What are you hoping for at CES?

I'll be in the market for at least one new TV next year. A small one for the bedroom - maybe 50" but also a large one if the technology is ready.

I'll be hoping Pioneer and Panasonic are showing off the next gen plasmas.

Things I'd want over the current Kuro 9G
1 LARGER SCREEN - hopefully an 80" model that is below $10K (for the living room - no, I don't have the space for a projector in my apartment).
2 Quieter - I don't want to hear any buzz
3 Faster Motion - I don't want any jittery movement
4 More vivid colors
5 Brighter/Whiter (with black blacks still - not just cranked up)
6 Thinner, lighter

This is by no means a complaint about the current 9Gs - I'm just stating what areas I'd like to see an improvement over the current tech - there will always be something better every year but since I can wait, I'll wait to see what next year brings.

I'll definitely be trying to compare the plasmas to the new laser and 240hz LCDs.

I am looking for:

1. Affordable larger screen sizes (example 65" under $3k).
2. Infinite Contrast
3. Razor thin displays
4. Wireless, wireless, wireless
5. More tru2way

Sub $2000 Street Price for a 50" HDTV with comparable performance/PQ to the current Pioneer PDP-5020FD Kuro.

5 lumen tech panels at affordable prices (3K or under)

LCD panels with really good motion resolution (240Hz?)

SED.

I could also buy a non priming plasma as my secondary display.

KLee, is this the year we actually see the new panels - I know they've been talking about a new manufacturing process with fewer defects, lower costs, lower weight, better power consumption for a while but wasn't sure if it was on schedule.

Sharpbandaid, I saw SED years ago at CES when it was supposed to be released soon - looked great, I'll admit I hoped it would have progressed beyond the legal issues long ago. If they do revive it as they keep saying they will, chances are it will be another 5 years before we see one of a size that is worth getting (unless of course you need a display for your bathroom or kitchen). Of course all the promised lower costs of SED won't be realized either since it will be in smaller production than other technologies. Chances are LCD, Laser and Plasma or even OLED will be so good by then SED will have nothing to offer over the others - just my opinion of course.

Who knows if the legal battle hadn't occurred I'd be looking at a 65" SED this year at CES and getting an SED for the bedroom and waiting til the following year for an 80" in the living room but thanks to a major screw up I'll probably never own an SED. I realize your comment was tongue in cheek but I needed to vent as I had such high hopes for SED.

I'm not familiar with a non priming plasma.

Wireless HDMI.

I would like wireless HDMI as well. But considering the issues with standard wired HDMI I'm not convinced they are ready to release wireless HDMI.

Perhaps when they release HDMI 2.0 we'll see an end to lipsync, loose connections, jitter etc.

+1 for 5 lumen tech --> Panasonic neo PDPs and Pioneer 10gs. I am dying to know more about those.
Also, I would like to see a large OLED 32"+ from sony or samsung

I hope to see the following:

Less Mum and Dad store owners asking me for price lists.
Less of my samples being stolen
More bathroom facilties
Cheaper food
The porn show to start 1 day earlier so I can attend :P
post #11 of 69
Hot booth babes
5 Lumen tech and zero luminance(or very close to it) displays from in Pioneer, Panasonic, and Hitachi. I'm alson hoping to see what advancements Samsung has made in the plasma as well. And hopefully the 65" models will have and MSRP of $5500 or less.

Anyone at CES going to be looking for a screen larger than 70"? Not as in a $150,000 one but something they want to put in their non bill gates owned home?

I'm always looking for one but cost is typically an issue (not to mention there's very few PDPs above 60".

At the Pioneer demo last year, they had a survey form to fill out what it was you were looking for in your next plasma with a bunch of check marks for darker darks and things like that. I HATE questionaires that only ask questions that they already are working on - e.g. MS survey while beta testing VISTA - are transparent borders important to you you - yes, no - no place in the survey to tell them that Vista is SLOW.

So I manually wrote at the top and bottom of the survey - BIGGER THAN 70"

LOL. A true veteran of the trade show.

More OLED from more companies so we know that it is not just the flash in the pan.

Practical LED backlit LCD with enough local dimming zones to make LED BL worthwhile. Also an end to white light LED backlights, more RGB with color control.

The new 5 lumen panels for plasma, with a tested and confirmed 5 lumen output.

Very few FPD's period above 60", not just PDP. I have personally never seen a FPD above 65" for sale anywhere (I think). Still not much of a market for them at the current prices.

I love all of the posts and I know we'll see much of what was listed above. Personally, I am hoping to see Cell processors integrated into BD players and especially into flat panel HDTVs.

In a joint venture, Toshiba, Sony and IBM's advance research labs have developed a new video Cell processor processor that is even more powerful than ever expected. I understand it is more powerful than a 12 core processor. I believe Sony dropped out of the development, but may incorporate this powerful video processor in future products.

So at CES it's up to Toshiba to show us what they have up their sleeves. The advantages would be superior up-conversion of cable, Verizon, Dish and or DIRECTV as well as SD DVD and even some advantages for BD playback and IPTV. I also expect to see instant channel changing with HD content and faster program guide display.

I'm getting into CES a day early and attending some press conferences so I should be reporting on AVS Forum my findings before the show opens.

I would like to see SED, Laser HDTV (of course that will be in the mitsubishi booth, unless anyone else knows of any other manufacturers who are now doing laser?) Wireless HDMI, 10G Kuro, A wider size range of LEDs, booth babes, more info on the fabled Sharp LED, and maybe even some cool 802.11 connectivity.
^^ Here's my predictions.

No SED

Laser HDTV, like you said at the Mits booth

Yes to Wireless HDMI, Samsung and others

10 G Kuro, maybe, but likely in a private hotel for Elite dealers only

Yes to more and larger LCD w/back lit LED

Yes to more booth babes

Yes to Sharp's very thin LCD/LED, they showed two sizes at CEDIA

Yes to 802.11

Are you referring to the sets that require the 3D glasses?

I know my set has the 3-D capability which require a special set of glasses.
I have not personaly used it yet, but I have read somewhere that it is simply amazing and worth the purchase.

Part of the 'feature' comment taken from the Samsung website on the PN50A450

'The world’s first 3D-ready series of plasma TVs are here. Groundbreaking 3D technology gives you the benefits of both a flat-panel set and 3D movie viewing and gaming. Enjoy the superb picture quality of a flat panel TV with enhanced, earth-shattering 3D features. Get the ultimate gaming experience, with this SAMSUNG Plasma HDTV. '

65-70", reasonably priced low-luminescence plasma (@ Kuro 9g or better levels). I've been waiting for years (riding out my old SXRD) and this is the first year that this actually seems like a reasonable expectation.

At CEDIA, I was invited to a special demonstration by JVC in a large theater. They showed a 4K projector, the new HD20 and a new 3-D front projector that used the two colored lens glasses. More 3-D displays are expected at CES.

JVC's chief engineer did a private demonstration for me with material shot with a prototype 4K professional video camera. Nothing short of amazing. Just when I thought we were nearing the end of video science these great companies keep pushing the envelop.

Robert,

Out of curiosity, how close were the black levels on the HD20 when compared to a 9G (or even 8G) Kuro?
