What's in your car stereo?

Not much action in the car stereo forum. What are you fidelity heads listening too in your cars? I've got a job that's a fair commute away and I've finally committed to getting some gear. What do you guys recommend?

I've seen some focal, boston acoustics and hi vi kits. I'm not so keen on going custom and building enclosures for the doors but I'm a little purturbed at the lack of selection that maybe I should select my own drivers and crossover.

dynaudio/mb quart/focal are what I'd look at first

Check www.elitecaraudio.com or www.diymobileaudio.com. Great sites for car audio information. AVS seems to be 100% focused on home audio despite the car audio forum here.

Alpine head unit with 6 disc CD changer and 6 disc DVD changer.

Focal 3way fronts powered by a McIntosh MCC222 I think. I have 6 McIntosh amps and I get the model numbers confused.

Factory rears powered by the headunit.

A pair of JL audio 10w6v2's in a slot ported enclosure powered by an Xtant monoblock. I forget the model number but IIRC it's the 500 watt version.

You might consider a 'stealth' approach, where you utilize the factory speaker grilles and locations to not tip off prowlers that you have a lot of expensive audio gear. I've had multi amp, multi sub car systems in the past, IMO it's only a matter of time till someone rips it off. And yes, I know about car alarms.

speaking of car stereo systems. Why do kids bump up there sub woofers to max volume? I mean,i see a lot of videos and when the bass kicks in that's all you hear.
They need some training on calibrating there system. kinda sad.

Some people don't know any better. Sort of like you not knowing which version of their, there, and they're (or in your signature it's also obvious you don't know how to use your and you're) to use when you write English. It's all a matter of being uneducated. Some people are more educated in certain areas than others. The kids you refer to have no idea what a good system sounds like, but if they did they'd certainly calibrate it accordingly. The same applies in reference to writing composition. If you knew that others looked down upon you for spelling and using English incorrectly, and had the knowledge to fix the problem you would do it.

My 2 cents.

My 2c: Installation is as critical as the equipment. Cars are horrible acoustic environments, and each model has it's own issues. If your vehicle has an active online community, peruse the forums to get an idea of what type of installs are possible/recommended; dropping componants in the stock location is often not optimal. In my case, I found out about a manufacturer (Wicked CAS) of quality fiberglass enclosures custom made for my car that worked out really well.

For the record, in my 350Z I have an Alpine 9857 HU with the 'full-speed' iPod cable (and just added a new 16GB iPod nano the same color as my car ), a 300/4 JL Audio amp powering 2 JL Audio 6.5 XR components in Wicked CAS door pods in the front doors and two channels bridged for a 10w1 sub in a Wicked CAS corner magic box in back. I wired the rear speakers off the HU, but have the amps turned off since there's no need for them in a 2 seater. I'm no JL fan-boy, I was origionally looking at Focal speakers and an Alpine PDX amp, but my installer got me JL gear at such a discount that I couldn't resist. The door pods image really well, and the sub box lets me keep most of my limited trunk space and integrates nicely. I wanted a reasonably priced system that didn't add too much weight or take up too much space; I'm very happy it.

oh my, that two cents cracks me up lol . "I can't read you're handwriting."

* Incorrect because the contraction for "you are" is being used as the possessive form of you. It should be replaced with "your". Would "I can't read you are handwriting" make sense?

Your signature says "Your gonna go deaf." It should read "You're gonna go deaf." In this case the contraction "You're" would split out to read "You are gonna go deaf." This would be the correct way to spell this. Did I write too fast for you to comprehend that? Or did you get it this time?

You're the one making these mistakes, then claiming to have no idea what I'm talking about. The reason you don't know is simply that. You don't understand English fundamentals. That is obvious, but you are willing to live with it.

You disparaged others because they didn't know how to properly listen to their stereos in your "opinion". This is simply a matter of personal preference or an opinion. If someone wants to listen to something with the bass cranked to +10 on the EQ who are you and I to tell them how it SHOULD sound? Now we can get into the semantics of what is "proper" or "what that original artist intended" but the truth of the matter, and what we preach around here is that everyone's preferences are their own and different. That's what makes audio such a special hobby. It's all opinionated and allows us to explore our own ideas of what sounds good and right.

What's not an opinion is how to write in English. I'd much rather have a "bad" opinion of how my music should sound to YOU than the inability to write in my own primary language. It's all a matter of preference though now isn't it?

I mean no disrespect, but seriously. Give it a rest.

I'm glad. I wasn't trying to offend. Just trying to point out that people just have different preferences in life on what's important to them. To some kids "accurate" musical reproduction just isn't one of them. It's unfortunate.

By the way that's a nice looking bedroom setup you have going there!
