October fun: 31 days of Horror, Blood, Guts and Gore! (and zombies, too....) - Page 93

I've got a Sony BD player (BD-S480) and Sony seems to keep trying all kinds of ways of making money with their content. The latest app to show up is the Cult Movie Network. Anyone try it yet? Seems like a good fit for the warped crew here. It's also available online so you don't necessarily need a Sony device to see it.

I took a preliminary "stab" at making a list...as usual, I am sure I will stray from this list as new and cool-sounding titles come up. These are all titles I have not seen (I saw some of "The Curse of Frankenstein" a very long time ago.) What do you guys think? Are any of these movies total stinkers that I should avoid?

1. I Saw the Devil
2. Prince of Darkness
3. Buried
4. Martyrs
5. Silent House
6. The Haunting of Julia
7. Horrors of the Black Museum
8. The Posssession of Joel Delaney
9. Red State
10. The Loved Ones
11. Jennifer
12. The Innkeepers
13. Pieces
14. Black Sheep
15. The Beguiled
16. I Drink Your Blooed
17. Grave Encounters
18. Blind Beast
19. Just Before Dawn
20. The Silent House
21. Santa Sangre
22. Tam Lin
23. The Shrine
24. Séance on a Wet Afternoon
25. Heartless
26. The Curse of Frankenstein
27. Blood and Roses
28. Long Weekend
29. Strangler of the Swamp
30. Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural

“This witty, entertaining remake…remains true to its trashy heart and its smart appeal to elemental fears…this one knows how to bring tired zombies back to life.” —The New York Times

“A terrific and effective Zombies Attack movie.” —BeyondHollywood.com

“It shifts, improves, comments on, and complements the original.” —Tor.com

Night of the Living Dead (1990)—a George Romero-approved remake of his 1968 cult horror classic, directed by makeup wizard Tom Savini—tells once again the chilling tale of seven people holed-up in a farmhouse besieged by armies of the un-dead. As the terrified little group fights for their lives, they begin to find themselves as plagued by the evil lurking within as by the ravening flesh-eaters battering on hastily boarded-up windows and doors. “Splatter King” Savini keeps things moving—and the blood flowing—as the survivors dwindle one by one.

Enjoy the extensive Julie Kirgo liner notes and film art packaged with the Blu-ray disc.

I'll pretend you didn't just compare Twilight to Night of the Living Dead;) I've dropped $50 on imported steelbooks but it's rare.

I can't believe it's so easy to be region free. Seems too easy to pass up # $40. eek.gif

If you can subscribe for just one month @ $2.99 I'm sure you could get your moneys worth. Interesting option.

I'm liking that list. Pieces has become a personal favorite. I've been waiting for someone here to watch Santa Sangre. What a weird movie!

Ran across this list while I was searching for some horror films. It contains 500 films, some are all ready released and some won't be release until later in 2012, 2013 & 2014:

FUTURE AND NEWLY RELEASED HORROR MOVIES
by Dr-Faustus created 8 months ago | last updated - 2 weeks ago
{2012-2015}. A list of horror films, yet unreleased and newly released. Have only included titles with posters or art-work. In random order. Under constant construction. Depending on availability of posters.

Should be able to find some good ones that are out now that you may not have heard of.

$30 for the remake? Not for me, too They'll be copies around for cheaper eventually. Or buy the HDX version on Vudu for $14.
Thanks, Kenobi. Netflix had both the English and Spanish versions of Silent House (the Spanish version is called "The Silent House" on Netflix) and I didn't even notice I had both on my list! So, The Shrine isn't worth a look? I'll trust your judgment.

That's 10 cents a movie if you watch one a day for a month. I may do so because they have some interesting z-movie or "cult" titles. I define z-movies in three types:
1) movies by complete no-talent amateurs that most will turn off after 5 minutes (including myself).
2) movies that look like they were made by people who usually make educational or industrial films and are stiff and artless. They were just hired "to get the job done."
3) movies done by talented amateurs that are quirky and underfunded but still have an interesting story arc that keeps you watching.

+1, I'm not making a list either. Made one last year and didn't follow it.

I was out driving with my wife Friday night in Haddonfield NJ and always forget that's where Debra Hill wrote Halloween. The birthplace of Michael Myers! If I continue down that road it leads to Voorhees NJ and I also live near the Crystal Lake Diner. lol

Good call on HOTD, I love that movie too... I think Pontypool has made my list, def one of my favorite zombie films. You should add The Loved Ones on bluray to your import list, it is a great movie and a near flawless transfer.

Thanks for the Insignia recommendation. Looks as if Ebay has them for $50 so I'll likely be picking one up. With regard to The Loved Ones, I see that there is an American release as well that I added to my Blockbuster queue. I'm assuming you're referring to the import blu-ray when you referred to the video transfer, correct?

Our lists have always been as Captain Barbosa would say "more like guidelines", a rough draft of ideas for 31 days worth of horror films subject to change at will. I think the only part of the list we stick to is our annual favorites and the few new potential big game in the crosshairs.

One of these years I want to get one of those shirts that are simple black with orange lettering "Haddonfield, IL" but a menu from Crystal Lake Diner would rock.

Solid list as usual, been a while since I've seen Silver Bullet, I may have to catch that one.

Stick to the ones that are not refurbished, I'm not sure if it will matter but I can not vouch for the backdated firmware working with a refirb model. And yes, The Loved Ones on blu is a very nice transfer. It has taken forever to come out here and now that it is we get DVD.... lame.

So I checked into it because I thought your were BSing. Haddonfield and Voorhees NJ do, in fact, exist. Didn't look up Crystal Lake Diner, but your track record suggests that I should just trust you. wink.gif That is some crazy stuff, my man. cool.gif

There doesn't appear to be any new units available, even at Best Buy. There are refurb ones on Ebay and Best Buy and there are some used ones on Amazon. I'm hesitating to pull the trigger now. There are obviously other region-free blu-ray players out there, but most are at least double the price. I guess I could just opt for a region-free dvd player................

Does the schedule online go past Oct 19? It didn't where I clicked. However, when you click on the alphabetical list many movies show up as "no more remaining air times or something. So, something is amiss. Also, except when showing their premier TV shows, AMC can be "iffy" wrt PQ, at least on my cable provider, Comcast. They seem to over compress it and it can be "jerky". Some of the movies look good and some I don't recall seeing.

lol The Crystal Lake Diner doesn't make sense. There's no Crystal Lake around us (there's a Newton Lake) so I'm not sure where they got the name. I'm going to save my dinner there for a Friday night next month. cool.gif

@ AMC I guess they're still putting the finishing touches on the programming and site. All I'm really worried about it The Walking Dead! I have two friends that read all of the comics and they both said we are in for a treat once Rick and the group get in the prison. Hoping the show can carry the momentum it had going last season. *fingers crossed*

Speaking of shows, don't forget about American Horror Story which is set to begin its 2nd season in October. My wife and I were big fans last season and I hear that this season looks to be freakier than last. This time around, the story takes place in an asylum and Jessica Lange is back in a completely different role as the extremely abusive asylum administrator/nun. Needless to say, the DVR will be set. cool.gif

Yeah it was entertaining and freaky. I'm glad they are going to a different place with different people being in the same house would have gotten old real quick.
