Have you gone back and rechecked all your settings since the update? Something may have changed - secondary audio being the most likely suspect.

I have a similar question. I just upgraded my AVR to a Denon 2310CI, which can do all decoding and is hooked up via HDMI (it replaces a Yamaha 2600 which couldn't, so I had been sending HD audio to it via 5.1 analogs).

Put in a DTS-HD Master disc today for the first time (made sure the 55 was set to bitstream, secondary audio off). No sound (even for bitstreamed TrueHD). I could still get it via PCM, but I started wondering if I had a bad Denon (mild freak-out...). Checked, re-checked settings on both and nothing was wrong. Finally, I unplugged the 35 and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Voila! HD audio via bitstream.

So...academic question time: since I have been keeping up-to-date with the firmwares, but have never had a need to reset (everything always worked just fine via analog out), and this was the first time I tried to bitstream (all other discs I've played this week with the Denon have been 5.1 uncompressed, so via PCM), do you think that was what the problem was? It just needed a reset (if that is what I did by unplugging it)? Or would there be something else going on? Just curious, now that my stomach has settled.

Twice my BD35 stopped bitstreaming HD codecs after firmware updates. Reset to factory defaults (Setup/Other) restored the HD output.

After doing a firmware update you should always do a reset of the BD 35/55 (just like rebooting your computer after doing an update) and check all of your settings. They can sometimes change with the reset. Make sure that DD/DTS is set to bitstream and Secondary Audio is turned off.

Edit: Drat! Guess I ought to check to see if there is a page after the question I answer to make sure multiple people haven't already answered the same. I hate when that happens.

I posted almost this exact same problem a few weeks ago - bitstream just quit working to my Onkyo 706 AVR. A reset fixed it.

Firmware update to 2.0 had been done a few weeks prior without any problem. Don't think I did a reset at that time (I always do, just forgot that one time). What happened between the update and the bitstream failure I do not know. Everything works fine now.

This happened to me as well after the 2.0 update. I resolved the problem by powering down my BD35 from the remote, and when I turned it on again everything worked fine.

It was definitely scary for a while there.

The first time it happened to me, I did not yet have an HDMI receiver yet, so I wasn't even aware that it had happened during the 1.5>1.6 update. When I got my new receiver just a few weeks later it was more than a little frustrating not being able to get the HD audio running. AVS came to the rescue for me then when I came across a post by someone who had the same issue.

^^^^^ OK, guys, thanks for confirming. Guess that was indeed the problem. Now that I have the ability to bitstream, I will add a reset to the update routine.

I had a similar issue about 150 pages ago but my amp is an Onkyo 805. I think I was getting True/Master but my 805 was reading out DD/DTS. Find the Reset function on your 35's Menu and run that. I think there's a fair chance that will work.

Wow! thanks for all the replies guys. I did try a reset yesterday using the method of holding power, open and pause at the same time with no luck. Will try the reset in the menu when I get home tonight.

I too subscribe to Netflix and I recently played that blu ray disc with no problems, so I suspect you got a bad disc. I am assuming you have the latest FW? If not, then that could also be a problem. After downloading the latest firmware, try playing the disc again. If you already have the latest FW, then try another disc.

I've read through several pages, but didn't find anything about video settings (I'm sure it here somewhere).

What are the proper video settings for the BD35?

Also, I've had my player for about a year or so and have not done any FW updates. Should I update? What has changed with the newer FW?

thanks.

What do you mean by "proper video settings?" Are you talking about things like 24p playback? Video resolution? The settings described on page 29 of the owner's manual? You need to be more specific. Otherwise, all I can say is "whatever looks good to you."

What firmware do you have now? Current version is 2.0. If you are not having any problems, with playback, the simple answer is "no." But it woudn't do any harm to update to the latest version. And yes, you can just install 2.0 over whatever you have now. What do the updates fix? "BD Playability" or some such rot.
Well, it would be good to know for sure what Contrast and Brightness settings allow a complete full range (1-235) output. I ask this because with my BD-55 and FP (Epson TW500), no matter how I try, it seems that the lowest range (1-7) is always clipped (using AVSHD). I assumed it was a problem with the player, but I have a friend who owns a BD-35 and a Panasonic plasma, and using the same calibration disc he is able to get the full range out of the player without touching the Contrast and Brigthness in the player.

I'm talking about the various picture adjustments in the player. The little bit that I've looked around in the menu it looks like there are several settings that are adjustable.

I've got it outputting in 24p, and I'm pretty sure my resolution is set correctly. I was just wondering if there are any other picture settings that have been identified as "best" or "correct" to achieve the best and most accurate picture. (i.e. Brightness, Contrast, picture mode, I think I remember seeing a black level control, etc.)

I'm running it to a new Sammy plasma via HDMI.

Use this free calibration software and it will tell you what is "best" or "correct".

So, there are no definitive settings that have been established?

It seems like using a calibration disc/software, the settings of the BD player are going to be dependent on the TV settings. I guess I'll set my TV to the correct settings (or ballpark) and then fine tune a little within the BD player menu....is that what you'd recommend? I basically just want the BD player to output a very neutral or natural signal to my plasma without any unneeded alterations.

The calibration thread will tell you about device settings in combination.

I've skimmed through the calibration forum and I can't find anything about this.

Can anyone shed more light on this topic? What settings are you guys using?

i've owned my bd35 for 1.5 years or so, still have the 1.0v firmware, have never updated it since . i'm not a heavy user of this machine, probably just 1-2 sessions a week. is there alot to benefit from getting the latest 2.0v ? i can't say i've noticed any playback issues since owning the 35 . also, what is the best way to 'reset' the bd35 if i have to ? should i just do it inside the menu , or is there a better way ? thanks .....

Honestly, if you aren't having any problems you don't NEED to upgrade. Can't see how it would hurt though. Versions 1.5 - 1.7 fixed playability, general stability, and stability of HD audio decoding. All the other updates including 2.0 mainly address playback issues affecting specific titles.

I believe there's a firmware thread somewhere and I know that firmware change logs are posted on the Panasonic JP site.

Just set your 35 to the Standard picture mode setting (I forget what it is called exactly, but all player adjustments are turned off) and calibrate your tv using the calibration disc of your choice. I seriously doubt you will need to make any tweaks with the 35 settings. Besides, I may be wrong, but I believe the settings you are talking about need to be set EACH TIME you view a disc. Like setting 24p for SD DVD playback, they are not permanent.

The BD35 has only been available since mid-October 2008.

With an ethernet connection the firmware updates are easy and painless -- I see no reason to not do them.

Looks like Crank 2 is another Starship Troopers type title, just out. It also apparently needs a memory card to be in place before attempting to play it, else things get real goofy.
See my post from Tuesday for my experience with Crank 2 and the resolution to get it to load properly on our Panasonics:

Thanks for the heads up. Couldn't get it to load on my 55 but loaded on my Denon 2010 ) not connected but has an sd card). This is a serious issue with Lionsgate. I have also had trouble loading and even playing recent Lionsgate titles on my Samsung 3600 which does have internal memory and a connection. They have then always played on my 55 which has never been connected. This time it looks like things are reversed. I'm about ready to boycott Lionsgate titles until they get their act together. No problem with any other studio.

IMO what is worst then the headache of getting it to load was the fact the movie sucked. Great bass, PQ was good but the way it was filmed and the video game plot made my wife and I to turn it off after just 55 minutes. YMMV
