scale from 1-10 how would you rate the 879 overall, audio performance, and upscaling performance? Thanks!

Mine only pops with my BD30 so far. Have you tried using PCM with BD35 or HD35? I don't get the pop with PCM audio or bitstream using the Sony S350.

Do you mean the 876? If so, audio is great to me when using Dynamic EQ! There is some pictures of the setup menu in first few pages of this thread. It looks a bit better than older models to me.

yeah, I meant the 876.....thanks. The OSD looks pretty good, not the Denon or the Sony but this seems to be the better option for the video/audio combo....though still wavering between the 806 & 876....
If you can afford the 876 it's got much better specs. than the 806!

+1 on dynamic eq I had bass issues in my room before I got my 876. I couldn't be happier with the way the 876 sounds. the bass seems much cleaner and o have better punch.

i had some problem with video upscalling on 876 last night.

from ps3,i connect using HDMI output to HDMI1 input on 876 and output through Main HDMI to my panasonic AE900 720p projector.

no matter what resolution setting i set on 876 HDMI monitor out ( through,source,720p,1080i,576p,480p),the display only show 480,4:3.

I tested 2 Blu-Ray,Celion Deon Concert and Galapagos, both only output 480p 4:3.Both Celion and Galapagos i watched b4 and both are fine. The strange part is when i tested another Blu-Ray,Surf Up,everything seem to be fine.

Can anyone here advice please ? Thanks in advance.

Although Ive had problems with my BD30 and the 876 I'm extremely happy.
Using the new Audyssey dynamic EQ and Dynamic volume set to light, I now can understand more than 95% of dialog in most movies. This is a real treat for me not having to always use subtitles. This new technology also lets me hear very close to what reference level audio sounds like, but at a lower more comfortable volume. The sound of my PC-13Ultra sub. never sounded so good, it's like having heard it's potential for the first time! All I can say is for me the new Audyssey Dynamic sound works wonders for me! I highly recommend this receiver!

The only reason I could think of why you would get a 480 picture instead
of a 1080 is because some copy protection issue, HDCP, Macrovision, but
maybe that is far fetched?

Since I have similar problems, I'm replacing mine from Big River. I think there must be a small percentage of these that have defects, and looks like we both have one.
Update! Just powered on the 876 after being off all night and before applying power to my PS3, I get speakers pop when the Onkyo logo comes on TV screen. It definitely must be defective for sure!

what does the PS3 display window say is the resolution? If the PS3 says 720p it might be the 867; if not it might be the disc issue...

Did you resolve the problem?

If not, did you follow these instructions to set up the HDMI output? I ask because I believe that the default output is 480.

I've read that the HQV Reon processors are the best available for DVD upscaling in consumer products, but that the Reon in the Onkyo products is not nearly as good at upscaling as dedicated Video Players with Reon chips. Is this the case, and has anybody here been dissapointed with the SD upscaling from this reciever or not seen a difference in the Onkyo 876 as compared to non Reon HQV products? I am looking at something that upscales DVD quite well, better than the Panasonic Blu-Ray players available right now, and i dont want to invest $300 in an Oppo for just DVD playback. Thanks in Advance

I brought home my 876 this past Tuesday. I have barely had the time to set it up yet. I am going tomorrow to get the first part of my speaker setup. I'll be running Energy RC-30s with the RC-LCR center, RC-R surrounds and the ESW-v10 sub. I'm looking forward to getting it all plugged in and running.

One question, what is Pure Audio? I noticed that when I switch to Pure Audio the video output goes off after a second or two. Maybe this is nothing as I haven't had a chance to play around yet. My source was a DVD player with component inputs for video and only analog inputs for sound. video out was via HDMI.

the Pure Audio listening mode.
When this mode is selected, the AV receiver’s display is turned off and only video signals input through HDMI IN can be output.
the display and video circuitry are turned off, minimizing possible noise sources for the ultimate in high-fidelity reproduction.
You can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers, except when the Direct, Pure Audio or THX listening mode is selected.
The Music Optimizer is disabled when the Pure Audio or Direct listening mode is selected
A/V Sync cannot be set when the Pure Audio listening mode is selected, or when the Direct listening mode is used with an analog input source.

I have not done comparisons using a calibration disc (I have the DVE box and Netflix has the disc). But here is my take with a variety of DVDs.

Compared to my older but fairly good Panasonic S97 (Faroudja) the 906/876 Reon is superior, at least with my display. The improvement is significant overall, but the impact does seem to vary depending upon the program material. The 906/876 Reon filters are better.

Compared to the Toshiba HD-A30 (Anchor Bay) the difference is less and fairly subtle, but still visible.

The 906/876 Reon does a terrific job with (drum roll) edge enhancement and up conversion.

So, no, I am pleased and not disappointed by the Reon in the 906/876. I am disappointed by the lack of zoom control from the remote, but not the PQ.

Post edited to remove misleading sin of omission. AFIK the two models have the same Reon setup.

The dv-983H does produce a better image when allowed to passthrough the receiver at 1080p than any standard definition source I've seen upscaled by the receiver.
