My amp goes to 11!(british accent) lol this is funny

ok so i've been shopping for a new receiver to go with my new Klipsch reference setup ... it seemed like my Onkyo tx-sr601 at 85w / channel wasn't really pushing the klipschs very hard...

here's the funny part

today i paused my dvd player (Metallica) because i wanted to turn up the amp and hear how much hiss/distortion there was without any signal

for some reason i had it in my head that the max volume number was 80.. it's not .. it's 100!!! lol

i clicked the Metallica back on and jacked it up to 95 or so.. and damn.. it's louder than i can listen to it!!

running all channels stereo into RF-5, RC-7, RS-7, and RSW-12

so yea.. no need to buy a bigger amp at this time... i "discovered" 20% more power!!!!!!

i feel so stupid but i'm glad i found that out... time to wake the neighbors up!

I doubt it was 20% more

Klipsch speakers are often very efficient. They used to have some that pushed 100 dB sensitivity which is crazy. 1 watt to get an SPL of 100.

Note that the distortion which results from pushing your amp too hard can kill speakers. If you hear distortion, always back off the volume until it sounds better.

lol i'm all giddy about it... it makes such a HUGE difference between 75 and 85

yea my rf-5s are 99db and the rc-7 and rs-7 are 98db

i just said 20% because 100-80=20

but actually 80 x 1.25 is 100

i don't hear the distortion in the speakers just an amp hiss went the volume knob is jacked up and the line in is paused...

edit: the speakers are rated at 150w (rc-7 at 200) and my amp only pushed 85w/ch so i don't think i'm at risk of blowing them.. maybe so though...

It's easier to blow them with a smaller than with a bigger amp if you drive the smaller amp to clipping.

If there's no distortion, you should be ok.

What I do sometimes, is I turn the volume up to the point where I hear any distortion. I will hear some harshness in the high end, for example. Then I back it down.

Just remember, you only have one pair of ears. I have hearing damage, probably from abuse over the years. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to turn it down (and wear hearing protection at concerts)

i can't take it really really loud for very long anyway...

i'm not pushing the amp to clipping i don't think

you see before when i thought 80 was the highest i would only turn it up to 75 or so and that was what left me wanting just a hair more juice ..... now that i can safely crank it to 85 it's PLENTY loud... and still 15 from max with no audible distortion from the speakers...

me = happy camper
