MythTV -- What hardware to get 7.1 audio to A/V Receiver?

Wanting to order parts for a new myth FRONTEND...

I am starting to get annoyed with the lack of driver support!!!

I have a new audio system, with 7 new speakers and a nice A/V receiver that has some SPDIF inputs...

I want the A/V receiver to handle the decoding of the audio so I assume I need my myth frontend to output LPCM in order to accomplish this.

Do any motherboards (with built-in spdif out) support this as of late? Preferably one that supports this over HDMI???

Just a note, HDMI is the only way to get more that 2 channel LPCM. SPDIF can only put a lossy 5.1 out, not enough bandwidth.

Yes, one of the Gigabyte s2h boards I have my eye on has a Nvidia chipset and a 8xxx series video card - I DIDN'T BUY IT BECAUSE I WAS TOLD NO DRIVER SUPPORT FOR THE 8000 SERIES NVIDIA...

Has this been remedied with any new driver releases?????????????

Is there NO way to get true lossless 5.1 audio from a linux Myth box???

AFAIK, 5.1 optical spdif is currently the best you can get in linux, even over HDMI (my AMD board supports audio over HDMI, but the ATI video drivers are crap). 7.1 is only supported over analog. So, you can pass-through DD & DTS via spdif to your AV receiver (which is what I do). The only source that outputs 7.1 is blu-ray/HD-DVD, anyway. Maybe your receiver can upmix the other 2 channels?

Do you mean just plug the toslink cable between the SPDIF out on the Frontend, and the SPDIF in on the AV receiver? Is this bitstream or LPCM? Is there a way to change this in MythTV?

I want to have the A/V receiver do the decoding of the signal! (the little DTS or DD light on the receiver makes me feel better!)

Yes, spdif-out on frontend to spdif-in on receiver, and mythtv has options to enable DD & DTS pass-through. This will send the signal directly to your receiver and your receiver will decode it. The little light will come on

I think there actually are a couple of people online selling 7.1 mixes of their music (using multi-channel flac encoding iirc). Although they might have only been 5.1, I wasn't paying really close attention since I wasn't interested. But basically, you're right, the only significant sources are BD and HD.
