Help me find a slim bezel 40" LCD

Hey guys I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. I have a cherry entertainment center I built about 7-8 years ago. Of course at the time it was the perfect size for what was available then but now it's too narrow to fit anything decent in it. My wife really doesn't want to get rid of it since I built it unless I build a new one which I don't have time to do right now. I can't really push her too hard on this since she reminded me when I was setting up the system in the basement and putting up room treatments etc. that I told her the basement was mine and she could decorate the whole upstairs
But now with a baby I don't spend much time in the basement watching my good setup and find myself watching more and more tv in the living room with the crappy tv.
I've always been a plasma guy but no one seems to make a 37" or 40" plasma anymore so now I'm looking at lcd's. I can only find 3 40" lcd's that will fit in my space. I only have 38 1/8" to work with on the width. The 3 I found are

Toshiba 40xf550u (not available locally to check out)
Mitsubishi lt40133 or lt40148 (not available locally to check out)
Sony KDL-40Z4100 (looks good but kind of overpriced IMO)

I was going to order the 550u from Costco but after reading that thread I decided to think about it a little more and see if something else came up and now it's out of stock. So does anyone have any other suggestions on a 40" that will fit?
I may just grab a cheaper 37" 720 tv for now. Either way a 37 or 40 is too small since the couch is like 12' away anyway and build a new unit to hold a 50" + when I have the time. But I have to do something since I can't watch that 36" standard def tv much longer when I have a 50" plasma and 42" plasma sitting unused in other rooms
Thanks for the help in advance and sorry for babbling on.

you might be wise to go to the manufacurers' sites and check for their recommended clearances, top, sides and back, for heat.

I have plenty of room on the top and tons of room in the back since it was made for a 36" crt.

Any other thoughts on this?

if i were in your shoes, i would go with the toshiba or sony. i had to deal with the space issue as well and those were the three sets i was considering.in terms of pq, they are pretty comparable with both edging out the other in certain aspects. if cost is a concern, the toshiba would definitely be the way to go. in regards to costco, it seems to be the luck of the draw. i would post for some advice from those who got their sets from costco and are happy with them. i got my set from an established ebay seller, and it has worked flawlessly for me the past 6 months. i wouldn't fret about the size too much. i mean obviously a 52 inch would be better over a 40 inch tv, but even at your viewing distance, it would still be a quality experience. good hunting and happy shopping!

I'd go for a 52" or larger. You can view a 65-70" at 12' easily if you view primarily HD. I have a 57" at 8.5' and want bigger and when I went from a 45" to 57" the difference was dramatic and I would never go back to a smaller panel especially only 40". Pixels get larger and more details become observable = more WoW in everything viewed. I still have the 45" upstairs and never once had a desire to go view the smaller panel for anything and considering the 65" Sharp LED LCD when the price gets down to reality or the SE94 65" if the price gets cheap enough versus an LED at 2-3 times the price.

There's a 70" XBR7 for $20,000 lol

Why not just get a projection for 100" O_O

If size is your number one concern, there is a few TVs that are "Super Slim".
FYI the Sony set is not considered slim, but is the best set out of the ones you listed.

The Toshiba is the smallest/thinest one out of all of them.

Sharp also has a 42" slim LCD, It is slim enough to match 40" TVs

Samsung also has a 46" slim LCD (& the best of them all), but no 40".

Panasonic still offers a professional 37" plasma monitor (TH-37PH10UK).

Edit: There is one left on Amazon -- it's half price. Keep in mind that it's a monitor. You half to purchase the table stand, speakers, tuner, maybe even the hdmi board separately.

Any recommendations for a 42" slim bezel LCD? The Sharp D64U is one of the only ones I've found but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find.. and they went and made the 65U slightly wider. I have 40 1/8" to work with. I may just settle with a HQ 40" if it comes down to it, but like the OP I'm like 12' away on the far couch and even an extra 2" may help.

Cheers

Sony Z Series and I think XBR 6 Series is the same size as the Z series with better speakers.

jv225....did you buy one yet? I've got a smidge more width in my armoire, 38.5", but the same goal. There WAS a Samsung 720i (LN-T4061F) that would have fit mine (but not yours) and it was discontinued, so I worry that the Sony might be too at some point. A buddy bought the Toshiba 40RF350U in December 07 for $1699 (36 7/8" wide) and that got disco'ed and replaced with the more $$$ 40XF550OU

I just looked at the 2 Sonys at Tweeter, which is going out of business. Prices aren't exactly rock bottom (yet?): $1980 for the Z, $2250 for the XBR6

The Tweeter guy said the Z is "basically last year's XBR, only slimmer [in depth]"...i.e the newest technology starts out a little fat, then next year it's thinner and cheaper.... the only speaker difference is that the XBR offers different color speaker grilles (for additional $$).

there's so much wrong with what the tweeter guy is tweetin', it's hard to know where to start. you might want to go to www.sonystyle.com and read up on the descriptions of the different sets (e.g. the xbr6 40 46 52 speakers are far superior to the z4100 - the xbr6 include a seperate bass 'woofer' for starters. the z4100 is the slim bezel model of the 2008 model line, inserted in the lineup probably to counter the competitions slim bezels.

when you get through with the descriptions at sonystyle, click the support button on top and go to the manuals section and download the 'marketing specifications' pdf sheets for the models that interest you, for more detailed specs, etc and you will get the full dimensions there as well.
