Is there ANY way of getting HD audio from a PS3 to a Pass-Through Receiver?

I don't have any Blu-ray player, but I was hoping to get one soon, preferably a PS3. However my receiver presents a problem that might make me steer a different direction.

I have the Onkyo HT-S5100 HITB. It's a pass-through receiver so from what I understand, it won't play audio sent to it via HDMI. It does however have 7.1 analog inputs, but the PS3 does not have 7.1 analog outputs. Is there ANY way around this?

If there is no way at all, I have a followup question: should I still get the PS3 or find another player that supports 7.1 analog output? I could still use an optical cable with the PS3 and end up with non-HD audio, but is the difference in quality that great? I think it might cost relatively the same either way (500 for PS3 MGS4 Bundle / 400+ for possibly Sony BDP-S550 and the needed cables), however with the PS3 I obviously get the benefit of it playing games. If the audio difference is that amazing then recommendations of another player would be appreciated. Thanks!

PS3 outputs
TV outputs

You need a reciever that can handle audio through HDMI if you want HD audio with the PS3. No other way around it. When using optical with the PS3 you can set it to bitstream normal 5.1 audio like dolby. If you set it to LPCM using optical you will only get 2 channel audio.

I was in the same situation as you a year ago and ended up upgraded to a 705 which to me was well worth it. However, in your case you'd have to upgrade your reciever and get a player which would me you'd be buying 2 items instead of 1. I'd look into the panny bd50 as well as the sony you have listed.

Is HD audio really worth? To me yes. After all if your going bluray HD audio is pretty much about 50% of the benefit of going bluray.

I see the situation as whether or not HD audio is worth around two times, or more, what you want to spend.

Only you can really answer that but, overall, considering gaming seems somewhat important to you, the PS3 seems like a better way to go. You can watch Blue Ray discs and game for now, then contemplate whether or not you want to upgrade your receiver for HD audio.

Whereas, if you buy the Blue Ray player, you get HD audio but maybe or maybe not a nice improvement with your system. In that route, regardless of HD audio, you still have to buy the PS3 if you want to game.

Any adapter would need to separate the video from the audio and then convert the HDMI's digital signal to multi-channel analog audio.

I don't know if one exists that does both.

He knows, we all know, but do you know that it is actually Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), and not BluRay. While we are at this did you know that it is neither necessary nor useful to use multiple exclamation points. It is wrong, wrong, wrong he exclaimed!

Excuse the fun out of me. I guess the Blue Ray police or spelling Nazis are out in force..

BTW, any useful suggestions for the OP?

Oh well, the main reason I wanted it was because it's been hailed as the best blu-ray player. The gaming thing was really just an added bonus. I already have a 360, so I'm really only missing out on PS3 exclusives, of which there's not too many I was interested in anyway. The Sony standalone I listed and the Panisonic DMP-BD55 look to be getting reviews that put them up there with the PS3, so now I just gotta decide on which one of those. The comparison thread in the Blu-ray Players section seems to be leaning to the Panny.

That is nice to know. I'm waiting in the wings for lower prices on players with 5.1 or 7.1 analog outs to use with my Anthem AVM 20 that has no HDMI capability (at least without expensive upgrade..that afaik, doesn't do the audio side anyway).

And, if it's Panny, the HDMI video part should work good with my Panny plasma TV.
