Any people here still rooting for Walt? Vince Gilligan and the cast always seem baffled when they hear someone say that they are still sympathetic towards him, and they hear it a lot. All the celebrity guests so far on Talking Bad have expressed their sympathy for Walt. Conan O'Brien, a big fan of the show, has shared the same opinion. Even I can't bring myself to hate him.
Brock? I'm sure Walt, as a chemist, knew how much to give him without killing him. It was a life or death situation and Walt was scared for his family's lives. He had little or no other options. Jane? The heroin addict who, hours earlier, had threatened and blackmailed him into delivering the bag full of money that would have only contributed to both her and Jesse's O.D.? Mike? He was ready to kill Walt himself at the end of season three, before Walt had Jesse kill Gale (which would never have happened if Gus hadn't forced Walt's hand).
To be clear, I do recognize that Walt is a destructive force. He has caused a domino effect of decay and ruin, all stemming from his original decision to start cooking meth. The plane crash at the end of season two was probably the best imagery of Walt's chaotic ripple effect. And yet... I still don't hate the guy. Walt is a man who survives. Sure, he has some serious character flaws, most of all, his enormous ego, but I just can't hate a guy who has taken such control of his own destiny. He's a winner now. Those who oppose him usually fall (though I'm sure this is bound to change in these last few episodes).
Given what Vince set out to do with the character (turn the protagonist into the antagonist), I wonder if he gets pissed at the fact that Walt still has his fair share of supporters.
