Insight to VBI and other warts

Last night the CSI Miami transmission was wacked out. I've also noticed strangeness on other CBS shows lately. I was watching ANALOG via APT (didn't want to bother plugging in the box) but was seeing VBI all the time and pillar box or postage stamp during commercials. Too weird and confusing.

So this morning I had a chat with the engineer. He said all their analog is now coming from converted digital transmission. So SD content may come through pillar-boxed or postage-stamp and main content is letter-boxed.

He said they were aware of the VBI but hadn't gotten around to masking it yet. This is good news for those with misbehaving VBI on their converter boxes. He explained that all these procedures are very cutting edge and that it is quite a job trying to figure out how to get it all to work.

I expect in the coming months there will be lot's of warts in transmission as they figure out how to get digital working properly. It could be a rough ride . . . be prepared.

That's why they included 4:3 zoom/crop modes in these boxes.

But up till recently, the analog signal has looked the way it always has. Now it's funky. Reduces the use of APT in the coming months (and pi$$es me off though I know why they're doing it) because I have been using APT regularly.

I've also seen, when I've got 97% Quality and 78% Signal, the video stopping and starting in spurts. The pillar boxing makes it really hard to use the automatic setting feature on the CECB's. Until the broadcasters get on the ball and quit forcing Letterbox, it will be a long ride too.

Must be using a DTVPal to do their conversion.
