Catching up! Was extremely stoked to make it to the NJ Zombie Walk yesterday. Yeah it's cheesy but I'm sooooo thankful I didn't have to miss it this year. Best time we've had since the first one and NJ was able to take back the Guinness record with 9592 zombies in attendance. ZOMG!

Gonna post a few more pics later. There were some great costumes you guys would get a kick out of. In the meantime...

Giddy up!

10/4 Zombie Island Massacre (1984)
I had no idea Troma was responsible for this movie until the opening credits so obviously I expected the utmost quality. Man was I right! This stinker was horribly bad but oh so good. Perfect for a MST3K/Rifftrax ripping. I was laughing so loud almost woke the wife. It’s basically Romero’s NOTLD masterpiece but takes place in the Caribbean. But there’s no zombies. And it’s nothing like it. C+

This film contains:
Strong lead Black Male
Dumb white people
Zombies (???)
Booty traps
Boobs: BIG'UNS
Twist

I gave up on Syfy's "Scarecrow" because it lacked "umph". Couldn't get a decent stream out of Netflix so went to Crackle and watched "Brotherhood of Satan" a 1971 film with Strother Martin. I'd rate it two and a half witches. It was a good visit to simpler times that "some" of us remember. wink.gif

I have NO trouble getting a 720p stream out of Crackle probably because they're using YouTube now even for stream to my Sony BD player. Sony has definitely improved Crackle than what it was a year ago and have even have some good originals like "Cleaners". It's ad supported but with usually only one 15 or 30 second ad per break which is tolerable.

I need to watch some SyFy horror movies when I get a chance, and whatever happened to AMC showing 31 days of horror?

The haven't done that for a couple years now. For whatever reason it has been toned down to 13 days of horror or something. Still nice but 31 is better.

Here is the finished product in the front room:

Too bad its so slow moving as its such a beautiful movie to look at, this could have been great. As it is, i will rate it a 2.75.

OCTOBER 2013 MOVIES WATCHED (1-5 Zombie ratings):
01) TORTURE ROOM - 2 brainwashed Zombies
02) DEAD SNOW - 3.5 semi-intelligent Nazi Zombies
03) THE DEMENTED - 1 germ-infected Zombie
04) LIFEFORCE - 2.5 naked space Zombies
05) ZOMBIE ARMAGEDDON - 2.75 atomic Zombies
06) THE DEAD - 2.75 scenic african Zombies

I think you're spot-on, Yankeeman. I saw this last year and I recall thinking the same thing. Nice concept but the execution could have been tighter.

Competitive Yarding. The standard Autumn/Halloweeen load out in our neighborhood is usually one pumpkin by the mailbox. My wife "wins" the holidays. It's nothing like some of you guys do but with the kid we plan on doing more. I like doing it to stick it to the HOA. They hate pink flamingoes and I bought five last year.

Yep, AMC has been rolling out some solid shows these days so I suppose classic horror has taken a back seat.

Yesterday's flicks........

6. Dead Silence (2007)- {3.25/5} HBO (First-time viewing) This one is a James Wan flick about a man (Jason from True Blood) who returns to his home town to investigate the history of a ventriloquist doll that may or may not have been involved in the death of his wife. The story sounds pretty foolish and I've avoided this movie since it came out because of that (was never a fan of the Chucky series). Well, HBO had it on recently, so I thought WTH....When it was all said and done though, I actually enjoyed this one. I bought into the concept early on and settled in for some good fun. There are some sweet kills and sound effects not to mention the dolls were pretty damn creepy as well. Overall, a fairly cool movie that I would not hesitate to recommend if you're hurting for options.

7. Murder Set Pieces (2004)- {1.5/5} DVD (First-time viewing) Movies marketed as being "shocking, horrifying, controversial" will catch my eye if I'm browsing around, looking for something to watch. So, I figure... why not give it a shot. There are spots in my list for the good and the bad........I mean, that's the nature of trying to find 31 horror flicks to watch every October. Unfortunately, this one was such a sh*tfest from the jump that I considered putting in something else and not even counting it. I'm ashamed to say that I did hang with it though, in hopes of some sort of payoff. That was a mistake. A lot of blood and nudity can't make up for atrocious acting, poor dialog and some of the worst editing I've ever seen.
I watched Tucker and Dale vs. Evil yesterday. Not bad. 2.5/5 I did laugh out loud when Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the kid jumped into the chipper and Tucker tried to save him. When the chipper stopped after gnawing on the kid, Tucker asks "You ok?"
Hahahahahahaha! smile.gif

10, The Ninth Gate, 1999 Roman Polanski Syfy/HDnet Dvr. I started to watch this last night on Syfy and realized I actually had this movie on my DVR. I haven't seen this film since it came out in the theaters way back in 1999. This film is more of a suspense/thriller with some horror elements thrown into the mix. Johnny Depp plays a rare book dealer/detective, hired by a rich business man to find other copies of a book (whom the business man owns) that supposedly raises Satan on earth. Johnny Depp runs into trouble with busty women, Satan worshipers and his female companion isn't all who she says she is. This would be a decent movie for those that have S/O that cannot handle a ton of blood/gore, but like Johnny Depp.

12. Baby Blues. Postpartum depression drives a mother over the edge and forces her son into survival mode. Truly nightmarish in premise but lacking in execution this movie seemed like a straight to video release of a Lifetime movie. I was hoping for more and was let down as I saw this on several lists for "horror movies you missed." The mom does the unthinkable but they don't show you the deeds and I was ok with that. It's borderline good but not quite. 2 stars

Damn shame what they did to that dog.

Syfy occasionally has a good original. AMC is having a "Walking Dead" fest this week but showing about one "horror" movie a day or what they think is "horror." Thing is I'm interested in seeing horror I haven't seen before and I also like classics too.

My eight year old loved that movie and is a great age to wow the friends in a basement ht.

Here is my horror activity over the weekend.

4- Shaun of the Dead – 2004. Normally, I don’t prefer comedy as the main theme in a horror movie but this was done just right. Eventhough the violence was done for comedic effect, it was still good violence and had some feel of personal peril. I am a little sick of Simon Pegg now, but here he is really funny and sincere. Bass runs really hot in this and adds a powerful kick to the presentation. 4 British Zombies

5-SPECIES II – 1998. I guess I had seen this sometime before and all I vaguely remembered it was lame. My standards must have really dropped because this was a lot of fun, lol. Marg Helgenburger, M Madsen, James Cromwell and of course Natasha. For a dumb creature feature, it had pretty good AV and was a fun watch. 3.5 procreating Zombies

6-HALLOWEEN Rob Zombie style – 2007- FTV. A little ambivalent going into this one but the first half was an interesting POV for the origin of MM. Obviously, Halloween is one movie that does not need a reboot, but I liked RZ’s attempt to at least add a little something to the re-imagining of it. The movie starts to lose steam for me at the mental institute. Malcom Mcdowell’s Loomis keeps saying how MM is obviously evil etc etc but it is NEVER shown? MM just kind of sits there. The first halloween it is a big part of the intensity how scared Loomis is because he has SEEN how evil MM is through the 15 years of observation. I always wondered what did he see? How could he tell this guy is soo evil? Here they showed the psyche sessions but nothing to really give you a peek at how different he is - WTF? IMO, a big opportunity lost. The Lorrie character was pretty vanilla and not presented as well as the original and another big opportunity squandered. Still, some nice action, production values and always good to see Ken Foree and Danny Trejo. Plus RZ seems to have a nice style or feel to his flicks - even if it is lacking substance or execution. 3 knife wielding Zombies

Next movie watched: HELLBOUND - HELLRAISER II - first time watch.

It was about what i expected. Good, but not great for my taste. Wierd, and the effects were not always my type of effects, but overall a decent movie with good concepts carried thru okay. I would give it a 3 rating, which for me this year is damn good!!!

Oh, here's a funny thing - my wife with the horror-o-phobia, we were watching a Reno 911 show today and in one scene a cat fell from a roof into the spinning fan of an air conditioning unit and the cat disappeared and massive blood spattered all over the house. My wife laughed hysterically, and then turned to me and said "Look what you did to me, you made me sick now!!!". Ha ha ha, but she still wont watch a movie with me!!

Hellraiser is unfortunately a movie that has not aged well so unless it has nostalgic value for you it may not stand well. I can pretty much watch Hellraiser II: Hellbound and Hellraiser IV: Bloodline and have all I need to know for that story. Bloodline has some cheese and bad acting but lends a cool historical perspective on the box and it's origins.

So last nightwe had the kids in bed by 7:30... queue the double feature!

October 6th:

The Orphanage - 3.5 Spanish speaking orphan zombies
As an overall film I would rate this higher but as we see more and more haunting movies and more creepy kid movies some of the magic is lost on repeat viewing of this film. The atmosphere and intrigue were brilliantly crafted for this film however it does seem light on the scares once it gets rolling with more of a find the clues, solve the mystery thrust. I still really enjoyed it but not sure it is sufficient for "31 days of horror". 3.5 Spanish speaking orphan zombies

Inbred - 3.5 neck stump zombies
Maybe my mood was just off last night but this is another one that has dropped a tad for me in the enjoyability factor. Still a fun movie with some real sick SOB's but again looses some umph on repeat viewings. I'm still glad to have a copy and have not seen a US bluray available yet. 3.5 neck stump zombies

I feel the need for some higher scoring movies here so I may have to grab something I usually save for towards the end of the month and boost my spirit wink.gif

I have had Doghouse and Phase 7 on deck since Friday.
However, I've been battling "Walter" all weekend and haven't been able to get to 'em.

Additionally, last night there was a local power outage all evening and my HT was put out of commission....
The bad news is I couldn't get to these 2 movies.
The good news is my favorite brewpub was serving warming beer at 1/2 price by candlelight.wink.gif
