Which 720 or 1080 PJ has best blacks and best detail in dark areas

I've been viewing with DLP PJs since July 2003. I currently use the Optoma HD70. We've had it for a couple of years and love it. Before that I had an Infocus X1. However - I want better blacks and better detail in the dark areas of the projected image.

I am using a pulldown white screen and may change to a better gray one someday. Our room is 100% light controllable.

I hear about the Optoma HD65 and the Planer PD7060.
  • Is there a DLP (or even LCD) PJ that can do a really good job with blacks?
  • Or is the idea of projecting black always going to be dark gray?
  • Must I consider CRT PJs as the only way to do large screen well-projected blacks?

Thanks for any input.

First off, why would you want to go to a grey screen? Unless your projector has a horrible BL, I would stick with a white screen, especially seeing as you have a light controlled room.

There are many pj's out there right now that do a great job with blacks, at a reasonable price. I haven't had the opportunity to demo $10,000+ projectors but the one's I have seen have done an excellent job with black level detail (RS1,RS2,1080UB, etc.) Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there is a projector out there that will do a true black, as none of them are able to completely shut down the light path. They are all projecting a very dark gray.

If you love your Optoma I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the current lineup, and even more so with the new crop on the horizon (RS20, 7500UB).

I am not happy with the BL which is why gray would be better, IMO.

I do like my Optoma. But love? Love is tough. I'm not sure I'll find a DLP/LCD whose BL I love. But I did love my X1 for almost 4 years and the Optoma has been better in every way for the last 2 years.

I'm just trying to figure out what real-world expectations I can have from DLP/LCDs. I would like better BLs. You said that "There are many pj's out there right now that do a great job with blacks, at a reasonable price." Could you name a few?

Thanks - I look forward to the new crop you mention.

I did.

Indeed you did.

I always say I love my Optoma (except when I say I like it). I hate its BL. Love is tough.

Apologies for my inattention.

Thanks

I guess I can assume that all DLP/LCD PJs have weak black levels. Perhaps some a little better than others but it is the Achilles' heel of the technology.
