Umm, that wasnt a rant (ok a little one) but more of a question.

You might find more info in the PDVD Ultra thread, but when I used 7.3, surround was norm.

Check your settings in PDVD/Soundcard/AVR.

Well, I'll try again. But I get DD/DTA with regular dvds through the same drive. But just 2 channel with BR.

Check your settings (audio) during the movie.

The "freeware" version of PowerDVD 7.3 is "crippled" to 2-channel audio in BluRay playback. Others on here might have a fully registered (i.e. additional $'s) version that is giving them the full audio. Yep, kinda sucks doesn't it. I'm not an expert on this aspect of this yet but do know that there are a lot of alternative players. Search on these forums to find more details.

You can get dd 5.1 over spdif but not analog.

I too have the OEM version of PDVD 7.3 from my Sony BD drive purchase. I thought the same thing until I did the following:

1. I updated the PDVD software. It was a large update ~70 MB and it changed some of the audio settings. You can access the update by going to system settings and I think choosing the upgrade feature. There's an option to upgrade to PDVD8 (costs $) or download a critical update for your software (free)

2. In the configuration menu, under the Audio tab, I chose the SPDIF output and the option to play the direct audio stream (no downmixing)

3. When I put in a BD movie, I make sure that I go to the audio configuration menu and select the appropriate 5.1 digital output stream. I think most movies have this option, though some may not.

I think the main problem is PDVD7 doesn't have the option to output 5.1 analog for BD movies, nor does it downsample 7.1 streams to 5.1. Hopefully the above will work for you, but note that I'm not at my HTPC, so I'm guessing at what the options are actually called. Also, if the movie doesn't offer a 5.1 digital soundtrack then you may be out of luck.

Hope this helps.

Good post. I too ran the "FREE critical update" rather than paying any additional $'s and my intent is to run ONLY the S/PDIF audio (as I have a receiver that can take this and run either 5.1 or 7.1 from the signal). I had heard that others got the 5.1 channels this way but I can't test it right now as I am in the process of ordering one of the newer, sharper-looking HTPC cases and therefore my components are currently sitting on the shelve until I get the new PS/Case.

With 7.3 you get the same DD/DTS you would with an Xbox 360 over optical. If your sound card has DTS Connect, it will make a big difference.
