October fun: 31 days of Horror, Blood, Guts and Gore! (and zombies, too....) - Page 30

Ha, this forum is mild. You should see what they post on Bloody-Disgusting forum. I bet some of you might be over there secretly. I am, but not secretively, i admit i am a nutjob.

Let me clarify, I do not like it. LHOTL is disturbing and I don't even have children, I merely threw a flick out for those who do. Some of those old 70's flicks are pretty graphic IMHO. I guess that leads to the torture pr0n genre, which is fine. I'm glad most of the posters understood what I posted in the context of the running commentary. That said I have no new flicks to add because I fell asleep and got my 14 hour nap in.

Off topic but if you pick up COD Black Ops next month shoot me a friend request and we'll hook up.

Up for tonight is Frozen, looking forward to it!

I have Pig Hunt queued up - is that one of the new ones? Hopefully it's better than Razorback.

Yes, that's one of them. Two others are GRIMM LOVE and DARK HOUSE. Can't remember the other titles. (There's also another movie recently released called SQUEAL...what IS it about pigs these days????)i

23. The Monster Squad, 1987. Absolute perfection. Pacing, comedy, and monsters. Equal to the Goonies. You can even see the strings on the bats. 5/5

Yes, I teared up with Frankenstein.

General Kenobi, that "nap" is a rarity, as soon as I hit the couch I was out and didn't fight it.

As for COD, I will send you a request, been working on Reach until this horror movie thing.
I've been working on reach of and one, love the campaign but the MP is not as fun for me.

So tonight I finally broke my last couple bad movie streak.
Frozen - Rating 4/5. After you get past the stupid victims that don't have a shred of survival knowledge or even caught an episode of Bear Grylls it really delivers on the tension and suspense. Highly recommended! My wife and I really enjoyed it and I'd recommend it to anyone here. Just keep in mind that it has a couple red moments but it is more a suspense thriller and not a gorefest.

1. Return of the Living Dead 1985 - Rating 3/5.
2. Man Bites Dog - Rating 3/5
3. An American Werewolf in London - Rating 5/5
4. Hostel - Rating 4/5
5. Amityville Horror (2005) - Rating 3/5
6. In The Company of Wolves - Rating 4/5
7. Se7en - Rating 5/5.
8. Splice - Rating 1/5
9. Nightmare on Elm St. (2010) - Rating 2/5
10. The Midnight Meat Train - Rating 4/5.
11. The Exorcist (1973) - Rating 5/5
12. Dark Water (2002) - Rating 1/5
13. Frozen - Rating 4/5

Watched a couple more over the past two days:

Carriers

Why have I not heard more about this movie? I thought it was well done all around - great story, acting, tension and some very emotional scenes, which is always a surprise in a horror movie. I realized that for me, movies about an apocalyptic plague are some of the most frightening, simply because THAT CAN REALLY HAPPEN. One of my fondest memories of childhood was reading "The Andromeda Strain" and then watching the movie on TV with my mother. I think zombie movies are enjoyable because they are an off-shoot of the same idea.

8/10 (I was going to give it a 7, but then added an extra point for Piper Perabo and Emily VanCamp and their fine selves.)

Next up was

Blood: The Last Vampire

This movie started out with lots of promise, but ultimately failed to deliver completely. I loved the interplay between the soldiers and the fake "CIA"/handlers. The CGI blood effects began to get annoying after a while (they were way too purple and not red enough) and the main CGI demon was just bad. Worth a watch, but probably not worth repeated viewings. Maybe the original anime is better.

6/10

13. The Manitou (first-time viewing)
Tony Curtis plays a fake psychic whose ex-wife has a tumor that grows into the reincarnation of an Indian medicine man who looks like a midget version of Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. We find out more from Burgess Meredith who looks like Colonel Sanders. This all results in a big showdown at a high-rise hospital, complete with projected images of a man in a rubber lizard suit who is supposed to be a god, a randomly topless woman who shoots fireballs out of the palms of her hands, and Satan himself (but he really just looks like a cow's heart with eyeballs). Some movies are so bad they're good, but this is not one of them. The actors are dead serious the whole time, save a few lame quips from Tony Curtis. I think this was really trying to be a good movie, so it's kind of funny and sad at the same time.

I saw Carriers a while back, I dug it. A different take on the post apocalypse genre, not a cheerful one.

24. Wicked Little Things, 2006. Kinda dry, it starts strong but then fizzles. Good ideas but you've seen it before done better. 1/5

I think I need at least 40 days of horror just to check out a lot of these movies you guys are posting about. The reviews and lists are great.

Last night was my best yet:

The Wizard of Gore (1970) DVD

I've been meaning to watch this for a long time but never got around to it. Everything about this movie is so horribly bad, yet it's so damn good. In Juno Jason Bateman and Ellen Page have an Argento vs. HG Lewis discussion that leads to a viewing of this movie. Juno ends up loving it and gives the "Godfather of Gore" his props. The acting and sets are worse than anything I've seen in a student film. The gore is fresh, wet and extra sloppy. The story is fun and Montag the Magician is highly entertaining with his commanding stage presence. This fine film wraps up with an ending that blew my mind in a way that only Inception could top [pun] this year. Definitely my favorite of 2010 so far. A

This is disappointing. Never saw it but had high hopes it was a good "bad" movie. Thanks for the heads up.

I need to add, The Monster Squad bluray has some really great extras. Some of the deleted scenes would have been great. There is one

where the leader of the squad sneaks into his dad's room and changes regular bullets for lead ones.
Another set of deleted scenes includes

TV reports that explain a lot of how all the monsters come together, for example the 3 missing girls who become Dracula's brides.

Really a great film. It's full of great little things the whole way. The only place it loses points is the ending credits theme. It can go die.

Well i managed to watch 2 today. However, i consider them both to be comedy/horrors, and that genre is really not my cup of tea.

First was STREET TRASH. This was made in the 80's and looks like an older campy B movie. The first 1/3 actually was fun, with humor and some nice scenes of people disolving into bright-colored slop, but the last 2/3 just degenerated into crap, i really hated the last 2/3 of this movie. Very little horror, not enough humor, didnt care for it. I only rated it as high as a 3 due to the good first third of the movie. I dont know why i held onto this dvd.

Second was Masters of Horror FAMILY. This was much better than Street Trash. For anyone who likes comedy/horror, this is great. For me, it was interesting and okay. I like more horror in my horror movies. It did however hold my interest with good concepts, clever dialogue, and a superb ending. I only rated it a 7 due to wanting more horror, but i think a lot of you here would rate it higher. Definetely worth watching.

My list so far, with ratings on a 1-10 scale:
1 - Grotesque - 9+
2 - MOH Haeckels Tale - 5
3 - MOH Jenifer - 7
4 - MOH Pick Me Up - 5
5 - Murder-Set-Pieces - 7+
6 - MOH Dance Of The Dead - 4
7 - MOH The Screwfly Solution - 5
8 - MOH Right To Die - 7
9 - Underworld - 9++
10-The Last House On The Left - 9++
11-Street Trash - 3
12-MOH Family - 7

Last night:

11. The Wolfman (2010)- {3.5/5} Blu-Ray Since we were on the subject, I decided to pop in Wolfman for a 2nd go 'round. Firstly, this movie has great sound throughout and a pristine picture (but only some of the time). Some scenes were breathtaking and others were soft and unnatural. As far as the film itself, it was slightly better this time around. The actors do a good job with what they are given to work with. We thought it was strange how Del Toro's character was completely disinterested when he originally found out about his brother's disappearance yet he became committed to the bitter end shortly thereafter. Maybe it was Blunt's character that piqued his interest....who knows. Either way, Hugo Weaving as the inspector did a great job and many of the kills throughout the movie were very entertaining. The last showdown betwee Del Toro and Hopkins was severely disappointing however. I couldn't help but notice the parallels between this movie and An American Werewolf in London considering that I had just watched it a few days prior. In the end, this movie is okay and is worth checking out but like I wrote in an earlier post, it was not worthy of a purchase. I guess I was just expecting so much more than what it turned out to be.

That's because the master Rick Baker worked his magic in both, AWIL was just a much better movie IMO.

Yeah, I thought I heard something about that when it hit theaters.

I think it was Yankeeman who said it earlier that he doesn't really do well with comedy mixed in with horror movies. I feel the same way. I want my horror to be scary. This is perhaps the reason for why AWIL didn't completely do it for me. Maybe a joke here or there to make character interactions seem more natural, but other than that, I want to feel uneasy and I want the characters to act genuinely scared. There's no real place for a joke when your family is being slaughtered Just my .02.

Ha that's hilarious how can you not love that cheesy as hell 80's rap! This is another one of my childhood favorites I can't wait for them to remake

I totally understand. AWIL holds a special place in my heart because my dad in all his wisdom took me to see it in theaters when I was 6. I saw nothing funny about it at that age and had nightmares for months! Werewolves on all fours seem more animal to me and there has not been a scarier looking wolf to date IMO. The scene where it circles them, where Jack gets shredded, the end chaos in the streets, all of those were just brilliant and for me have yet to be rivaled in a werewolf movie.

That said I did enjoy the The Wolfman but felt it was very short of what it could have been.

Yes, it was me. Once in awhile a little comedy added is a nice touch, but these movies that are half comedy just are not horror movies to me.

Now nudity is fine.......

14. La Horde (The Horde) - Rating 2/5. Pretty weak considering the quality of horro we've come to expect from the French. Typical dumb survivors that spend all their ammo on center mass shots, haven't they ever seen a zombie movie before? Plenty of better zombie flicks and plenty better French horror so don't go out of your way for this one.

25. The Burning, 1981. Summer camp prank gone wrong. I think this is a template for a lot of 80's slasher movies. Great genre entry. 2/5
26. Bram Stoker's Dracula, 1992. Visually excellent and well acted, re-telling of the old story. How did Twilight even come from this source? 4/5

14. I Sell The Dead (first-time viewing)
This was a nice change of pace: a graverobber condemned to die tells his lifetime of stories to a priest. The mood is light and humorous throughout, but overall the movie is a bit weak. Most would call this a horror-comedy, although there are funnier and more horrific movies to be had. It's very talky, I don't know if there's a moment in the movie where people aren't talking. And the structure is very episodic, it's really a string of small stories that couldn't support a movie-length plot. Despite these weaknesses I liked this movie because it was something different and fun.

15. Pet Sematary
I remember seeing this movie in the theater over 20 years ago and it went over very well with the crowd. The movie still holds up as a nice nuts & bolts horror movie which pushes all the right buttons. There are one too many jump scares involving the cat being thrown at the actors, and Dale Midkiff seems to be channeling a comatose Harry Hamlin, but Fred Gwynne (Herman Munster) is awesome, and Gage and Zelda are still creepy. Sometimes the movie's tone veers towards silly but overall this is a good scary horror story.
