optical from cable box not as loud as hdmi from ps3

I'm not sure if this is the right place to be asking this so I apologize in advance if it isn't. I have a Motorola Comcast cable box connected to my Yamaha rx-v463 via optical/SPDIF and I have a PS3 connected to the same receiver via HDMI. The audio from my PS3 is at least twice as loud as the audio from my cable box. Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's normal to experience differences in volume among sources. Not sure why it would be twice as loud. Did you raise your PS3 volume at all? It's best left at the default.

If your on two channel content? This is pretty common. Does the volume even up with true 5.1 content comming from the cable box?

If you have a cable channel like HBO, Showtime or Starz try putting the cable box on one of those channels. This should have at least Dolby Digital surround sound. The regular channels like abc or nbc during the day don't normally have surround sound so the audio is typically lower. At primetime however on the HD channels the audio is also Dolby Digital so try that out.

Even on a channel that is outputting Dolby Digital the volume output is still significantly lower than any music or movies played through my PS3.

And your PS3 is not set to provide any extra gain?
I guess it is time to switch to optical on the PS3 and see if it evens up any at all.

I have just not experienced this with my PS3 is all, I am inclined to believe it is one of the 10,000 audio settings available on the PS3...

OK OK, I know there really aren't 10,000, but you get my point.

It would take somebody with the same AVR, Same PS3 and same cable to chime in to provide any real good input for you on it.
