Dave Mack -- At least they aren't charging MSRP (= $3499). They are closer to the MAP, which we are not supposed to post here. But it's still too high a price (given the online prices of it's competition , like the PT-AE3000).

If I can't negotiate a lower price, I may either just go with the HC5500, the AE3000, or wait until Mitsubishi decides to drop it's online sales restriction (in that order). My current 720p PJ can't do justice to my new BD player and BD discs, so I'm getting impatient.


Art uses a 128" Firehawk in his personal HT room, and had no problem using it (http://www.projectorreviews.com/mits...nce.php#screen). He prefers a bright picture too. He did say that he zoomed the picture to a smaller size for watching sports programs over TV (which he likes really bright with some ambient light. Read his entire review for all the details.

I've been looking for a replacement for my HD1000 as well. From reading Art's review (that CT_Wiebe linked to), it hit 663 lumens with calibration. I would guess this is close enough to the HD1000 for it to work as a good replacement. The high lamp setting on the 6500 would at least match the HD1000 in low lamp.

Keep in mind though, those lumen measurements are almost always done with the zoom at it's widest aperature (with the projector as close to the screen as possible). If you mount the projector at the other extreme (as far away from the screen as possible), then you will see significantly less light output. Art didn't measure this, so we don't know the exact number, but it will likely be quite a bit less.

The 6500 only has a 1.6x zoom, so it won't be as much of a loss as the projectors with 2x zoom, nevertheless if you want to get close to the HD1000, you'll definitely want to mount the 6500 as close as possible to the screen.

Also, where do you find those red, green, blue options listed under Brightness and Contrast? I can't find that anywhere in the menus.

I did not notice any smell or odor like something was burning. For what it's worth I did notice a faint smell coming from the vents after more than a few hours of use. It's hard to describe the smell. The best way I can describe it is that is smells like the small emissions from the bulb breaking in, which I would think is common. But it has never smelled like something burning.

I just realized that tax on this PJ would be over $200. eesh. Another reason to wait for a different model or if this gets released to internet vendors.

Any word on this projector with motion lag?

For calibration, you have to turn the auto-iris off - otherwise you can't get a good calibration. Once you finish the calibration, you turn the auto-iris back on.

Those settings are under IMAGE => COLOR TEMP. => USER => REFERENCE. It's on about page 25 of your manual (at least that's where it is in the HC5500's manual) - in the "Menu Operation" table.

BB has it listed online at MSRP. Does Magnolia within BB negotiate or is it only sold at the listed price?

I have to make a store run tomorrow, near my local BB, I guess I'll stop in and check. From what I've heard, they are still selling them for way too much money, compared to their direct competition.

For those that purchased or are planning on purchasing an HC6500. I'm curious, with the current discounts on the HC5500 and what appears to be no discount on the HC6500 ($1500 difference), what pushed you into purchasing the more expensive HC6500? I'm not judging by any means but just trying to make an informed decision for myself and it would help to understand the thought processes others similarly went through.

The HC5500 would cause me to rethink my setup due to having to move the projector 36" closer to the screen. The HC6500 would only need to be move about 12" closer. That's a difference between having the projector just behind vs. being in front of me.

I'm asking a similar question in the HC5500 thread to see why they went that direction.

I was already set to get the HC5500 but with my room layout, the Projector going to a 100" Screen would not work for me. I did not want the projector 2 feet in front of my sitting arrangement. Also I bought mine from a installer buddy for not much more than the HC5500. I couldn't be happier. The PQ on the HC6500 is truly amazing.

That's great you did not get hit with the cost difference. I'm having a similar issue with setup but just not sure how much more I want to pay to cover that one issue.

What about the warranty...how does that work? I already own the 6500, my installer friend handled the warranty registration...I didn't even see a warranty card in the box!

Mitsubishi wraps the warranty information on the outside of the box, similar to a packing slip. You should have received a white envelope with everything in side of it for warranty registration. I will provide the receipt from the dealer as well.

Anyone have any mount suggestions? I bought a wall mount from "mout direct" for my hc3000 that I never used and don't know if it would work.

Sweet deal Dave...You will not be disappointed! As far as a ceiling mount, I ended up getting a Chief RPAU I think that's the model...it's not cheap but it worked perfect. Looking forward to your review. I really love this projector!

thanks, jwv. i would love to use the wallmount if I can as I rent and am wary to make holes in the ceiling. We have a hc3000 that is on a shelf in a cabinet projecting upwards but our baby is now a toddler and she keeps wanting to walk over and look into the light, (would NOT be good, I'm sure) so now I am looking to aim it from above. The lens shift is one of the selling points as I could shelf mount it.
Can't wait to see this puppy. I always love Mits and they have never let me down.

I finally I got my very 1st projector....the HC6500.....it's been a long time coming....now I'm inspired again to continue redesigning my basement dedicated theater....time to bring out the paint brush and rollers....and finally mount those movie posters that have been collecting dust and cobwebs all these years...hehe
I don't have a screen yet....just projecting on a wall right now, but the picture is still sweet!!!
Anybody got any suggestions on whether a white screen or gray screen is better for this projector? The dealer recommended that unless I'm planning on a Stewart Gray screen (which i can't afford), he said to go with a White screen for brightness instead....
I did notice some lamp smell for few hours.... i used to DJ....it's the same smell from all my lighting equipment (and they are all still working)....maybe its just the new lamp breaking in......
I used the old AVIA calibration disc....I bought the HD by JKP but it's too complicated to use....gotta spend some more time figuring out that bluray calibration disc.
BTW i got's mine for less than $2300 + free mount....free shipping....bought it last Tuesday afternoon...it arrived Thursday afternoon....pretty good deal!!!

I have an optoma graywolf screen that I like for the better blacks. Also in a white room like I have it helps reduce ambient light spillage.

I went with a white screen with 1.1 gain (Elite 100" fixed)...this was recommended from a installer buddy and a few others for price and performance. Blacks are very solid with this projector/screen combo. Bottom bars are really black...no gray bars here. Also colors really seem to pop with a white screen. So far I am really happy with this combo. Good luck!
