need a dummies explanation of porch, sync, width for resolution settings

Thread Starter
I'm new to setting up custom resolutions from scratch using tools like powerstrip. I underatdn the horizontal and vertical active figures, the vertical scan rate, interelaced vs progressive, and the total dot clock. But I have no idea what back porch, front porch and sync width are for.

Can someone please explain these in laymens terms.

Thanks

www dot linuxjournal dot com slash article slash 1089

(Forgive form above, I'm a new member and can't post web addresses until I have done three posts)

As I remember, some video generators also included "serrations", which were auxiliary sync pulses within a line.
