Can the 7216 stream audio/photos from a Mac? If so, what's needed?

Thanks in advance!

If you believe the rumors, we'll see a Motorola 320GB DVR (non-functional eSATA) from Verizon in the 4th quarter of 2009, followed by a new version of the Cisco 8600 DVR (functional eSATA) for MRDVR customers in the first quarter of 2010. That should silence many of the complaints about limited capacity, although some non-MRDVR customers not be happy about the added cost of eSATA expansion.

Until these new models are out, your only options for storage expansion are high-definition CableCard DVRs like the TiVo and Moxi, plus PCs with the appropriate motherboard and CableCard tuners. Al of these solutions can support at least 2TB.

Cables have nothing to do it. Give the HDMI design specification to ten engineers and you'll find at least a few with a slightly different interpretation. Broadcom and Motorola are primarily responsible for the firmware, so cable providers are at the mercy of those companies to ensure compatibility with as many TVs as possible. In some cases, the firmware may need to incorporate specific workarounds for those CE vendors with "unique" implementations of the HDMI specification.

No. You can copy local channel content as it is played using Firewire (unless it carries the broadcast flag). But all other cable channels are encrypted and that content cannot be saved Firewire to a PC. It could be saved to D-VHS tape, but it would be flagged as "copy no more," so it could not then be copied from tape with a non-CableCard PC.

You can learn more about other solutions (i.e. the only solutions) for saving content to a computer in this thread from a few days ago.

I'm curios if the new units will have a "native resolution" option?

All Cisco DVRs have "native" output capability.

New FiOS customer here. Getting it installed next week in Pittsburgh. After reading this thread, I'm really curious to see what box I get.

My TV, old (2006) Westinghouse, does not have HDMI, but instead DVI. What's your opinion on quality from the STB using component or HDMI (converted to DVI)? I'll have to run out and get an HDMI cable with converter (DVI cable is in use by HTPC). My component cables are pretty cheap too so I might get new cables instead.

And what do yall think of the doing the install without a TV? The moving truck isn't coming with my TV until after the install.

Thanks!

Onkyo out to Vizio HDMI 1.
I keep getting a green screen after the tv shows the channel it is tuned to.

Verizon gave me a new DVR and the same problem.
Any help?

I have the same Onkyo receiver (TX SR606) and when I had DirecTV had no HDMI issues. When I went to FiOS TV in May, I ended up using the component outs because I couldn't get the HDMI link out of the FiOS DVR to give a stable output. I never concluded whether the issue was FiOS DVR or Onkyo receiver. I need to actually turn the receiver off to switch from the TV to the Blu-Ray HDMI input.

I live in Groton, MA and FIOS TV just became available. I have had FIOS TV now for 3 weeks and the service is great... wonderful picture quality and lots of HD to feed my HD TV. This is even more true since my previous cable company was Charter... the worst cable company in the country.

But.. I have noticed that my 7216 DVR has a bunch of small bugs that looks like I am running some old firmware or something. The bugs are so obvious that any software tester at Motorola/Verizon would see them immediately. Since this DVR box and FIOS have been running for two years in nearby towns... I would assume these bugs would be fixed by now. I'll list just a few of them:

1. Randomly... if I change the channel up or down using the "Channel +/-" button... the LED on the DVR box changes and the the small dialog box opens on the screen to announce the new channel... but the box did not change the channel. If I use the channel button to backup and then go forward the channel does change.

2. Randomly... If I select a recorded show to watch... the DVR will play the selection but ignore all commands to STOP, Go Forward, Go backward or PAUSE. The DVR is locked like a 10-year old PC on Windows 95. Changing the channel or powering the box off and on will free it up.

3. The "DVR Status" screen says that I have 20 hours of standard TV and I have 311,103,405 hours of HD TV. The numbers are approx. The DVR is down stairs. But the box has corrupted the counter for HD hours. There is no way to fix it. The "% of space free space" number seems to be unaffected and approx correct. If I can, I will run the HD recordings to Zero to see if the counter will clear itself.

There are at least 10 other little bugs that are not serious. But it makes me suspect that I have back level firmware. The DVR looks like it's running engineering level code that was loaded on the machine during manufacturing in China 12 months ago and it was sitting on self all this time. I assume others are having these problems.

I can't figure out how to get my current firmware version number. I have gotten into Diag mode and looked through all the menus. The CODE MODULE menu says my BOOT CODE is 08.13 and the PLATFORM version is 21.27 with a build date in January 2009. But I don't see anything like the 1.6.2 that folks are talking about. What am I doing wrong?

You are assuming too much. We have had Fios for a few months now and are running the latest 1.6.2 software. Bugs are fairly common:

1. Yes, we see this randomly as well.

2. Yes, we see this randomly as well.

3. We haven't seen this exact bug, but for example a few times I have seen the DVR report that it is 80% full, so I'll delete a 2 hour HD show and instead of it saying it is 75% full the number actually goes up to 83%. ???

I am at work so I don't recall how to see the software version. I thought it was under one of the Settings menu choices though.

just bumping my earlier question about hooking a Mac to a 7216. Verizon's promos say that you can stream pictures/music from your PC. Can I do this from a Mac?

Also, is there any chance Verizon would deliver a DVR capable of recording from an over-the-air antenna? I'd like to continue to get some of the PBS channels that I now access via an antenna. Thanks!
post #99 of 166
I doubt you can do it with a Mac, and if I'm correct this only works with the Media Manager DVR from a PC.

If you want to record OTA stuff, you'd be better off with a Tivo.

I've got a Mits WD65835 HDTV that gives the exact same green screen when the Fios box is hooked directly to the TV using HDMI. It's a known problem with the FIOS boxes.

Verizon says they are working on a fix, but they've been saying that since 2008.

Does the Motorola box ever have any overscan issues with the analog ports?
post #102 of 166
I'm curious about the end user experience with the Verizon FIOS exchange by mail program. If you have used it, what has your experience been? Has there been any DVR/STB damage? What has been your opinion of the presentation?

I have this box as well. Here is my problem, and I am hoping someone will be able to tell me what the issue is.

I have this box running to my Sony KDS60a3000 via HDMI. Whenever I am watching HDTV about every 15 min or so ( sometimes more sometimes less) the picture will just show some colored snow for about 15 seconds than go back to the show. It does not do this all of the time, and is completly random.

This is a known HDMI interoperability issue with some displays.

It should be addressed by the IMG 1.7 software coming to some markets in September. Other markets will get it in October and November.

Excuse my ignorance, but how does a person get this upgrade, and what does it upgrade, the box or my set? So are you saying their is an issue with the Sony doing this? Please elaborate.

They would update it for you.

Thanks guys, I googled it, and saw what it was all about, however from what I read on the Verizon forums they do not know when it will be out, and some are saying it wont even be in the first quarter as previously thought. I am sad as it is very frustrating. I can get 1080P out of component with my TV, but it makes it so that I cant run it through my receiver and the benefits of it by running component into it instead of HDMI.

I'm getting overscan issues through the component outputs with this box. Anybody else?

Most displays apply overscan to component input. I believe there's also a small amount of overscan with the component output on all Motorola boxes.
post #110 of 166
Is there any way to adjust the box to reduce overscan?

No. Most of the overscan is probably still coming from your TV, however.

Anyone have a solution to significant audio lag? I swear it's over 2 seconds at times. Most of the time it's synched fine, but when it is off, it is unwatchable. Power-cycling the unit did not seem to clear it up, so I'm not sure what does.

Hi guys, I'm having a couple issues with this box and I was hoping you could help out.

1) Sometimes when changing channels (from one HD to another HD channel) the numbers on the front change to the new channel, but the channel itself doesn't change. It just stays on the previous channels. Sometimes I can get around this by retrying it, sometimes I have to flip to a non-HD channel first. Is this a software glitch? I've had the box since April and have only noticed it recently.

2)I'm not sure if this is a DVR issue or a TV issue: Periodically, the picture will flicker, go briefly to salt & pepper, then the picture will come back. Verizon customer support was unable to help, and swapping HDMI cables didn't help either. I can't say if audio is affected b/c I don't run audio through the TV HDMI connection (tv speakers off, using digital out from DVR through home entertainment system).

Thanks

1. Mine does this too sometimes. This Moto STB is buggy so get used to these types of things.

2. This is the same issue that I have had as well as others who have posted in this thread. I'm forced to use component cables until the software fix (also mentioned here) becomes avaialble. I can't wait for this to happen.

I'm trying to switch from HDMI to component output in order to avoid the annoying HDMI handshake issues of the 7216, but I'm not getting any output from the component jacks. Is there a setting in some menu I need to change to switch from HDMI to component output? If so, how do I make the switch?

Thanks!

New to FIOS after ditching glitchy Time Warner Cable. I noticed the 7216 has a 30 second skip (which can be changed to 10 seconds and 5 minutes), and three levels of fast forward (seems to tick forward at 10s/30s/1m roughly). Is there a good strategy for optimally getting through commercial blocks? When I use the 30s skip button, I have to wait a fraction of a second between each button press, or else it won't skip forward properly. On TWC's DVR, I'd crank it to high speed FF and know exactly how far I need to shoot into the program to account for the automatic rollback of a few seconds when coming out of FF.

Other random observations:
Odd that they decided to disable PIP.
Nice that the DVR buffers both the visible channel and the last channel selected. I can pause, flip to LAST, and swap back and forth to watch two channels delayed as opposed to having to actively set a program to record on TWC's DVR.

One of the differences between the QIP7216 and the QIP6416 is that the 7216 supports Dolby 7.1 digital audio (Dolbly Digital Plus). I just purchased a new Denon receiver that supports Dolby Digital Plus. I currently have a 6416, but given the reported problems with the 7216 I don't want to upgrade to a 7216 if there aren't any real differences. Are there any television broadcasts that support Dolby Digital Plus?

No.

The primary benefits of the QIP7216 (for Verizon) include support for MPEG-4 (H.264) and double the memory.

In addition to the differences listed at the start of this thread, looking closer reveals even more enhancements that make me want to call up Verizon and demand a 7216!

7216 improvements over 6416:
* Double the memory (128 -> 256 mb)
* Slightly faster CPU (350 -> 400 MIPS)
* Eats 5w less electricity (35 -> 30 watts)
* Weighs 1 lb less

If this translates into faster OSD navigation I'm all for it! Yes, the latest FIOS update sped things up very nicely, but it could still be improved.
