As of today, which of these two would provide the better HTPC performance?

The question is integrated vs discrete. And the variable is either a DG45ID or a DP43TF/Radeon 4670 combination (and a bigger PSU with the discrete video).

The rest of the system would in either case be

Silverstone GD01B
E8400
Vista Home Premium 32
A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800
Western Digital SE WD1600AAJS 160GB hard disk
Western Digital GP WD7500AACS 750GB hard disk
Seasonic power supply (M12II SS-430GM with the DG45ID, S12 SS-550HT with the discrete video)
LG GGW-H20LK Blu-ray burner

It will be used on our secondary TV setup with a 43" Pioneer Elite PRO-810HD Plasma monitor (1024x768) and Yamaha RXV-663 receiver.

No gaming, just basic HTPC uses for video and audio. I may or may not add an HD-PVR.

While I would prefer the simpler, less power-hungry, DG45ID approach (and have been waiting and reading this forum with anticipation for its release and resolution of the early problems), would the discrete video solution still provide better, or more trouble-free, video and audio performance? Will either of these approaches work via HDMI with my Yamaha receiver?

I think the playback with just the DG45ID works just fine. So far for me anyways. I only have to go to one place for driver updates. Everything running thru the hdmi cable. What's not to love. And like you said, it will use less power and also produce less heat and noise. I really like powerdvd but until it solves the repeater bug, I am not using it. Using TotalMedia Theater so that problem is solved for now. It is hard to tell a difference between this setup and my standalone player. YMMV of course.
