October fun: 31 days of Horror, Blood, Guts and Gore! (and zombies, too....) - Page 272

Love the awards and stats, Cabo. This year is the first year I rated my views, usually I avoid that because my impressions of movies are changing all the time. Sometimes a movie will stick with me long after viewing it but other times a great view won't hold up the 2nd time around.

Thats so true Bob. I find for me its usually the opposite though. So many times I do a first watch of a movie with such high expectations that the movie cant reach them and I think its not a good movie. When I watch it again with low expectations, I realize its really damn good. I cant tell you how many times that has happened to me.

I will admit about the ratings, which I always do, I kinda feel pressured at times on the ratings (which is stupid i know). Pressure such as if i like a movie that most dont like, i worry about giving it a too high rating, and vice versa, when i watch a movie that most love but i dont care for it that much, i worry about giving it a low rating!! Yes, i AM a nut.

As we inch towards the "holiday" season I want you all to think of this picture every time you hear Ella, Dean, Bing, or any other classics singing this song wink.gif

There is no such thing as being right or wrong in our ratings and that's part of the fun.wink.gif

Considering some of the recent postings, she(?) would fit right in.

After seeing it twice though, I have only one complaint about the film, see the spoiler: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
For about 2/3 of the film, we don't really know what this demonic force is about, but then come the crosses, the holy water and the bible stuff. I think, but rest assured I'm only speaking for myself here, I think it kind of diminishes the impact of the whole thing, and it got me wondering, what if this family were muslim or buddhist in the first place? How can they deal with a problem like this? At some point Patrick Wilson's character tells the father that "he might want to rethink" his position regarding the Church, God and all that…As if one has to aknowledge its existence and take it for a fact. rolleyes.gif This type of religious bias really annoys me, to put it simply, and frankly. What I like in a movie like Evil Dead is that "god" or any other catholic or christian reference is never made throughout the movie. It's just an ancient evil force, but it's not God vs. Satan, where good (i.e. God) must prevail no matter what. It's only a pure badass demonic force, spirit or whatever we want to call it, and people, or at least the lead actress, has to fight to survive. I don't want to come across as an anti-this or anti-that, and I respect everyone's position, but I'm not religious, at all, and the whole notion of exorcism to me, doesn't mean much, in fact it ends up weakening the entire storyline. The story would have been more "universal", so to speak, and would have been even more powerful, without the religious aspect.

Having said that… I can appreciate a film for its qualities and I can certainly look at it in an "objective" way. And the Conjuring is among the best films I've seen this year. Perfect tension, acting and directing. Truly a genuine good film that doesn't rely on cheap scares.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
It comes with the territory, i also wish they wouldn't bring that up as an atheist who is open to the idea of ghosts. I think this should be used as angle in future horror movies, what if there was nothing to turn to for help with paranormal activity??
There were things I would have done differently, yes it was a bit predictable, I guess it's time to make my own horror movies if these aint cuttn it biggrin.gif

Agreed with both of you, and part of the fun, for me anyways.

Sad, but true.
I love The Predator....the most intimidating monster ever created IMO.
But he isn't exactly original.

I said somewhere regarding this that it would be cool to see the Warrens go fight a non western spirit. One that never heard of The Jesus, no offense to the faithful. It could prove a powerful testimony to the "one true God" they tout or a real short movie.

Especially zombie movies which are NAR. wink.gif

Regarding ratings, I've always disliked Netflix's full star ratings. I might like a film just enough to say "I watched it" which is 2.5 star but not "I liked it" which 3 stars and "didn't like it" which is 2 stars. Of course those ratings are for them giving you recommendations. But many films they recommend I've already seen elsewhere.

True but it's simple and easy to visualize. I have found some 2 stars movies that I liked enough to give 4 however.

I can see that angle in Scary Movie 8 or something. Would be funny though. smile.gif

I was pretty shocked that Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Rick let Carol go like that with no drama. I wonder if she will find the Gov'ner?

I also heard that George Romero was offered to direct an episode but turned it down. That would've been pretty cool if he took the job.

I watch TWD but it's going on the "let stack on the DVR" list soon, I feel.

If true, it shows the showrunners don't know sh!t about Romero and his zombies.wink.gif

Also shows movies are better for Zombies. Rather get a kick ass two hours than weekly doses of it.

My usual problem with no time and wifey around, yes she cant even be in the room for something mild like this!! So i now have i think 4 episodes of Walking Dead (3 or 4, whatever there has been this season) on the DVR, and the same goes for American Horror Story, i also have all the new episodes of that on the DVR, i think 4. I gotta get a second DVR in the other room. These are just gonna build up, i will watch them eventually.

If you do that you end up with World War Z, TWD serial, and zombie mode in Call of Duty. Pretty much the end of Z. We need more ROTLD.

I have WWZ and regularly watch The Walking Dead, but I'm not a gamer.

Programming note:
The Descent is on IFC tonight at 6:00 PM (eastern). Maybe I'll finally get to see this movie instead of just hear it.
