help me choose an avr, i'm clueless

I am not tech savy but I want a new AVR. I'd like one that is easy to use and I could figure out how to set it up in a short amount of time.

I want it to be cheap as possible but still adequate for my needs.

It will be used for my plasma tv, dish network, blu ray player, and 5.1 audio - speakers are definitive technology procinema.

what do you guys suggest???? I don't want to spend more than 200-$300 MAX. With the 30% off at ebay right now its probably a good time for me to buy. Thanks!!!

I would suggest looking at the VSX-818V-K from Pioneer. It's got HDMI, 5.1 surround sound, and is sub $300. You can probably find it on newegg or your local Best Buy for cheaper. If you want specs on it go to pioneers website and take a look. There are others out there like Denon, Harmon Kardon but they tend to bit more expensive.

Good Luck!!

Marantz 4001/4002, Onkyo 604/605, Yamaha 463/6140/661/663, HK247, Sony DG720/DG810, and Denon 887/788/1908 would be great refurb options in this price range, especially when purchased from an authorized dealer with a warranty. Every refurb I bought was idential to its new equivalent.

Some of these you may find for new within your budget. Some refurb options will get you more for your money however.

Keep in mind, all of the above receivers support lossless audio of the advanced audio codecs via PCM (or bitstream for the 663/605). IMO, I would not buy a receiver that was not capable of this, even if you currently aren't planning BD soon. The price increase isn't drastic for this feature.

Thanks!

can the sony dg720 do 6.1 and if so how would I set it up to do that? also can I set the crossovers to 80, 100, or 120?

of those you listed i'm leaning towards the dg720 I think. I read about this - "if the HD-DVD/Blu-ray player decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA, the receiver can take in the resulting multichannel (5.1/7.1) PCM signals and play them."

I have a Sony BDP-S300 bluray player, does it decode the audio and send LPCM?

I'm spending all this money on plasma tv, bluray player, speakers.....I want to make sure blurays sound the way they are supposed to! I don't really know what I'm talking about but I want this receiver to last me for years and play blurays the best way, I don't want to sacrifice any sound. thanks!!!

with my needs and a Sony BDP-S300 bluray player which is the best receiver for me, also I've changed my mind to wanting a receiver capable of 6.1 audio because I may need an extra speaker to put right beside my dad's right ear because he can't hear well

- a Sony DG720 or a Denon 1908 or neither...I'm itching to make a purchase, thanks!!!

6.1 isn't going to help you with your dad... the only thing the 6th channel is going to give you is some type of matrixed surround...
