I was going to say something similar... this may be the only movie that I would prefer in SD... not sure I really want any more detail.

But then, I'm not really a horror or gore fan... like this one more for the sci-fi setting, sets, and costumes. Wish it was a bit less scary and gory.

Tony Scott is a hack. I don't care if he did score one with Top Gun. If Einstein were alive he would provide objective proof of this with a Hackinsian formula with "Tony Scott" at the end of the equal sign.

Just...you know...my 2 cents....

I kind of agree with your comments but he did make three superb movies - True Romance, Crimson Tide and Spy Game and two movies which were almost superb but for the endings with Man On Fire and Enemy Of The State....He has done a lot of hack stuff though as well and The Hunger and Top Gun and Domino were all style over substance.

Looking forward to Event Horizon and Ghost on Blu Ray.

He's scored more than "one". Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, The Last Boy Scout, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, Man on Fire....

And, while it didn't do much business, True Romance is amazing.

Just because you don't prefer his style doesn't automatically make him a "hack".

And having Days of Thunder not only be on Blu-Ray, but finally being anamorphic.... 12/30 can't come soon enough.

They can keep Event Horizon (I don't even like typing it). I blind bought the laserdisc, then gave it away the next day. I've never been freightned by a movie like I was that one.

You blind bought a laserdisc? Weren't those things insanely expensive?

EVENT HORIZON's old 1080i transfer, which aired on HBO long ago (in the day of 19mb/ps bit rates) was astonishing. Better than most HD today. Hopefully the newer transfer is at least as good. Newer does not = better.

My fingers are crossed on this one because despite the flaws, EH is a terrific horror/sci-fi film and Paul Anderson's only good film.

It got good a/v reviews, what else was I supposed to do?

No arguements there. It was just a little too creepy for my tastes.

Truman Show is an instant buy for me, I love that movie. Not so sure about Event Horizon, that movie was just so-so.

Event Horizon and The Truman Show for me!

Dam, I had to check out Tony Scott's resume after the hack comments. I must love hacks as I really enjoyed at least six of his movies.

Wow you obviosly haven't seen Man on Fire one of the best movies in the last 10 years, True Romance another classic as is Crimson Tide. So Hack he is not!

Maybe Uwe Bolle is more his taste :0

You know I wanted to like EH so much but in the end I just got bored with it. It's creepy and sci-fi so that should be a winning combination. Still the movie was just a bit too sluggish. Good to see Paramount cranking out some catalog titles though. Now if they could get Collateral out I'd be a happy camper.

Agreed. True Romance is my favorite Tarantino film. I'll bet if Quentin had directed it wouldn't have been nearly as good.

Only the boxsets really were. I've paid more for most BR discs at $29 and $34 than I did for most laserdiscs.

Saturday Night Fever was supposed to come out last year but was canceled. I was not happy when it was pulled.

BTW, where is Team America: World Police? It was in the first promos in 2006.

I still remember my first blind-buy Laser Disc. It was Lethal Weapon 2 for US$30 in 1990 dollars. Very much worth the price at the time. It looked fantastic on a Sony XBR Pro monitor.

I will definitely buy Days Of Thunder on Blu-ray. It looked pretty good in HD a few years back when I made an HD data-disc copy from a satellite channel. That movie does indeed have some nice surround-sound scenes.

Regarding Event Horizon.... this quote pulled from IMDB:

In the meantime Anderson directed Event Horizon (1997) from a script by Philip Eisner, which featured Anderson regulars Sean Pertwee and Jason Isaacs. The science fiction/horror film, a gothic horror version of Solyaris (1972), was stylish and scary, but was critically panned and did not do well in the box office, which Anderson blamed on studio-enforced cuts to the story. (Anderson has promised a Director's Cut, though none has been announced as of yet.)

We can hope!

I wouldn't count on it. It's been re-released several times already and if it was something they could easily do or something Anderson still had real interest in, it would have been done already to wring out a few more triple-dip sales.

There will be no directors cut....The last 2 disc special edition put paid to all those rumours and Anderson talks at length on the subject matter.

You're right. I still have a copy of this that I transferred from DVHS to a BD-R. I'll be happy if the BD simply matches it; anything better will just be fantastic.

Yes!!!!!

Event Horizon has been my number one most desired title to have on HD for quite a while now.

I just really, really, really hope that the transfer does it justice and isn't DNR'd to hell. Event Horizon really is a fantastic looking movie and to have anything less than a five star transfer would be a massive let-down.

The special edition DVD looks great, so I suspect that even if they recycle that master, we'll be OK, provided they don't DNR it to hell during encoding.
