Still it was a genuine refreshing surprise that someone else saw through to his current role from that resume. Just another reflection of the astonishingly awesome genius of Vince Gilligan, which is what makes BB the best TV I've ever been exposed to. I watch on blu-ray though, and will add this: the sound quality on the latest season is just about the highest example of reference that I own -- feature length mega blockbuster movies included. Just utterly delicious as unexpected compound ectasy while watching the narrative brilliance unfold.
We agree that lossless HD audio, only available on BDs, is in a class by itself. Nevertheless, I have noticed in recent years that the sound design of many TV shows, Breaking Bad being a shining example, has improved to the point where even the lossy version of 5.1 audio sounds wonderful on a good HT audio system, even via a network's HD telecasts.

Well said. I was watching the HD streaming versions with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks, and was impressed by the surround and the strong bass content, which was used for emphasis in the scenes involving violence.

That may be true, I wouldn't know -- wasn't trying to be a snob about only watching on blu -- I actually only have the most basic cable package and don't watch anything on the more "exotic" channels (like even AMC!) as they air.

Also, been a number of years since I've had any source other than blu-ray hooked into the awesome system -- too afraid of the undependability of transmission jeopardizing my equipment. This followed upon a massive static bomb from a JVC DVHS unit -- blew the tweeters on my 400 lb $30K speakers and was told when I had to have them hauled off to work on, that the last two existing replacement tweets were what would be going into babies.

So that's it -- don't like turning down the volume on commercials either. Besides, after watching all seasons of BB this way, I really can't even imagine having to wait week after week for the next one! What torture you put yourself through! Glad the sound transmits by broadcast well though -- not like they absolutely had to raise the sound design to such a high level when the narrative and acting would definitely sustain the production, but I've got to tell you, there is joy in the fact that they've matched a standard of quality on the technical side -- it is almost makes this level of TV too good to be true!

...And therein lies the downside of blu watching -- for every delicious second you watch, count one more second down -- as it approaches the end, a certain kind of depression sets in -- guess that's why instead of watching the last season of TRUE BLOOD which I've not yet seen, or the first season of BOARDWALK EMPIRE, also not seen, or first season of TREME, not seen, even though I have all those blus here, I go back one season to BB season three -- might watch one and two again just after that -- for the like the fourth time!

I was an early adopter of TiVo's technology, one of the best features of which is an instant 30 seconds fast forward button and an instant 8 seconds reverse button. With that capability, I DVR everything and never, ever watch commercials, which I hate, hate, hate! In April my family gave me a TiVo Premiere Elite, which has 4 HD tuners and 2TB of disc storage. That way, I don't miss anything I want to see. Better yet, the audio components of my HT system, while certainly less grand than some here, are nevertheless very good, see my profile.

All of the foregoing said, I am as much a BD snob as you. 1080p video and lossless HD audio really do put BD technology in a class by itself. I continue to buy BDs and occasionally rent them from Redbox too, although I finally gave up on both Netflix and Blockbuster. I have a number of TV series on BD, among them Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and Downton Abbey. I may ultimately buy the Breaking Bad BDs too but will wait for them to get a bit cheaper first.

Not to be too picky, but that is an M-60E4, Mark 43, Mod 1 with short 37" assault barrel, and lacking the top carry handle and the extended flash suppressor and the top post sights, but with attached bipod. In other words, it is the version used currently by US Navy SEALS. The two boxes of ammunition are M80 ball with M62 tracer rounds in every 5th position, with the "M13" designation on the ammo boxes indicating that these are linked disintegrating belts. Tracer ammunition is the only way to aim a machine gun without functioning sights.

I preseme that the final scene from the final episode from this final season of Breaking Bad will be the infamous "Scarface" moment when Walt does the "Tony Montana" thing: "You wanna f**k with me? Okay. You wanna play rough? Okay. Say hello to my leettle friend!"....and opens up on his enemies.

Vince Gilligan said from the beginning that an ordinary High School Chemistry teacher would become Scarface during the run of the series. Walt is pretty far there already.

Now he goes to war with the Cartel over the former Gustavo Fring's territory.

Gary -- Thanks. I can remember a time when the quality of the 5.1 sound on any TV show was a crap shoot. These days, though, good surround effects and solid LFE are the rule rather than the exception. In addition to Breaking Bad, which has terrific sound design, Game of Thrones stands out. The LFE in the battle scene toward the end of Season 2 made me levitate.smile.gif

I yield to a expert I was going on google images , used the m60 number on the ammo box as a starting point (the # on the manual was partly obscured) , to a untrained eye a image of a M62 looked like the gun in the trunk ...
Thanx for the correction ... so i wasn't too far off smile.gif

Oh my - if you're sensitive to the "look and feel" of a show, BE might be the best I've seen for my tastes, as broadcast. If the BD supports it, and no reason not to think so, you're in for a treat.

Brian Cranston is "The Man"

It's "disservice" and Bryan not Brian. eek.gif

When one resorts to name calling (Fatso), it's an admission that they lost the debate. smile.gif

Excellent episode (as usual) !

At this point I don't know who is scarier Mike or Walt....wow.

It was a nice change of pace to see the fringe players in Gus's former empire.

Hank is such a great detective...I have to wonder if that will cost him dearly down the line.

Oh yeah Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo "Gus" Fring deserves that Emmy for Supporting Actor.

Something tells me we haven't seen the last of the German folks. My hunch is that they will be pretty interested in anyone trying to start a lab to replace them. Walt's assumption that there's no competition is flat wrong.

Doesn't Skylar look different this year? I know the hair is shorter but something about her face looks different too. Maybe a nose job?
What I especially love about this series is the 'interminable silence/stillness in between dialogue or action in major scenes'. It shows the incredible calmness of major players like Mike and Walt their stone coldness'. I am like a wound up spring when watching these scenes. Well Done !!

Yep, a great episode, one of my favorites of the whole series. Lotsa demented things going on. Jonathan Banks shows himself to be a highly unappreciated actor, with his Mike being simultaneously chilling and possibly the most sane and sensible character among the leads. For a murderer, that is.Trine Christensen's Lydia(?) is clearly going to be big truble too.

The only thing I wished for was that they had made the German scenes seem more as if they were actually in Germany.

This season is going to end too soon.

This episode should be called "Mike" or "Mr. Ehrmantraut"..

Just wow from beginning to end...

The whole "food chain empire" from Madrigal down? I wonder if they also do drugs on those other food chains..

Great episode, and it was Directed by the very talented Michelle MacLaren.. Who is Lydia, and what is her connection to Gus, and the empire??? Taking down the sign early on was terrific. "Mike" plays a great heavy, he was Vinny Terranova's handler, with an edge, on Wise Guy.... Hank's Boss being set-up as the scape-goat??? Such a great show, I never look at the clock when it's on, and I always want more when it's over. Vince Gilligan, you are something....

I

I too was wondering about Lydia. I can't recall her from past episodes.
I remember Banks from Beverly Hills Cop. He was a great bad guy, in, I believe, the first film. He and Eddie Murphy kept calling each other "Cuz". They "wrecked" a restaurant.

Don't know about her physical appearance, but in that bed scene she looked like someone who is completely terrified of the person lying next to her, great acting by Anna Gunn without even saying a word, it's scenes like this that catapult this show above the rest of the crowd.

I just watched the marathon for all of the seasons and don't recall seeing Lydia in any of them.

I'd guess she lost about 30 lb.
That's what I was thinking which made her face a little thinner.

Wasn't her pregnancy real? If so, she's probably back to her normal weight now.

She's a new character just introduced(to us the audience) this season, we haven't seen or heard of her prior to this episode.

Good episode for sure.
I liked Saul taking about lottery winners not going out and buying another lotto ticket.
Walt: "what lottery did I win exactly"?
Saul: "Hey, you're alive... I mean, as far as I'm concerned that's the Irish sweepstakes"

Hope we get some Badger and Skinny Pete soon, I miss those guys.
Badger actor quite busy on NCIS, yes?

Although the seasons won't match anyway he can do both..

I bet Jesse is recruiting them again to sell, they need the manpower..
Excellent hour, Mike should get his own spin off show once BB is done.. Great actor.

She looks different because she's got one foot in her grave.....Walt will have to deal with her in some fashion.

As usual, BB hit the mark. What other show has been so consistent, year after year? I think I have disliked exactly one episode over the entire series. Just one. This show just kills. It's spot on each week and the cast is so good, they have become their characters. It's like we are watching a documentary of real people.
