Temporary AVR Solution

I'm about to buy a set of Dynaudio Focus speakers for home theater usage. Ultimately, I may go with a Parasound Halo to drive them with whatever the cheapest Level 6 pre/pro is at the time. For now, however, I am spending all of my disposable income on the speakers alone - as such, is there a cheap(er) receiver that will serve my needs for a couple of years until I buy separates? Ideally, 4 HDMI in, passing of audio over HDMI are included.

Thanks.

define cheap(er)

Less than 1500 dollars though that number can be moved around a little bit. It all depends on the suggestion and how suitable it is.

Wittle bump?

My 2 cents...I heard the Arcam 350 powering a set of Focus 220's about 2 months ago. Sounded really good.

Yea, I like the Arcam and wish I could afford the 600..

My issue, I suppose, is that at the end of the day, the power of the unit is sort of inconsequential given that I'll be using an external amp to power them. That being said, I'm seeking something with all the whatchamacallits and gadgetry (TrueHD over HDMI, etc.) that will allow me to use it into the future as a decent pre-pro with respectable sound quality with priorities being around 50% music/50% HT. I wish I had the luxury of using another system for music but that is not possible at this time.

I just thought that was a funny exchange... wish I could spend all of my disposable income and then have to settle for a "cheap" $1500 receiver... here I was about to recommend a $200 used model!

1500 dollars is cheap for audio equipment to most AVSers. We're not talking Classe, Mcintosh, or heck, Arcam here.

Believe it or not, your budget can buy you an entry/mid HT receiver acting as pre, and an outboard amp from Rotel, Outlaw, NAD, Sunfire, Emotiva, if willing to buy used, refurbished, and/or new depending on which model.

For my HT rig, I use a refurbed Onkyo 805 + refurbed NAD T973 for little more than your budget, for example. And stuff has only become cheaper since I bought this stuff.

I would whole-heartedly dispute that statement wrt receivers, or perhaps you don't spend a lot of time reading the many owners threads for "entry level" units like the Yammy 663, Onkyo 605/606, Denon 1909/789, etc. or any of the daily "best budget receiver??" threads.

there's all types... not hatin', just sayin'...

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that it's cheap for me - it isn't. You're right, I just don't spend a lot of times reading those threads - I usually end up in the Anthem or "high-end" threads and I see a ton of people spending 8k on processors and 10k on mains. No offense intended.

Perhaps I should just go with a PR-SC885P/DTC-9.8 and assume an amp is necessary? If I spend around 1500 on a receiver, it needs to be able to do all the Onkyo Pro/Integra can to justify itself.

*sigh*

are you going to use balanced XLR connections? Do you need dual HDMI outputs? Are you planning on needing the Reon? Are you going to pay for Audyssey Pro calibration?

Otherwise you can spend 1/3 as much, and perhaps get all of the rest.

I could. I don't. I'd like it. I wouldn't mind it.

What is your recommendation that rings in at 1/3 of that?
