Q's about the PS3's DTSMA/TrueHD decoding

Ok, as I understand it, the PS3 can decode TrueHD and DTSMA via software decoding, so is there anyway to play DTSMA and/or TrueHD with my older receiver over optical as it has no HDMI inputs? If not, would I just need a receiver with HDMI inputs that can do HDMI switching (these are cheaper) or would I still need a receiver that has HDMI repeating? i'm assuming I would still need a receiver that does HDMI repeating?

You need a receiver that accepts LPCM over hdmi. That is the only way to get truehd and master audio with the ps3.

well any receiver that accepts audio via HDMI should accept LPCM, but i'm pretty sure receivers with HDMI switching don't accept the audio through HDMI, it does what it sounds like it does, it acts as a switcher. i guess i need a receiver with HDMI repeating then.

for someone who doesn't consider himself a big audiophile, is lossless audio worth it? is there a noticeable difference over DD/DTS? my older Yamaha receiver is kind of flakey and i just got a $175 giftcard for a local electronics store, so i was originally planning on just getting a Harman Kardon AVR-146 (which is just a basic 5.1 receiver with HDMI switching), but then theres an Onkyo TX576 7.1 with HDMI repeating (but no DTSMA/TrueHD decoding, but i wouldn't need it with the PS3) for only 80-100 more. but then again, i think i like harman kardon more than onkyo.

I'm no audiophile either, but I can definitly tell the difference between a lossless soundtrack and a standard DD or DTS track, the lossless tracks just have more life to them, I bet you'd like it if you tried it!

rahzel, you can always do a stereo comparison of the different codecs on your receiver as you can get 2 channel lossless on any receiver. Just push select to see which codecs are being used then push press triangle and go to the audio options to cycle through the different choices per movie.

You need at least the Onkyo TX-SR6xx to get HDMI switching with HDMI audio input. Cheaper models I saw (although this was the better part of a year ago now) came from Sony and someone else who I can't remember now. The Sony was by far the cheapest and had either one or two more HDMI inputs. I'm happy with my Onkyo, however.

Personally, I find the improvement worth it, although if I were still using the teensy satellites I used to use, I proably wouldn't have noticed the difference.

Way worth it to me. I notice a nice diffrence, I like my setup but it is on the lower end. My receiver only has one hdmi input so I am using the 4x1monoprice switcher. And I use all 4 inputs. If you are buying something new now definatly make sure you get an hdmi reciever its a total no brainer, particularily if you have ps3.

The Onkyo TXSR576 has HDMI 1.2 repeating but not DTS-MA/TrueHD decoding, but this is not needed with the PS3 so it should work. However, I have my eyes on the Pioneer VSX 1018. Most people seem to put this in the same class as the Onkyo 606 and the Yamaha 663. But since I have a giftcard at a specific store and they only carry Onkyo, HK, Sony and Pioneer, and the Pio is cheaper than the Onkyo, I'm gonna go with the Pioneer if anything. My other choice is to cheap out and go with a basic 6ch HK AVR-146 and save myself $200. But I figure I should spend the extra money as I will be using this AVR until it dies.
