hi
i have a panny ax200 the other day i saw the lens was a bit dirty i wiped it with my t shirt and then with the cloth that one gets with their shades or specs, after turning it on i could see some wipe marks on the lens i tried wiping it again and they dint go. now i am really worried cuz i sent a email to projector people and this is what they said

it is recommended that you clean your lens with a camera cloth. If you use cotton or any other fabric it may harm the protective coating on the outside of the lens, irreparably damaging your projector.

can the protective coating come out that easily? how do i know if mines off? and if it is how does it harm the projector?????

I don't know, sounds like BS to me. I use eyeglass cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the lens of my InFocus IN76 and have never had an issue. I lightly spray the cleaner on the cloth 1st, and just gently polish the lens.

If you're in doubt, you can try calling Panasonic directly, but you'll probably get some clueless CSR. What does your manual say to do?

It is actually true. There are various coatings on the lens, which can be taken off by abrasive chemical cleaners and/or cloths. Simply use a lens cleaning kit and you'll be fine. I doubt you did any damage the first time through using your shirt, but i would not recommend it for long term.

Well yes, you wouldn't want to use Fantastik with a paper towel, but it sounds like the OP used a cotton t-shirt and then a microfiber cloth meant for eyeglasses. If that was the case, I think he has nothing to worry about.

Hi amitsingh,

I think lens cleaning is one of those topics that you'll get a wide range of responses about, varying from... "just use Windex", to.... "spray a fine mist of NASA approved, Hubbel telescope cleaning solution onto a virgin lens cloth, one that has never been soiled by direct contact with human skin". OK, the last one was an exageration, but you get the drift.

My take is that as long as you use products that are designed to safely clean camera or eyeglass lenses, you'll be fine. As I mentioned, I use lens cleaning solution (for eyeglasses), and a soft cloth which is cotton (please don't tell Projector People!). Sometimes I polish with a microfiber cloth - the same one I use on my glasses. Is that the best way? I don't know, but that's what I do and it's been fine.

I also make sure I don't clean the lens too often. I actually went almost 2 years without cleaning, but when I did clean, I got off a lot of grime and got a decent brightness boost. I hadn't realized how dirty my lens had become. Now I make it a practice to clean every 2 - 3 months.

There are lots of posts and threads on the topic. If you spend some time searching you'll find plenty of opinions and info on the topic. When you read the "NASA cleaning solution only!" posts, just keep this old post in mind as a sanity check:
