Hi guys:tl;dr: ZFS vs RAID, Antec 300 vs Norco 4224 for new grad in apartment. Background
: I am just getting out of college and starting my first permanent job, so I don't have a house yet. I am currently renting a single bedroom apartment.
During school I took 2 Antec 300 cases and built 2 very rudimentary file servers (if you can even call it that) one with 10x 500GB while the other one with 10x1TB drives. (Each uses a 500GB drive as the boot drive.) Being in college with almost no money, I cheaped out on hardware and ended up using 2 PCI SATA controllers. The speed was terrible, never mind running ZFS, I just left the individual drives as it is without RAID of any kind. (My fstab had 10 extra lines.)Now
: That I have a place (for the next year) with a bit more disposable income. I would like to build another file server for my media needs. I don't have any transcoding needs, all media will be served to my Mac mini attached to the TV. I was wondering:Norco 4224 vs Antec 300
The Norco 4224 is louder, more expensive, heavier, has convient hot swappable bays.
While the Antec 300 case is cheap, lighter, relatively quieter. However, it does not have the hot swappable bays, and can only hold up to 11 drives.
I was wondering is there any real advantage of using a Norco 4224 (or similar) case over a standalone workstation like Antec 300?
The only advantage of the Antec 300 for me is that I can pack all the individual machines up and move without needing a forklift or a thousand war elephants.ZFS vs Hardware Raid
Depending on the answer from above.
I've never been a fan of hardware raid for some reason, I suppose CPU are relative cheap (compared to some of the raid controllers.)
If I were to stick with the Antec cases, my plan is to upgrade the existing machines' hardware to 64bit CPU with at least 16GB of memory and configure ZFS RAIDZ2.
Is there major advantages of using hardware raid? I was thinking with the 4224 I can do 2x Raid 6 with 12 sets of disks.OS
I'm not a fan of Windows. So the choice of OS I will be using will either be FreeBSD for ZFS or Ubuntu with ZFS...
Any tips is appreciated
