Thanks for the welcome!

When we watched Tokyo Gore Police, I realized that the lead actress, Eihi Shiina, was the same one as in Audition. Still doing extreme movies almost ten years later.

Fresh meat - welcome! Nice movies too.

Tonight's viewing enjoyment was The Dead. FINALLY a decent zombie flick! A U.S. soldier is trapped in Africa with limited supplies and a sliver of hope. He runs into a local Sergeant who's village was torn apart by zombies (who look great BTW). They journey together across the desert hoping to find the man's son or some sort of refuge. Incredible setting, believable gore, no CGI or jokes. It's almost perfect except something is a little off with the lead character. What a refreshing take on the sub-genre.

The Dead (2010)

Slow zombies return!
Thought trapped in a mall was bad?
No five and dime here.

October 6th:

Yellowbrickroad: 1 star - I guess this really deserves no stars because it is my first ejected title this month. After an hour I just couldn't stand to hear me tell myself "this is so stupid" once more. The trailer looks decent but expect disappointment.

Last night was Poltergeist 2. This year I'm going for more supernatural and since I work for my local government I have gained knowledge of 2 subdivisons that were built on Native American burial grounds way back in the early 1900's.

Cool! New one to me. Pre-ordered BD from Amazon.co.uk. Where'd you get it? I should get it before the end of the month!

Watched "The Hills Have Eyes" remake BD last night. I'm behind. Hopefully I can catch up this weekend.

Don't know if it's region locked or not, if that's an issue.

Now, after looking at the cover of the disc, I seem to recall a trailer for this - desert images and zombies come to mind - but I can't find anything here.

7. The Exorcist. Pretty much a perfect film on all fronts. Every one of the characters are written brilliantly and are meaningful. The scares cover all ranges from subtle to physical terror. The soundtrack and filming resemble perfection. I wasn't as "scared" compared to the first time I watched this alone, but was just as effective. I would place this at "#3" of the best horror films ever made, right behind Alien and The Thing. 10/10.

You've got me wanting to watch this now. Don't think I've ever seen the whole thing. (too scared).

6. Frontier(s) (first-time viewing)
And speaking of dreary torture porn, we have the French to thank for Frontier(s). Not sure why they need the parentheses around the "s", what is it with the French, they did the same with the title "Fear(s) of the Dark"? Anyway, as torture porns go, this one isn't bad, and the weird family in this movie makes the family from Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and House of 1000 Corpses, for that matter) look as wholesome as the Brady Bunch. Problem is, this movie is highly derivative of those better films, even ripping off the dinner table scene where the elderly family member needs assistance to eat the victims. Also, at 108 minutes this is just too long--the whole opening segment about political riots and the hospital trip could have been done away with. Another annoyance is the inability of anyone to successfully shoot anyone, even when firing at nearly point blank range. But if you're looking for a creepy cannibalistic family out in the sticks kind of movie, this one hits all the right buttons, including a tunnel-crawling scene with great claustrophobic effect.

7. The Possession of David O'Reilly (2010)- {3/5} DVD (First-time viewing) There were some things that I enjoyed about this movie and other things that I completely disliked. There were some cool concepts and disturbing images that did a good job of setting the mood; however, there were things missing within the story that made it difficult to understand (and buy into) the concept as a whole. The performances were adequate but the lack of rational decisions by 2 of the 4 characters (yes, there were only 4 characters in the movie) made the movie somewhat annoying to watch. There was a nice little twist at the end, but it was fairly predictable given the events that led up to it. Given that this movie was low-budget, it did a fair job of recreating a tale of a man possessed. I would give it a weak recommendation for those that haven't seen it simply due to the originality of the story.

Now on to the real highlight of the night. After seeing the intriguing ads for the FX show American Horror Story, I made it a point to set the dvr to record it on Wedesday night. We sat down and watched it last night before TPODOR. First thing that comes to mind is...WOW! The pilot was amazing! What we have here is a great story with fabulous acting that is vulgar, sexy and most importantly...creepy as hell!! We absolutely can't wait for next week's episode. Everything was just so refreshing and original. Its surprising what cable networks can get away with these days as this would definitely receive a strong R rating if it were a movie. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised though as most of our other favorite shows (that just happen to be on FX) push the envelope as well. Highly recommended!!

Bob - you hit one of my top ten alltime favorites in Frontiers, man i love that movie. Love the sets, the cast, the story, the gore, this one really hits a great chord with me.

I definetely am going to watch it this month, maybe soon!!!!

I may be starting to slip with my watching a movie a day, this weekend may hurt me, maybe not, i am gonna give it my best, but its hard when you can only watch early in the morning usually. Today i had to go out, now i am not sure if i can watch one today with wifey out of bed and around. I always could sit in the computer room and watch one, but its just not real comfy compared to being on a recliner with a big tv in the den. Oh well, maybe!!!!

Do yourself a favor and watch the Special Edition with all the extra footage. I would rate this # 2 all time, right behind The Shining.

Really enjoyed that one - in fact, it's my costume choice for this year's Halloween party. I tried on the prosthetic last week, just to see how it fit. This weekend we may experiment with it again - this time with full makeup!

I missed yet another night of horror viewing, setting me back a few. We have some double (or triple?) features lined up for this weekend, so I should be back on track soon.

We're heading to Scarowinds tomorrow night with some friends. The local theme park in Charlotte converts itself into a horror-themed event each year at Halloween. This is my first trip to Scarowinds, and I haven't been to the park in 3-4 years, so I'm pretty pumped!

Oct. 6: Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Blu-ray)

This is a favorite and it looks amazing. I never saw the show on stage, but have the original cast recording. I also have the DVD of the concert version with Patti Lupone. I like 'em all.

Johnny Depp can sing. (And not in that "sort of singing" way that Gerard Butler sort of sings in The Phantom of the Opera.)

Helena Bonham Carter has the right look for the picture, but her voice is a bit weak. (It always helps to be shagging the director.)

Love Sweeney Todd!

Johnny Depp and Gerard Butler would never see the light of day at broadway. They are both "horrible" as far as professional singing is concerned.

This is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I was unfamiliar with the story when I first saw the film so went in completely blind. Also a reference bluray title all the way. I was very impressed with Depp's singing as well but my boy Ewan McGregor has him beat I will probably fire this one up this weekend.

Since the movie is just now screening in the US, a US disc release is probably not imminent. If you want to take a road trip, it's playing in Seattle on the 21st.

Altaira, you got a couple of the best there with Imprint and Aliens, both so great, glad you joined us this month.

I see general Kenobi mentioned House Of The 1000 corpses in his list (in the Blu-ray software thread)... Having seen The Devil's Rejects which I liked quite much, how does 1000 Corpses compare to its sequel?

I'll try to have a full horror week this month but it's not gonna be easy (and no centipede!, dammit!), hey at least that's a start!
