October fun: 31 days of Horror, Blood, Guts and Gore! (and zombies, too....) - Page 38

Last night's movie:

22. Deadgirl (2008)- {4/5} DVD (First-time viewing) This one starts out with some boring dialog between a couple of unpopular high school kids and quickly turns into a disturbing and entertaining movie that includes great gore, creepy scenes and quite a bit of nudity (even a few scenes that show a pretty humorous.....shall we say......follicle patch.) Shiloh Fernandez stars as Ricky, and to me, he could pass as a Joaquin Phoenix look alike (sans the scar). Noah Segan stars as J.T. and although he was pretty annoying during the first part of the movie, he develops into a thoroughly entertaining psychopath/necrophiliac with some excellent lines as the story spirals completely out of control. My wife and I were very entertained by this movie solely because it is so bizarre with a good blend of horror, suspense and even some well-placed comedy. The ending was also pretty cool as well but we never really do get an explanation of where Deadgirl came from or what she was. Either way, highly recommended as long as you can stomach the disturbing scenes.

Apollo, the first time watching Deadgirl is really a treat. Quite a movie, isnt it?

This is a movie that could have a prequel, showing us what lead up to her being there in the state she was in.

No question about it. A good sequel would be tough IMO, but a prequel is an excellent idea.

Last night's fare:

1408

This one was frustrating, because you can see the promise of what could have been a genuinely spooky movie, but instead simply becomes more and more dull as it goes on - I actually had to take a 15 minute break in the middle and go surf the web in order to prevent myself from falling asleep. Yes, I stopped myself from falling asleep during a horror film by surfing the internet. I couldn't have cared less about the end of the film, because I didn't care about the characters in the film. Although I've not read the Stephen King story, I'm certain the film adaptation was a butchery of it.

I have a lot of catching up to do on this thread! (not on my movies, just this thread).

Kenobi: Awesome pics! I hope you win again.

Airboss: You are missed this year! Thanks for checking in.

wizzack: Those prints look awesome!

23. Teeth (first-time viewing)
This was really more of a dark comedy than horror. A virgin, pro-chastity teenage girl discovers she has teeth in her "downstairs", but before long she has a boyfriend and things get interesting. It slices, it dices! This was funny and different. One complaint: for the first 37 minutes, no horror. But once the blood starts flowing, things get going. I would imagine this movie will make a lot of men cringe and a lot of women laugh. Watch it your significant other and let me know how it goes, my wife just wasn't willing to bite on this one. Okay, maybe that was a poor choice of words...

Home from work early on a Friday afternoon and decided to add another to my list:

Them (Ils)

French horror/suspense thriller that really delivers the goods. Highly recommended for those that enjoy tension over gore. A young couple terrorized at their remote home by unseen assailants. Reminds of 2008's "The Strangers", which I really liked. Remember how I'm a sucker for atmosphere? This one's got it.

Teeth is one of those movies that's so ridiculous that you can't help but like it.

That's reminds me - it's been a while since I've flossed some vagina dentata. You know what they say about proper hygiene.

Wasn't The Strangers a remake of Ils? At any rate Ils was the better of the two as is the case with most foreign horror that the US tries to recreate. Nice addition to the list.

BMaugans, for atmosphere try "In the Company of Wolves."

While it had a lot in common, I doubt it's a remake. The Strangers actually seems to be closer to another foreign film, "Funny Games", but not really a remake of either.

36. Night of the Demons, 2009. A remake of the 1988 version, I liked it. Good story, some funny stuff, some pretty good gore. Overall a great Halloween movie. 3/5

Is Funny Games foreign? I thought Tim Roth and Naomi Watts starred in it. Its actually in the mail right now from BB online.

General Kenobi is correct, "The Strangers" is the 2008 US remake of the 2006 French film "ILS".

The 2007 US film "Funny Games" is a shot-by-shot remake of the 1997 Austrian film of the same title "Funny Games" - both were directed by Michael Haneke.

Rocky Horror Picture Show 8/10

Phenomenal as always. Amazing music. Interesting Genre blend. Very good message. That is all.

25. Grace (first-time viewing)
With "Grace" I have viewed my first total bomb of the month. Nothing works in this movie: it's not scary, the acting is bad, the script is worse, and it's not even particularly sickening for a movie with a gross-out premise. This is basically a B-movie (no, make that a C-movie) that wants you to think it's an edgy independent horror film. There is nothing interesting going on and what little plot there is drags and drags. All the men in this movie are portrayed as incompetent, infantile, manipulable shmucks. I thought a ghoul/zombie baby story had some potential, but this movie is all over the place--it can't decide what it wants to do and it has a muddled agenda--is it a pro-vegan, pro-midwife, anti-man movie? Really it's just a big boring mess of a movie. Save yourself 84 minutes and watch something (anything) else!

Wow, I'm really surprised by that. Like I said, they are similar in plot, but WAY different in the details.

Never saw the US version; there's only one of them in my mind. Sorry for the confusion.

Since there was a full moon last night my wife suggested we watch a werewolf movie. Good thinkin'!

I've been wanting to see In the Company of Wolves but since this was a last second decision we settled for The Wolfman (2010). It should have been great but half of it felt like a jumbled mess. I don't feel like expending energy on coming up with why. I did enjoy the sfx (even though lots of CGI) and was surprised to see Rick Baker did them. When the credits came up and the music started I said "wow this sure does sound like the Batman score". Sure enough Danny Elfman's name popped up. Hey Danny, your stuff is getting tired and weak. You need to change it up! :shakes head:

This morning was redemption with the silent film Der Golem (1920) accompanied with Black Francis' (The Pixies) score. This was a first time viewing and I enjoyed it. The Golem is summoned to protect a Jews but things eventually go wrong and Golem goes Frankenstein on the ghetto.

Watching this made me wonder what was the first "horror movie" ever made?

37. Dead Silence, 2007. I loved this one. Great use of audio. Creepy dolls and curses. One of the best so far. I only regret watching it on AMC, commercials yank you right out of this excellent flick. 5/5

It took till the afternoon, but i got my movie in.

SAW-3 today. The saga continues. This is really good, watching one every day. It makes each movie more interesting, as you stay in Saw-mode mentally, plus you see how the story is told much better than watching it one a year in the theaters or once every few months at home.

Again, i continue to be a sucker for this series, all the stuff, John, Amanda, the traps, etc. Some good traps in this, but some with a no-win situation thanks to Amanda. I want to play a game, man i love that line.

I found this about as good as Saw-2 so i rated it the same, an 8.5 (i changed yesterday my original 8.25 rating on Saw-2 from 8.25 to 8.5, so hard to give ratings at times).

But i love the SAW series!!!!!!!!! It amazes me how many horror fans do NOT like these movies.

My list so far, with ratings on a 1-10 scale:
1 - Grotesque - 9.25
2 - MOH Haeckels Tale - 4.5
3 - MOH Jenifer - 7
4 - MOH Pick Me Up - 5
5 - Murder-Set-Pieces - 7.5
6 - MOH Dance Of The Dead - 3.5
7 - MOH The Screwfly Solution - 4.5
8 - MOH Right To Die - 7.25
9 - Underworld - 9.25
10- The Last House On The Left - 9.25
11- Street Trash - 3
12- MOH Family - 7
13- Hannibal - 9.25
14- Fear Dot Com - 8
15- Pulse - 8
16- Deadgirl - 9
17- The Hitcher - 8
18- Return To House On Haunted Hill - 5
19- Saw - 9.5
20- Saw-2 - 8.5
21- Saw-3 - 8.5

I have never seen Dead Silence. Not familiar with it at all. Gotta check it out, i think i have said that before.

EDIT: I just looked at it on Amazon, and I recognized the cover. Yes, i have seen it, and i was disappointed. I guess i compared it at the time to the Saw series and it didnt quite hit me the same way the Saw movies did. I remember now that i had the dvd, and sold it.

I was in the mood for some humor today, so:

Thankskilling

This is a movie that NEVER takes itself seriously. And that's what saves it from being a dud. A re-awakened turkey goes on a killing spree and five college students on Thanksgiving break are the targets. When the opening shot is a close-up of a woman's breast, you know you're in for a real work of art. And it doesn't disappoint.

3/10 (The rating is meaningless - watch this one with a bunch of friends and family and have a ball).
Bad movies can still be rated high if they are entertaining.

Poultrygeist for example deserves no less than a 7/10, and I'm shocked that I may be on the person who has seen it on this thread. It's out on Blu-ray, and I beg everyone to watch it.

I can understand that if Saw is your thing, as it stands I thought Dead Silence was superior to the Saw movies. I'm one of those horror fans who doesn't like the Saw movies.

You and I seem to have a lot of different taste in horror movies. Thats whats so great about the horror genre, there are so many different type movies out there, there's always stuff for everyone.

Have fun with the rest of this month bud.

26. The Mist (black & white version)
The last time I saw this movie was in the theater, and I enjoyed it just as much last night, perhaps even a little more because I was watching the ultra-cool black and white version of the film. This is one of the best Stephen King adaptations that is actually a horror movie. It's a great monster movie as well, with lots of cool monsters to look at, and it's full of varied and interesting characters. Excellent marriage of practical special effects and CGI, showing it can be done effectively in the right hands. And of course the ending still packs a wallop!
