You would "pass through" the HDMI through a reciever and the receiver would pass it through to the display. The audio is "peeled off" at the reciever and the display gets the video details. Regarding the resolution... does it matter if you don't own it? It's like asking if a Ferrari or a Lambo handles better and why you would want one over the other... doesn't really matter now does it?

At the risk of asking a dumb question.... HDMI 1.3 supports 2560x1600. If you had a 1.3 compliant video card, a 1.3 capable receiver, and a HDMI -> DVI-D adapter on the output side of the receiver, would that not work?

You could purchase a Dell 3008WFP which has Display Port input and buy the speaker attachments that are made specifically for the Ultrasharp Dell monitors. Then purchase a graphics card with display port which passes audio and that would be a good solution.
