"Creep Van" and "Doomsday Book" are a couple of films available on NF WI that folks here might like. Don't know if they've been mentioned on this thread before and I'm not doing a search to find out.

^^^

He needs to search and see if those are previously mentioned.

You and yankeeman seem to always find the interesting titles. Creep Van makes me think of this:

Here's my question...how did my old van end up in your part of the country? eek.gif

Okay, Sinister.........

Different strokes, I guess.......

We watched it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Aside from being the darkest movie ever filmed (light-wise), the creep factor was very solid (my wife was totally freaked out) and the soundtrack was top notch. She wants to add it to the library for Horrorfest 2013 and I can't see me putting up much of a fight. A definite thumbs up.

Agreed, although I couldn't get my wife to watch it!

I guess that puts me in the minority with Sinister. I'm glad others are enjoying it, we really need more entertaining horror right now. I think I'll be putting my eggs in the Evil Dead basket for April, nothing else out before then has me too excited.

I did watch PA4 over the weekend... pretty weak. It had some good moments but fewer then the prior films IMO. The young actress as lead was a gamble that in my opinion did not pay off. She was fine for much of the first 40 min or so but when stuff started getting real I just felt like I was watching someone acting scared. It was also disappointing to see the franchise delver yet again so little story and more questions. They really need to come up with some solid substance and cohesive dot connecting.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The one scene where he was being followed by the kid ghosts was pretty awesome, as soon as he sat on the couch and that glow crept up behind him in that window I couldn't tell if he was about to be attacked or what but instead it was dawn. Pretty cool.

The horror films I enjoy out of "Hollywood" are usually independent ones made by filmmakers who work in the industry but occasionally make a low-budget film on the side for themselves. These are usually long on story with no interference from clueless studio bean counters who think they know better than anyone else.

I think I've just seen so many that it takes more now for me to be captivated much less scared by a good horror film. Sinister had some great things going with the found footage and demon aspect, both things that were creepy but never quite made it far enough beyond some of Hollywood's standard format to impress me. It left me with too many questions and not enough scares. The part that darth mentioned stuck me as kinda goofy, what wa the point of it? Different strokes I guess but it doesn't have to be all gore for me, I really enjoy a slow cooker if the story is original, captivating, or even a psychological horror. Once in a while we get gems like Triangle, Pontypool, The Orphanage, The Descent, but guess what... those gems are not born in hollywood. Looking forward to RZ's latest and the Evil Dead remake but I sure would like to see the genre turned on it's head by something totally outside the box.

It stood out, to me, regarding editing and telegraphing the passage of time in that one scene. Goofy yes. Terrible no.

Just made a blind buy of Sinister on Blu when I saw it in the used bin...I'll let you know my thoughts once I watch it, hopefully soon.

I cannot even remember the last time I was really scared by a movie. Certain scenes have stuck with me and serve as cautionary tales that helped mold me.

Watching the first Final Destination was not a smart move the night before my first plane trip.

Watching The Exorcist alone as a child, on CBS so you know it was edited, went a long way to making me behave within a loosely Baptist upbringing.

Nightmare On Elm Street led me into reading about dreams and eventually learning about lucid dreaming which was a great help due to recurring nightmares I had as child. Getting in control of one is really awesome.

Being raised in a rural area we were often told tales of ghosts or various magics by our grandparents, when respecting your elders meant something, we'd listen intently and take it to heart. It's why I prefer a ghost movie over the ultra violence. There was an old lady at the end of town who "talked warts off" and many stories about her still get told. I actually saw her do it to a friend of mine in the grocery store parking lot. It worked.

I like a little mystery and wonder in the world and it's one of the reasons I never watch behind the scenes or making of materials for any movie I like. This keeps my interest in practical effects across all genres.

I think it's safe to say most of us don't get truly scared from a movie anymore but we do get uncomfortable, nervous, tense, or just good ol heebie jeebies. These are the adrenalin inducing sensations we want out of horror right?

The Exorcist will always be a solid performer because it and other effective demonic films deal with something unknown but not entirely unbelievable which is why it is so effective at leaving a mental scar of sorts. Ghost story flicks are similar but both genre's have become so over saturated with regurgitated muck it's lost a bit of its charm.

I've said it before but my favorite brand of horror is the kind that really gets in your head and days later you are still thinking about it. There aren't many that have done that for me but I also like REC and The Descent that make great use of practical effects, darkness, disorientation, and atmosphere.

Sometimes filmmakers can take this quest for horror a bit too far:

According to the stats it looks like spending every day in the ocean for a couple hundred years is still safer than one year in Chicago... talk about scary wink.gif

I watched Sinister last night and I'd give it a B+, although the first half is a pretty solid A. Lots of scary atmospheric build-up and some killer jump moments and an interesting story concept reminiscent of Antonioni's "Blow Up". A few things detracted from the story, namely the uninspired makeup Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The demon guy looked like a reject from KISS or Brandon Lee in The Crow, and the dead kids looked like they had dried mashed potatoes on their faces
and the overwrought arguments between the Ethan Hawke character and his wife, who got on my nerves from the start with her "You know I've always supported you...by the way, if this doesn't work out, I'm taking the kids and leaving." WTF? Still, overall this was a good movie that I'll be watching again...those super 8 film clips alone were worth the price of admission!

Yeah those clips were creepy.

Finding the face in the pool was pretty good. Nice technical direction there.

Ok, this was actually pretty good! The movie consists of found footage from a variety of sources (unexplained how it was recovered) covering the day of the event as well as some footage from the months prior that all stack to tell a pretty damn ominous and chilling story. Although the movie was obviously for entertainment purposes it sure did paint a frightening and accurate picture of our corrupt dysfunctional government. It also raises some new fears about the water that might just be worse than the fears we had after jaws! There was some minor CG used but it was sparingly. Good makeup work and the found footage was effective and refreshingly steady for the most part, so all the shaky cam haters should be ok with this one.

I'd give it 3 1/2 maybe 4 gutrot zombies and def recommend it as being worth a rent.

I agree those 8mm clips do add to the creepiness of the movie.

Occasionally I do jump/react to horror movies but that is the reason why I love this genre of film.

The first movie I can remember seeing (sneaking into the room, my dad was showing off his LD of Alien to his friends) was the Parker/Lambert encounter with the Alien in the movie Alien. I was really young and I was scared out of my mind on what kind of creature would look like that. Plus the thing had no eyes!

Poltergeist is the other movie that really creeps me out because I grew up in a suburb like that in CA. To this day, the movie still works and to me the best horror film that is not rate R.

For new movies that gave me that reaction would be The Descent, Wolf Creek and Audition.

Agreed on all!
BTW - Wolf Creek 2 is in the works, Dread Central has a few pre-production stills and some poster art.
