I also checked the firmware and all the elements are there. I had seen where some people were missing video firmware, but mine seems to have it all.

I didn't see any mention in your first post about assigning HDMI inputs to your logical inputs. Have you done this?

I have a computer with blue ray player hooked up via hdmi and the reciever hookup to the tv via hdmi. my cable is currently hooked up componet still have to buy another hdmi calble. Dont know if the computer is getting in the way of the high quaility sound settings.

Thanks

Is the Blu-ray sound going into the 876 via PCM or bitstream?

I set-up inputs through the on screen menu. So when I put the Blu-Ray into HDMI 1, I made sure that HDMI 1 was the input for "DVD". I tried matching "DVD" up to HDMI 2 (and switching) but still same issue.

I can pull the hdmi cable out of the receiver and put it in the TV and it works right away.

As well when I tried component video for my DVD recorder I set-up the inputs for "DVD/PVR" though the inputs menu.

It doesn't seem to want to process any video through the unit, just the menu from the 876 itself.

Thanks for the help so far!

Hello!

Try pulling out HDMI OUT cable and see if you still have the "no signal" on your 876 display. If not, at least you know the signal is getting into your receiver ok (HDMI 1).

Maybe also try turning receiver off and leaving blu-ray and plasma on. Then, turn on the Receiver to see if that makes a difference.

That explains why you are not seeing DTS, Dolby Digital, etc......the player is most likely doing the decoding and sending the signal as PCM. If you want to hear those formats unaltered, then you will want to cycle through the surround formats until you get to MultiChannel. If you are listening to a 5.1 track and want to matrix sounds to the rear surround speakers, then try one of the other listening modes like PLIIx.

Anybody know if there is a way I can discreetly switch between zoom and regular aspect ratios with a harmony remote with this receiver?

Nope... no such code available AFAIK, but if you do find out, let me know as well...

I had the same problem when I first got my 876. I ended up:
On the receiver: HDMI Main Out , Resolution set to AUTO
Pana BD30, Resolution> Auto > Hdmi 1 > DVD (input) on the onkyo
TV.>res> 1080..
Note on the Onkyo switch to another source (CD,tuner) then back to DVD
The theory with HDMI is 2-way communication.... what happen with my first time set-up was probably lack of.....after I did this I am able to set my res to whichever I want (through, source,1080P etc.)
Good luck

I've read through most of this thread and the 875 thread, and I had a question that I couldn't find an answer to. Does the Onkyo TX-SR875 still have video problems with the Reon scaler? I am thinking about buying the 875used however I don't see a reason to buy it over the 805 if the scaler still is off because a firmware fix hasn't been pushed out from Onkyo and won't ever be pushed out from what I've beed reading.

Okay got it to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!

But I gotta come clean....

I did set-up the above, but didn't work at first, man this is frustraiting, I have to take this back I said to myself! Then I noticed for some reason HDMI 3 all of sudden worked by why? I had switched the HDMI cable around, hmmmm this doesn't make sense or does it? Then I decided to actually read the labels on the back of the unit. Dohh!

Tip: Make sure you know what input is labelled "HDMI 1"

Enough said.

I know for a fact the the 875 still has the problems with the Reon when handling a YCbCr and less pronounced when handling a RGB signal. I have the 875 with the latest firmware I think it is 1.08 and the problem is there.

I have seen some data from the 1st post that shows that the 876 does not have this problem. I shd be able to verify in a week or two, but rickardl data is pretty clear.

I've had my 876 for a while now, but I havent used it's video capablities at all. Well that's not entirely true as I've used to the on-screen setup via HDMI output to 1080i. My TV is an old Rear Projection Mits (1080i only) Wont take a 720p signal at all. There was a lot of overscan on the setup screen though....

Anyway, I'm about to buy a Blu Ray player so how should I set it up?

Should I send the native Blu Ray 1080p signal to the 876 and have it convert it to 1080i for my tv? or should I have the bluray player send 1080i to the receiver? Should this have any impact on the potential overscan concern?

Any advice would be appreciated... (BTW looking at the panasonic bd60)

My first inclination would be to leave the BD player at 1080p and let the 876 do the conversion to 1080i. However... it would be simple enough to try it both ways and see which you prefer.

Well we hooked up the Onkyo TX-SR876 to the Panasonic BD-60 via HDMI and then HDMI out to the Epson 6500. Testing out the Onkyo with the BD-60 for the first time and there was no sound from the front L and R channels. center and surrounds were ok.

Did the MIC Calibration testing and it was not detecting the left front speaker. Then for some reason it started working and was working great for a hour or so. Then upon moving the entertainment stand the L and R channels stopped again. Tried the tuner and nothing in Stereo. Connections are good. Hook the surround speakers to the front and no sound either. Connected the surrounds back to the their channels and they were working just fine. So the front speakers are fine. I am not to sure on what to do.

I dont really want to open her up to see check the inside as i am really new to this. Any suggestions? Good time to check for Warranty service?

The issues with troublesome colourspace conversions that existed in the previous models
has apparently been fixed with the 876.

Ever since I upgraded the firmware up to 1.04 I've had problems with the video becoming "stuck" or "froze" when I switch inputs. Audio goes along with the new input, but video stays stuck at the previous input and froze. Has anyone seen this? Any ideas how to resolve?

In a previous post I had my receiver worked on via warranty. The problem the right surround back channel was blown (finding out manufacturing did not put a screw in for the heatsink, causing overheating)...anyway it was shipped back to me finding out all the right channels (F,S,SB, right speakers not working) brought it back and the tech found the speaker modules came loose via shipping. He showed me the modules and I can see the poor design via manufacturing. The speaker modules plug into the motherboard (like sound cards for computers) and can easily come loose form movement.. especially shipping...sounds like what MAYBE has happened in your situation...at your own risk you can open it up and make sure they are secure..or better yet..ship for warranty coverage.
Hope this helps!

Hello, is it possible to use 4 Bi-wire speakers in a 5.1 setup on the
Onkyo 876 ?

If so, how do i connect ?

I can only find some help in the manual for one set of Bi-wire speakers, not two sets........... (4 speakers, 2 front, 2 back)

Thanks for the help :-)
If you mean bi-amping 4 speakers, no it is not possible. You can bi-amp your main speakers in a 5.1 set up, or use the additional set of amps for rear surround in a 7.1 set up, but there are only 7 channels of amplification, not 9 that would be needed to run 4 channels off of 2 amps each. You can bi-wire as many speakers as you want if they have separate inputs for the sub and tweeter. Bi-wire means to just run two separate wires off of the same amp output with one each going to the sub and tweeter inputs on your speaker. Either of these seems like major over-kill for surround speakers, unless you have full-range surrounds and listen to a lot of music in Full Mono or All Channel Stereo, or something that is going to send a full bandwidth signal to all speakers. This would completely kill any imaging.

Just FINALLY hooked up my system.

I have SVS SCS-01 fronts/center and SBS rear with the SVS Downfiring sub. When I set it up the first time I reemmber audessy seting my fronts to like 90HZ my center to 120Hz and rear to like 60hz... not sure if thats correct..

I got my TV and stand put together and RE-did the audessy setup.. now the fronts were 90Hz, center 60hz and rear 60hz...

does this sound right...

Can somone recommend some good settings....

I have the Onkyo TX-SR876 receiver running 4.1 in my main room and feeding 6 other rooms via Zone 2 and a Niles SS-6 speaker selector. I've been running it this way since December, but just this weekend, the sound going to Zone 2 is getting distorted/static-y and sometimes the unit will power off Zone 2 automatically. Today I noticed the Niles SS-6 was putting off some heat. Not sure if I should be using a speaker selector with its own power, but I think someone at Crutchfield said the Onkyo could power the speakers through a non-powered speaker selector.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

Hey all, although I'm not in the market for such a high end unit (getting Denon avr-1910, budget is $400 -$500 range) I got an email yesterday for a good deal on the txsr876.

Newegg will discount $700.00 if you enter "RECEIVER6227" on the promo code box when checking out, just an fyi for anyone on the fence regarding this unit. Coupon expires 6/26/09.

When the Onkyo shuts down it indicates overheating caused by excessive current draw. That suggests that the load impedance in Zone 2 is on the low side for the Onkyo and/or you are trying for a sound level that demands more current than the Onkyo can deliver safely. Have you checked the impedance of your remote speakers and calculated the combined load if you run more than one pair at a time.

The Onkyo is fairly robust, but multiple speaker pairs can easily combine to create a very low total load--to low for continuous operation.

The Niles has a "protection" switch, but does not appear to offer impedance matching. That suggests that the "protection" device is a solid state current limiter of some sort. These can fail with use and become noisy on the way to total failure.

If you are unfamiliar with Ohm's Law there are some useful speaker impedance calculators on the web. If you still have issues, repost with a description of the speakers (make, model and nominal impedance) and how you have them wired.

Thoughts?

Should I call Amazon and trade it out?

Did anyone else find a fix for this issue?

My new Onkyo 876 is doing this too. The sound cuts out for a second. When the sound cuts out the "tuned" indicator on the display flickers off. My last receiver, a Yahmaha, did not have this problem, so I'm pretty sure it is not a weak signal. This is setting to fairly big FM stations here.

Is it an antenna problem? or just a crappy tuner in the receiver? or is this a defect?

Using Audyssey the 876 is setting my THX certified rear speakers to 120hz. I have read that manually increasing the crossover is OK but reducing it in this case to 80hz (the THX crossover point) means that Audyssey has not calibrated down to this level.

Any thoughts ?

Cheers
Hi, I just bought the 876 and I had a few questions I need help with. I have been reading the Audyssey Setup guide provided at the beginning of this forum and I am a little confused. From what I understand, I should make certain settings on my Sub before I run Audyssey. I own a Aperion Audio Intimus S-12 Subwoofer. Can someone explain where to set the 3 dials on my sub in the picture I have uploaded. I don't think I have a LPF? I think I set the phase at 0, I am not sure where to set the crossover and level at?

The Audyssey setup instructions talk about calibrating the speakers once first to get the controls on the sub just right? Basically I am just focusing on the sub settings and not really the speaker settings for this first go around. Does this sound right?

Thanks for your help. I have read all 84 pages of this forum and I have been trying to soak in all this information. It's quite a bit to learn at first. Everyone here has provided a great deal of helpful information.

you should set the crossover level as high as it will go and let the receiver apply the filtering. I would set the level control to about 3:00. If it is too high the receiver will tell you and you can knock it down a bit.
best,
chris
