It looks like Audiogon has changed its fees to crank-up the "take"!

"Effective September 27th, 2008, the following fee structure will be in effect. The fees below will apply to all items posted after this change.

Account Type Auction Classified Music
Private User $4.00 basic listing fee
+1.50% of sale price $4.00 basic listing fee
+1.50% of sale price 5 free listings /month
+1.50% of sale price
Commercial User $6.00 basic listing fee
+1.25% of sale price $6.00 basic listing fee
+1.25% of sale price 5 free listings /month
+1.25% of sale price

The Listing Fee will be due upon posting of the item.
The Transaction Fee will apply only if and when the item sells. "

Does anybody know what similar sites that don't charge a percentage?? I have some used gear to sell.....

It's time to break the monopoly.

I don't like some Audiogon policies & the new fee structure either. They are just getting too greedy. I agree, time to break the monopoly.

Maybe Congress can roll this into the bailout package.

Between this and paypal's take...I say it's horseshit. Boooo.
This seems reasonable. If you sell something for $1,000, then it costs you $19? Given the large number of educated and interested eyes that you are getting your gear exposed to, this is not expensive. If you care that much, add $25 to your asking price, still no big deal....
That's still cheaper than ebay, isn't it?
well, no one is stopping anyone from creating a new site if they are unhappy with existing ones....

all it'll cost you is a domain name and a hosted server....
Lots of people have ads that say the cost is $XX "plus 3% PayPal fee" so how long before they start saying cost is $XX plus 1.5% Audiogon fee!

The economy is hurting everybody.

Another bizarre thing they did earlier this year is to deny the linking of URLs in your item description.
This means you are not allowed to provide links to any product info, reviews, etc.
I cannot see the purpose of limiting one's ad content like that !!!

I took your idea. I now own audiogon.info and audiogon.biz.

I'm into it deep for $12.

I'm ready for the next step. Does anybody have the experience and desire to put a site together??? Since mostly guys are on that site, Chu can pickout some rather nice female pictures. Chu, any ideas???

Seriously, PM me if this happens to be your skill set.

I have no such skillset but I am willing to charge a mere 1.5% fee per product sold for an 'advisor fee' 1.5% "i'll look at your ad to see if I like it" fee and a 5% premium for reading this thread

well, i'm gonna have to charge you 5% per sale for use of my idea...

hmmm... this probably shouldn't be too hard... we gonna charge, or we gonna do it for free?

need:

- a domain (check, we got that)...
- a server host that has some type of checkout mechanism to get people to pay for the ads... that's no biggie, those are a dime a dozen...
- some type of entry form for people to put in ads... again, no biggie, it's just a post data form... any decent hosting service will have tools to do that...
- method of storing/displaying data... a bit more of a biggie, but not too bad...
- chu to come up with some pictures... we KNOW that's no biggie...
- customers to actually use it... now that could be the hard part...

The goal is to break even. With hits comes value (think Craigs list). Or charge only for advertising.

You will go backwards for x amount of months. I've got the check book if others have the skill set.

Agreed, but probably will change in due time. BTW, I think Americans can list on Canuck as well if they wanted. Mind you, given the audience it might take more time to sell than on Audiogon ...

In 1996, I was wanted soundvideo.com URL and I paid about $1500. I started at about $900 and it went up the more I tried to negotiate.

Maybe Audiogon.com and Audiogon.net might want to my Audiogon.info and Audiogon.biz URL's for $1500 each (plus 1.5% and a 3% Paypal fee).

I don't think I could advertise the new site in Stereophile and other Primedia magazines because the bought Audiogon.com and .net years ago. (At least I thought they did).
