Official Panasonic DMP-BD35/55 Owners Thread - Page 293

post #8761 of 14894
SillySally,

I mentioned a couple times that I bought the Sony 350 and the Panasonic BD 35 at the same time and did a side by side comparison and the Sony just seemed to "glow" on dark scenes from what I could tell on a 46" Sony W4100 LCD. The place that I had the most trouble (and still do to some extent) is in any dark scenes in which there is a shadow on someones face or body; it tends to be so dark you can not make out the features behind them. However I did not see this with the Sony 350 or on my set when I am watching from my HD cable source. I kept the Panasonic because I believe it does a better job on upconverting my DVD and audio. When I see that people like yourself have actually done quantitative tests it makes me wonder why I did not see the same thing as you; not questioning your data, just wondering why I did not see the same thing with the naked eye and what I am possibly overlooking.

Take care,

Joe

Listening to "Chicago/EWF at the Greek" with DTS-HD Master audio (5.1) over analogs, I get only bass guitar from the center channel, really heavy output from the surrounds (what you might get if you applied ProLogic to a 2-channel stereo input), and nothing at all from the SW. Switching over to the coax (which should be just 5.1 DD), the same thing, except the SW kicks in.

I've done the analog 5.1 speaker set up and it tested OK. I put in "Total Recall" with a DTS-HD Master track and it played as expected. I've read such glowing reviews of the "Chicago/EWF" BD, that I'm wondering if this is the way it's supposed to be or what. Can anyone confirm?

The subwoofer channel is not always used in music situations. Music mixers are often apt to put the bass in the L/R and not add any in the sub. Similarly they may put vocals in the L/R rather than use the center channel. Even film music mixers use the sub sparingly for film scores. Are you sure the bass is in the center speaker or actually in L/R and sounds like it's in the center? I have that concert on HD-DVD so can't confirm your situation.

Don't know if this is crazy, but can the disc tray be closed manually...I mean by pushing directly on the tray. I have the bd-35 & it doesn't seem to want to operate in this fashion-I'm afraid to put too much pressure on it.

I just watched the new Criterion Blu-ray release of Chungking Express on my "35". My gaaawd, I have never experienced a load time so long as this disc. It doesn't even have BD Live, so I can't understand why it took so long. Anybody else have this experience?

Panasonic announced three new players at CES this week. The 35/55 will set records for shortest lifespan.

moovtune, I put my ear right up to the center speaker and all I heard was the bass guitar, at a rather low level. No vocals, no other instrumentation, or audience sounds. The sound from the L/R speakers is great; the overall mix just seems strange to me. I don't have any other concerts on BR to compare, only the Eagles Farewell Tour on HD-DVD (DTS 5.1 via optical to the V2600) which sounds great with most vocals coming through the center and sounding overall more balanced (with regards to the surrounds especially).

Maybe it's just the way it is. As I said, "Total Recall" plays fine, so I know my connections & settings are OK. Thanks.

I have shut mine like that a few times (was in the habit from my dvd player) and it does take a little more force then most but it can be shut like that. From the few times I have done it it doesn't seem to have messed anything up...not sure if it's good on it or not but it does close.

By the way on the free two blu-ray movies what titles have people been getting? Is it just only Ratatouille and Nightmare Before Christmas?

Thanks

Duh! Thank you! Not great movies, but free is free. I remember when you'd get a load of movies for buying an HD-DVD player -- those movies were usually not ones I'd care to own, but here you get less movies and they're no better. Oh well -- again, free is free.

For as long as they carry that player, you can come in and get price adjustments. I did this tons of times as the HD-DVD players' prices plummeted. Of course, if they stop carrying the player, your option is to return it and buy a different one instead.

The only thing I have always wondered about it returning a player after you have removed the UPC in order to send in a rebate for movies, etc. I would think that Costco would return it regardless, but before I send this rebate in I will need to check with someone at the store about this kind of situation.

DivX=No
AVCHD=Yes but it must be authored on a DVDR,the SD card will only play files from a camcorder.Neither will play raw files.
MP3=Only CD-R.
JPEG=CD-R or SD.

Well Joe, I think what you are seeing is black crush. That's why when I set up any video source, I will do a full ISF calibration for the source and for my display. You can turn up the brightness but then you will loose detail. Its probably in your display and its limitations.

Good luck.

You clearly have never tried a pio 51/05. That one is slow.

Hey how about the panny BD-55, that was quick. It's stating to look like Panasonic is coming out with new BD players quicker that Pioneer is coming out with firmware to fix there BD-51/05. I am still waiting for promised firmware on my BD-51 that I have had for over 6 months.

That's surprising for Pioneer. BTW - SillySally, I enjoy your contributions to the Kuro & 141 threads.

Yes guzie, I have had this happen about 3 times to me and it is weird. Why the small hairline cracks? I don't remember DVD being this fragile and could at least take a scratch or two.

If Bluray is this easy to break and cost over $20, then this will eventually kill the format, just like mp3 killed the CD even though the latter has better sound quality.

Anyone else experience this? I hope the players are not the reason for this. I of course have the Panny BD35

From what I've been reading it has to do with the authoring of the discs. I know that the Java based discs take awhile on my BD30 and BD35 players. Might as well also bitch and moan about stopping and restarting a disc from the previous scene!

So I picked up a BD55 during the holidays and still haven't had a chance to open the box. I know, it's hard to believe and yes it's killing me to try the latest edition to the family (My advice, get a flu shot). Anyhow, right out of the box is there anything I should know or anything I have to update? I'm going to spend a while this evening reading over this thread but was hoping for a little "heads up."

Thanks!

My BD-55 just stopped playing discs (many tried) and displays message "this operation is currently disabled". I have unplugged it and retried several times with no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

You waited this long to hook it up?!

Here are a few tips:
1.After the player sets itself to the Easy Settings go to Setup>Display and hit the Status button on the remote,if it says 1.5 or less then update to FW 1.6.
2.In Setup go to TV/Device:If you are using component cables then set the appropriate output for your tv(1080i is recommended).If you are using HDMI then turn off Auto and set it to the appropriate setting for your tv.
3.In Setup go to Audio:If you are only using a tv or a 2ch receiver then set everything to stereo PCM,also turn off Secondary Audio.
If you are using an HDMI AVR then set everything to Bitstream,also turn off Secondary Audio.You might have to disable HDMI Audio depending on your AVR.
If you are using the analog outputs then you can leave the default settings.

How about an avchd authored onto a DVD+R DL using blu ray file system and UDF 2.0. Or just a DVDR not Dual Layer. Thanks.

I haven't tried a DL but the DVDR can be BDMV,you must burn UDF 2.5.
ImgBurn works great for burning.

Hey Folks-

I asked this a while back and got a couple responses, looking for more. I get most of my DVDs from Netflix. Have people had problems with standard def (or Blu) dvds? Lockups, freezing, etc...?

I had terrible issues with my HD DVD player so I'm kind of paranoid. I don't want to go through that again...

Please share your experience thanks!

Moviegeek,

Thanks for your reply. The BD55 has been sitting in the corner waiting for it's debut (along with myself, lol). As I mentioned 2009 began with a nasty case of the flu so it's been killing me (to say the least) to finally see the 55 in action. I appreciate your input.

I've searched this thread and the rest of the forum, but couldn't find an answer to my question. Every DVD player I've ever owned has an "A" -"B" repeat function, where you can set the player to repeat a section of the dvd or a chapter, but I can't find it for the BD 35. Is there a hidden menu that would allow me to do this?

ive got my player connected to my receiver through an optical cable. can someone tell me what settings on the player i have to use to get the best sound? some movies seem to lack a bit of "oomph". the pineapple express final shootout and explosions werent as big and loud as i was expecting. also i was watching crank today and the DD Ex sounded better than the PCM.

Set the digital outs to bitstream. PCM will be stereo over optical.

While these kinds of posts may not technically violate the "no price talk" rule, they don't have anything to do with the players themselves. Please consider that for your future posts.

I did it right. The only problem was that I was using Vista to burn the CD vs. XP or third party software. If you are trying to manually update firmware Panasonic tech support told me that the 35/55 will not read disks burned using Vista's CD writing software. I used my other computer with XP and my 35 read and installed the firmware without a hitch.
