Receiver/TV hook-up Need Advice

Thread Starter
I have a new Sammy HL-67A750 DLP television that has an optical Audio output. I have an hr22 dvr connected by hdmi, a D* Tivo dvr connected by component cables and will connect a blu-ray via hdmi.

My question is can I feed the optical audio out from the TV into an older Sony 5.1 receiver (no HDMI or component inputs; but has an optical in) instead of having to connect each output device (hr22, tivo, blu-ray) to the receiver and then have the receiver drive the 5.1 speakers. I am unclear as to what type of signal the 67a750 sends from the optical audio output so will the receiver still be able to decode the various signals it was designed to decode? I know it won't decode some of the newer codecs, but I think that's ok if it plays audio tracks even though it may not be the sophisticated sound originally planned/recorded in the source material.

I presume the video is going direct into the TV and what ever device is selected by the TV will have the audio signal sent to the receiver to be broadcasted by the speakers. I am assuming this would eliminate any receiver switching between input devices since audio would be selected by the TV?

Will this work? I'm a newbie at this stuff and I know many of you experts can give me some help. Thanks in advance.

The TV will only output 2 channel stereo to your receiver, which should be able to matrix the 2 channels to 5.1 via DPL, DTS Neo, etc...not the best way to go.

The only DD 5.1 that could be sent from your TV's optical output would be from the TV's internal digital tuner.
