SMX 120in screen vs. Stewart GrayHawk

Thread Starter
Would like to get an SMX screen so i may place all three front speakers behind it but torn between SMX, or going with a top of the line stewart greyhawk screen which would not be audio transparent (thus offering a little better video performance.)

by going SMX would i be giving up a lot of video for better audio performance?

Given the choice what would the pros do?

A screen pro would post in the screen forum - and maybe even tell you Stewart can microperf most of their screen materials -a wide range of materials optomized for video/room tradeoffs.

So I suggest you move your question to the right forum - as it is about specific screens and their tradeoffs. In general the tradeoff with LCR behind any acoustic screen outweighs any tradeoffs of compromised placements around a screen.

If this is for your greatroom then I presume since panels are off the table -so is a fixed screen. Your choices get limited for perfed pulldowns and you have to look at perfed motorized tensioned which get way more expensive than fixed screens. A tradeoff might be perfing the blackdrop at screen top for the center channel only. But if your room is not treated - which brand/option is the best perf is the least of your worries.

ANother recommendation to post in the appropriate forum...screen forum. I know folks use this area as a catch all...but I think the overall best information specific to equipment and gear questions can be found in that area's specific forum. That where the folks hang out that are really into that topic. The experts if you will

Well, I am NOT an HT pro, nor do I play one on TV, but I think I catagorically state you will NOT loose anything visually OR acoustically with SMX.

I have one of the original "do it yourself" SMX screen, and it is, in a word, stunning, visually and acoustically.

However, having said that, I do NOT know what the Stewart is like, but I have heard you MAY get some better contrast with the grey, but that is only beneficial if your theater is not completely light controllable.

Todays projectors are so much ahead, IMHO, of the projectors that are only like, two years old, so the issue of room light controllability may NOT be so much of an issue anymore. (ei the Panasonic line of light cannons...)
Anyway, just my $0.02...

Best,
Tom

I don't have room to put my speakers behind the screen but wondered how many people put OC703 on the wall and put a perf screen over it just for accoustic purposes.

Thanks

You won't lose anything visually with SMX and you will have a fantastic audio experience with your 3 fronts behind the screen. By all means go SMX.

I am in full agreement. I have a 10' wide SMX screen with Paradigm SA-35's as LCR and everything is awesome, pic quality and sound. Having the speakers behind the screen makes for a very immersive effect!
