Elemental Design Promotion A5-350 With 550 LT Amp for $650:

Thread Starter
Elemental design is giving buyers of the A5-350 the option to select the 550 watt LT/550 amp for the same price as the 350 watt amp.

They are also giving $100 off a pair of the A5-550's, which makes them $1,200 per pair.

There is a poll showing that as many as 20 some people had problems with the LT/550 amp. I don't own one and can't say what may have been going on with that, except that a capacitor seemed to fail for a hand full of buyers.

I am going to stop short of making a recommendation to get the 550 watt amp based on the known problem. Still, this may be of interest to some. My sense is that Ed has made changes to the 550 watt plate amp, but without speaking to the honchos at Ed, I don't know where they are with modifications, etc.

Probably worth a call if you are interested.

That was actually a problem with the first generation of the amplifiers. A problem that has been rectified in the now fourth generation of them. Anyone who has had an issue has either gotten a new amplifier or their amplifier repaired. Keiga sent us extra boards to repair damaged ones while we were waiting on shipment of factory modified amplifiers.

For a limited time, we were actually removing the offending parts ourselves and soldering in the new resistors/caps but this was too time consuming and they agreed that since this was an issue caused by the modifications we requested to their stock amplifiers(power increase, increased sensitivity), but that they did no catch during their own QC process, they would just send full boards to us to expedite repair/replacement.

The only "problem" that has been experienced with the newer amplifiers is the fact that they can shut off when pushed to/past their limits. I know there are still a few people out there with the first generation of the LT/550's and we get those replaced the second we are contacted regarding them, but none of the amplifiers with the board swap/modification at Keiga have had any sort of failure.

Trust me, if we were still having an issue of any sort with the amplifiers, we wouldn't try to get more of them out there so we could apologize to more people about their sub ceasing to function.

I just bought this amp a few days ago matched with a 16Ov2 and while it is annoying that the amp cuts out as it does...I guarantee it is well past what the amp is rated for. I just wish instead of shutting itself down, it would level itself off

As far as eD itself...this was the first time I have ordered from them and their customer service and tech help have been awesome...even with brent(i think that is his name) calling to make sure my stuff arrived in good shape.

Brett actually

There's a post somewhere on here from Ben about how we're mostly hobbyists and we sold products designed around how we'd use them. Amplifiers that aren't artificially limited, they just stop when they're pushed too far.

Unfortunately, that's something that it would seem that as we grow larger, less of the market is understanding of. It shouldn't shut off, but just clip the output/stop getting louder, as such, that's something we're starting to look into in the future.

when does this amp actually see the 'clipping'? From the input signal, amplified signal, x-overed signal, or does it see the speaker clipping? all or one?

sorry if this is off the OP topic..just curious

The clipping could be from the original input signal, or due to the massive boost in the signal in the amplifier when creating the output power...so choice 1 or 2 will make the amp turn off. Choice 1 when will even work when you're just providing too much voltage, like say 8V into an LT/550, it'll turn red almost instantly.

Chris,

My amp is still en route and I paid for the upgraded LT-550. Will this offer be extended to individuals like me and be credited?

Thanks.

Just like with the matte finish, anyone who paid for the amplifier that hasn't received their sub yet or just had it ship will be getting a refund of the difference.

Chris, two things:
A. I'd jump on those two 350s if you hadn't talked me into the A7S
and 2. See what you get for advertising???

He's not kidding about "the second we are contacted" either. My amp had this issue. I called, received a new amp in the mail within a couple of days as well as a pre-paid FedEx sticker to send the old amp back. The whole process cost me nothing and I was only without my sub for a couple of days. Service like that is ridiculously rare these days.

It seems ED is making a good job....

That's nice to hear and really something that gets overlooked. For instance, my speakers are from a smaller, Internet based business that is fairly well regarded here, at least in the past, for their exceptional CS. Must be hit and miss, because I'm having problems and need to send them in for warranty work. I've been working for 5 days now to get specifics on getting them back (RAM, etc.) and still haven't gotten anywhere.

Not going to mention the name, as I'm VERY pleased with the product and the service at time of purchase, but I will admit that these are the kind of things that will be at the forefront of mind when upgrade time comes.

Sorry about the semi-OT rant.

Thanks for the info. I think we can all figure out who you're referring to.

Me too. Please go ahead and call them out. It's the only way the rest of us can benefit from your post. It's one thing to just bash a company and say they suck because you are overly picky or have ridiculously high expections. But if they haven't responded about basic RMA info. in 5 days, that is fair game to mention on here.

Not just yet, I'm going to ride this out and see. I very well MAY get an explanation that pleases me, as we're still at the point that there could be reasonable and excusable reasons for the delay.

And if I drop a name here, no amount of retraction on my part could cancel out the negative of the original assertation.

FWIW though, I'd be real surprised if anyone guessed who it was. There are several companies right now that have alot of complaints being written about them. Even with a quick search, I couldn't find anything negative about the company I'm dealing with. That does lead me to hope this will be resolved satisfactorily.

Soooo.

Good deal on these subs.

Are there other finishes on these subs now.

Are you talking about HSU?
Their customer service is known for their excellency...

Chris,

I just replaced my amp over the weekend (sending old one back today) and I've noticed it turning red quite frequently, even when not in use. Is there something that can be done about this?

Mine turns red when I leave the button on and the switch to auto. I believe the red light means it is in "sleep" mode. It will turn back on when it gets a signal, but it is not currently on. you might be talking about something completely else for all I know though.
speaking of the red light and all that... is it recommended to leave the power switch "on" all the time and have it set to auto with the red light, or to just turn it on and off when you want to use the sub? seems like leaving it on/auto all the time would wear on the amp, but maybe turning it off/on is worse?

maybe that's what it is. It didn't do that before i switched the amp. (well maybe I didn't have it on 'auto' either). let me experiment with that tonight.

What do you guys think about the A5-350 and mixing it with my current A3-300? Is it good to have different size subs or would this be bad?

I have an Onkyo 805 so I would have to use a Y adapter at the reciever to split it into each sub.
