Don't blame the folks at Red Box. The 28-day moratorium wasn't their idea!

True, it wasn't their idea, but they could get around it. Family Video will have it on release day (DVD, Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray). Blockbuster may also have it.

No, Red Box can't "get around it." They've got a contract with Warner Bros. (and other studios) that prevents them from "getting around it."

I finally got Iron Man 3 from Redbox... They had it listed for a while now but there wasn't a place within 15 miles of my house that had it. I guess I could have went and got it from one of the places that had it and returned it to my local Redbox.

They chose to sign that contract.

They obviously decided it was in their best interest to sign the contract and end the lawsuits, but it says right in that article they previously "got around" delays by buying direct from wholesalers and then retailers.

Ultimately, some of the studios were able to persuade wholesalers to stop selling movies to Redbox. The DVD-rental outlet got around that limitation by sending staffers out to Target, Walmart, and other retailers armed with corporate credit cards. The staffers would snap up new releases to be loaded into the ubiquitous kiosks.

Blockbuster was doing the same thing at one time for some releases.

Well, you could try Netflix.

Blockbuster doesn't have those delay windows so yes that's a big positive as far as their service

But due to the higher costs without those delays their inventory has declined. Netflix and Redbox both agreed to the 28 day terms in return for a more competitive bulk wholesale rate.

looks like Man of Steel coming out next month is also distributed by Warner Bros. and will have the 28 day delay rolleyes.gif ...same goes for Hangover: Part 3 which came out last week and Pacific Rim...oh well can't complain when I can rent the Blu-ray's for .33 cents from Redbox when they do have it available biggrin.gif

that being said the 28 day wait has got me to go to Best Buy today and purchase Pacific Rim instead of waiting so the studios have won this round
post #194 of 239
'Man of Steel' is worth the purchase price! It was my favorite movie of the year for months (then 'Captain Phillips' and 'Gravity' came along and pushed 'Man of Steel' to third place for me).

I wonder how many people rent the Blu-rays at Red Box, rip them, and burn their own copies?

The 28 day delays are slightly inconvenient, but silly of the studios IMHO...The release date of a movie to me is the day it is available on Netflix or at Redbox. Aside from 3D of course which I purchase but even if I buy a movie I tend to only watch it 1 additional time to the theatre so it's just a waste to buy VS rent it for a 2nd viewing for me.

Minor Gripe .. updated RB website has apparently done away with hover over movie on main menu and instant synopsis appears .. now you get a click menu that requires going to the disk page in order to get a synopsis ..

I like the new layout better...I don't want the synopsis info cluttering up the screen when hovering over a movie...plus I pretty much already know which movies I want so I never bother reading the descriptions anyway

the 28 day delay windows is finally over for Pacific Rim this coming Tuesday...I've noticed more and more stocking issues for new releases recently...first with Iron Man 3 and more recently with the new Pixar movie, Monsters University...wasn't widely available for 4-5 days after release

Man of Steel is also coming out this Tuesday but unfortunately will also be delayed due it being a Warner Bros. title...either way I planned on buying that movie so it doesn't matter as much

yup, I saw that...thanks...I actually still use the earlier codes you posted in that thread as most of them still seem to work as long as you use a different credit card...can't beat .30 cent Blu-ray rentals!...I think I only paid $2.50 for my first Redbox rental, everything else has been .30 cents biggrin.gif

yay no availability issues with Pacific Rim...it's widely available with no stocking issues

Anyone knows if the Reb Box Blu-ray copy of Red 2 is crippled? I am thinking of renting, but do not want to bother if the audio is crippled like it was on Red.

Red had two retail versions: a basic one with lossy audio and a special edition version that had lossless.

Someone just left a comment that it had lossy audio.

Confirm RED 2 from REDBOX features only DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 -- came here to post exactly that, and my reaction: will not purchase this title in protest over their rental offering. It came as an unpleasant shock while nestling up to some highly anticipated holiday viewing, but since I had just watched THE CONJURING (with excellent audio), and had only this other one, I confess I did watch it anyway. Would have purchased, but that is my consumer's stand...
