Thanks, i am off soon to watch Galapagos as i have not watched it in full yet and only blu ray i have. I did order Planet Earth but haven't got it yet. I'll open up the manual and put in the codes for the remote. My fhd1 plasma does not have speakers or tuner, so i will want the volume to be controlled by Pioneer 92 receiver. I'll mess with it untill i get it going and maybe channels also. The tuner is a Motorola cable box from Charter.

When I try to load the recent disc of Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" (Decca / Universal) on my new BD35, I get the error message "This disc is incompatible." Is this likely to be simply a bad copy, and I need to exchange it? Or is there some more fundamental reason why it might not work?

The similar disc of Bellini's "I Puritani" (DG / Universal) plays OK. Both discs are Metropolitan Opera productions, derived from the "Great Performances at the Met" broadcasts in theaters and on PBS.

No, it wouldn't.

An HDMI switcher allows you to connect multiple HDMI sources to it and output to one source. For example, if your display only had one HDMI input, but you had multiple HDMI sources (BD player, HD cable box, DVD player, etc.), you could hook them all up to the switcher and then have one HDMI cable going from the switcher to your display. Newer receivers with multiple HDMI inputs (and displays with multiple HDMI inputs) can eliminate/reduce the need for a switcher.

Since your receiver doesn't have HDMI, it still can't help you with lossless audio. You'll still need the 55's analogs.

The BD35 does not have the audio outputs so you'd have to hook it up via optical or coax in which case you'd receive the lossy DTS and DD and not lossless.

Can you tell the difference in sound? Some say they can and some say they can't. I haven't had mine long enough to tell yet. I have an even older Yamaha RX-V995 hooked up to my BD55 via the 5.1 channel inputs and for me I just wanted it because if I went for blu ray then I wanted the best sound. That being said, at this point I'm not sure I can tell the difference.

The BD55 is $100 more than the BD 35. Is that a lot of money? To me it wasn't. The analog setup in these older receivers isn't a piece of cake because you'll need to boost the sub output.

Hey Long,
Yea, I had a hard time trying to decide between the BD35 & BD55, and ended up with the BD35, yea I know it was only 100 bucks for the 55, but, for me, this is ok for now, I'm in the middle of finishing my theater in my basement, ran all new wires, etc, but I'm playing the waiting game for now, after 6months, maybe a year, then getting a RX-V-3900 or the new Z11, and some other up'grades....

I just ordered my BD35 yesturday !!!, and got a great deal...
I will let you know, hopefully Friday after work & see how it works, and it will be nice to hooking it up to my Samsung LN-T4669F..... What's the best break-in Blue ray, for 1st time playing???

This may sound funny, but I enjoy DD & DTS just fine, I have not spent any time with the newer audio formats, so this is new territory to me.... I'm ready for something new....

My 2095 has dual adjustments in the on screen menu, where I can control the bass factor, both in DD and DTS, I have my DTS in 5 out of 10, and it's way louder than regular level at zero....
My Sub output will be fine, I have eight 10"subs and a RSW-12 running at once.........
I'm praying for a friday delivery!!! Thanks...

Anybody?

To put the question more simply, does increasing the BD35's User pic Brightness setting to achieve blacker-than-black cause it to clip white or cause any other adverse affects?

Sidenote: With my Epson 720/Onkyo 805 combination with HDMI connections I was never able to get BTB with my PS3, HD-A35, or HD-A2. But I am able to get BTB with my Oppo 981. Strange. I've always thought that there must be some sort of EDID miscommunication.

If i have 5.1 sound, Pioneer 92 receiver(newer type receiver), Bd35 hooked with hdmi, in setup and in audio is this a good way to have the bd35 setup for my system.

BD35/55 set to PCM/Secondary audio on
This will pass full hirez codes as well as secondary audio but our receivers/processors will only show MCPCM. However, we can get full DTS-HD and TrueHD as well as secondary audio.

Using the player's controls to 'show' BTB or WTW will only squeeze the image range into a smaller area. You're not really showing BTB, you're making BTB actually whiter-than-black, etc.

I.e. to make BTB and WTW appear would cause 0..255 to be squeezed into 16..235, with loss of detail, banding, etc, and will screw up your black level and etc.

I don't know why but I just feel comfortable with this setup. The XA2 was just too slow and I am going to sell the Denon to a friend.

Anyway, I noticed in the PAnny setup that there is a setting for RBG normal and extended? If this player outs 444 why the RBG setting? Was just a question that puzzled me today.

Thanks for the help.

HDMI RGB output is not what you think. It doesn't enhance or extend the color gamut. It adjusts the contrast (black to white) range. For most displays, this should be set to standard. If you hook up your player via DVI to a computer monitor (or somthing similar to a computer monitor), then you might need to switch to "enhanced" but most consumer displays connected via HDMI perform best with this set to standard.

I had to do that to get around my power strips.

I'm using powerline networking through power strips. I think it only fails through powerstrips that include some type of line filtering (like some of the Monster Cable and other line conditioning products). But through a standard power strip with nothing more than a surge supressor, I've been able to use powerline networking without any problems.

We have tried using the sub menu bottom on the remote control and are able to switch the video options (normal, side cut and zoom) however the picture remains with the same size, 16:9 ratio. We used to be able to zoom with the Samsung model where the movie wil take the entire TV screen. Is this normal on all bluray players? Called Samsung technical support and they say is the DVD player. Any assistance is greatky appreciated.

The zoom control is not functional for Blu-ray Discs. Only for standard def (specifically non-anamorphic) DVDs which actually need the zoom function in order to fit the screen width.

Of course, the zoom function also doesn't work with *some* non-anamorphic DVDs, but that's why the Panasonic engineers in Japan now have my copy of "The Abyss" SE on DVD. I do hope I get it back!

Two questions.

1. I'm trying to watch some 4:3 movies on the BD35, but I am having some problems.

When I set the player to 16:9, the player sets some gray bars on both sides of my screen, and then it boxes up the picture with very thin black lines.

When I set it to 16:9 Full, the player expands the image to cover the screen, although not fully. And it won't let me adjust the aspect with my TV remote.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? The gray bars are somewhat distracting, and I can't help but feel that the image is being boxed up more than necessary.

2. Can you make this player region free? I own the American one, and I still have some Korean and Japanese DVDs I'd like to watch.

I'll like to apologize if the questions have been answered. I looked around this thread for a while, but did not see it. I tried making a post earlier, but I think it was moved or deleted. So if this has been addressed I apologize for taking up space.

Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

SETUP => Display => Screen Saver Function => Off.

That should get rid of the light gray bars.

The bd35 is going to be just fine and you will enjoy all of the benefits of blu ray. A lot of us spend way too much time splitting hairs with this stuff but we love it.

When it's all said and done we all watch a beutiful picture with beautiful sound. Sure beats the heck out of VHS and 8 tracks. Haha

As far as movies, I'm new to the player and have only had mine for a couple of weeks now. One of the better movies I've seen (for sound) is Ironman and the best movie I've seen for picture is Wall E which I haven't wacthed. I was in San Francisco and they had it playing on a TV inside of a music store there and the picture is incredible.

There is no need for me to get a new reciver just for video switching until there is 1080P content on TV. That's the way I see it anyway.

Have fun with your new blu ray. I ordered Indiana Jones and Transformers on Black Friday from Amazon and they should be here tomorrow so there might be a double feature this weekend.

Has anyone got there Disney Promotion movies back yet for buying the BD-35?
What promo movies. Are they MIR? Is this promo still going on? What movies do you get to chose from? Right now I am considering getting this or the Samsung 1500. I was thinking of going with the Sammy becasue it's a little cheaper, but if you get free movies with this player it might give it the edge... provided i actually care to see those movies.

NVM, I'm guessing you mean this promo. I might jsut get the 35 after all now, it does support 7.1 audio via HDMI, right?

Also is there any truth behind this? Will I have the same problemw ith my TX-SR605?

I've tested the BD-P1500 and the BD55 (and one of my writers is finishing up a review of the BD35). The Panasonic players are superior to the BD-P1500 in many ways, notably DVD upconversion, BD picture quality, and the ability to decode DTS-HD Master Audio (which *may* come in a firmware upgrade for the BD-P1500). I would spend the extra $20 or so and get the BD35 over the P1500.

The Amazon review you're linking to is from a guy with an Onkyo HTIB system with no HDMI audio support. Your 605 will work fine with the BD35 via HDMI. You can use bitstream or PCM output.

And yes, that's the 2-disc offer we were talking about - "Ratatouille" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and I confirmed that the deal is valid for online purchases even though the form says that the store receipt must emanate from the same state as the consumer's address. Who even uses the word "emanate?"

There is 1080p content on TV. Dish Network has been broadcasting 1080p since August. Of course, it's only one movie and it's VOD (so you'll have to pay for it), but it's real 1080p/24 and it looks great. Now if only they had more than one channel.

VUDU also just started offering 1080p movies for download via the vudu box (and I think they already have a couple of hundred titles), and Netflix HD goes live today in the Samsung BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 (but I don't know if Netflix does or will support 1080p).

But in terms of the major networks doing 1080p, that's probably still a long way off.

What TV do you have? Sounds like it's not sizing the 1080p image properly if you're getting black bars all the way around on 4:3 content. You should only have bars on the side unless it's a nonanamorphic widescreen title.

As sdurani mentioned, disabling the screen-saver turns the gray bars black. But you probably do not want to set the TV to 16:9 FULL as that will stretch out and distort your content (unless you have an older analog 16:9 set like the Loewe ACO9383 38-inch CRT which required this type of setting).

Simple solution? Stop watching 4:3 DVDs.

I just got a cheap 1 GB SD card for mine. You can go larger - it does support SDHC, so you could go up to the largest SDHC card available - but I'd just grab the cheap one.

That's patently ridiculous. I have a TX-SR674, and a BD35, and multichannel LPCM (up to 7.1) works just fine.

Edit: That's referring to one of their HTIB rigs; that may well not do multichannel LPCM, but their midrange receivers (and up) definitely do.
